Beit known that I, SIMON HOFFMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lImprovement in Boilers with Fire-TubevSuperheaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to superheaters for steam boilers of the tire tube type,.and has for its object to simplify and c lieapen the construction of the superheater, to reduce the space' requiredin the smoke box for the application of the superheater, and to make the means-by which the superheater tubes are connected respectively with the steam supply of the boiler and with. the engine cylinders simpler, cheaper, and easier to maintain.
More particularly my invention relates to the construction of the headers, as they are called, 'or collecting chambers usually interposed in the path of the steam at the two ends of the System of superheater tubes.
In superheaters of the type referred to thel general practice has been to place in the Smoke box a header casting, having one chamber connected with the wet Steam supply and with one end of the superheater tubes, and a second 'chamber connected with 4the other end of the superheater tubes and with the engine cylinders, the first chamber Serving to distribute wet steam to the superheater tubes, and the second chamber serving to collect the superheated steam and distribute the same to the cyl inders. vThere are, in some constructions, two distinct castings, one being used for each header chamber, while in other constructions a single casting, having two chambers as above,-has been employed. The use of these headers by reason of their neeessary very considerable weight and size, as also by reason of the complicated coring required in their manufacture, as well as by reason of the considerable machining which has been necessary, has made them eXpensive both as to cost of manufactureand as to cost oinstallation.
,In my invention described herein, l have avoided the above statedidisadvantagcs by substituting` for these hitherto used cast headers, a header which forms an integral Specication of Letters Iatent. Application led January 12, 1912. ASerial No.

The superheater elements Z are arranged in the fire tubes m in the usual manner and have their ends bent upwardly toward the header wall d. The superheated steam ends not each element, open directly through this wall into the lower header y' while the saturated Steam ends 0 open into steam thimbles p which pass through the header y' so as to open into the upper header h. As indicatedlin the drawings the ends 'n and 0 of a single element are arranged side by side and fixed in position by a clamp g and a single nut boltsystem 7' but this, while a preferred mode of connection, is not an essential one in the practice of my present invention. Similarly the particular arrangement of the fire tubes vand superheater elements with reference to one an.
other and of the superheater elements with reference to the tire tubes is notl essential, though preferred, and any desired rarrangement of tire tubes and superheater elements whether taken alone or with reference to one another may be employed within the spirit of my invention. The particular'method of connecting the ends of the superheater elements to the headers is also not essential to my invention. Stays s of conventional type may be suitably placed to strengthen the construction. Petcocks t at the lowest point of the saturated steam header on each side of the boiler serve to drain olf any water of condensation which may collect.
In the modication set forth in Figs. 3 and 4. the front tube sheet a, instead ofbeing oifset forwardly in its upper part, is
given its usual flat form, and the t-wo header chambers and y' are constituted by circular segments u and u2 of boiler iron spaced' respectively forwardly andto the rear of the upper part of the tube sheet and provided with tianged portions above and below for attachment tothe boiler shell and to the tube sheet; as shown the upper flange of segment u engages the inner surface of the tube .sheet flange. Openings z" and 7c are connection and for the superheater steam Y connections respectively. The ends 'n' and o of the superheater elements are bent backwardly in the arrangement shown, so as to enter the headers from the front instead of from below as in Figs. 1 and 2 but this is a V mere matter of convenience dependent principally upon the dimensions chosen foi-'the segment u', and itsanges.
The construction shown in Figs 5 and 6 is much the sante as that of' Figs. 1 and 2 except thatY the segment constituting the partition wall g and the portion d of the tube sheet of the latter figures are exchanged so that a `portion g of the tube sheet itself separates the two chambers 'L 'and j.
Figs. 7 and 8 showa constructionin which no part of the boiler shell is used as a header wall. The superheated steam header j is formed exactly as in Figs. 3 and 4, the tube sheet separating the two headers, but the segment us (corresponding to u2 of- Fig. 4) is flanged toward the tube sheet at some distance below the boiler shell. A pipe 'v inside the boiler leads from the outer opening 2 (the latter to be joined to the steam dome of the boiler) to an opening 3 into the superlieated steam header L. The ends n', o of the superheater elements are bent backwardly as in Figs. 3 and 4.
Figs. 9 and 10 show amodied form of my invention in which the two headers L and j confprise similar tianges or flattened rings w and fw extending across the upper outer face of the front tube sheet a, said rings being separatedby a plate a' constituting a wall common to the two headers. A second plate fr constitutes the remaining wall of the outer header fw and the fronttube sheet a the remaining wall of the inner header la. The rings w, fw and plates are` preferably welded together and to the' the tube sheet with the segmentsnecessary K to constitute the header walls may, preferably, be built up outside and put into the boiler as a completed whole leaving nothing to be done except the placing of the variousi ends one of which connects with a header while the other passes lthrough said header into the remaining headers, and steam connections between the headersand the steam supply and engine cylinders respectively.
2. In a steam boiler provided with tire tubes, a superheater comprising a pair of headers part ofthe front tube sheet being employed as a wall common to the two headers, superheater elements held within some 'of the fire tubes and having their ends connected with the two headers, and steam connections between the headers and the steam supply and engine cylinders respectively.
3. In a steam boiler provided with fire tubes, a superheater comprising a pair of headers one on each side of the front tube sheet, part of which tubesheet'constitutes a partition wall common to both headers, superheater elements held within some of the fire tubes and having their ends connected with the two headers, and steam connections bet-Ween the headers and the steam supply and engine cylinders respectively.
4. In a steam boiler provided with fire tubes, a superheater comprising apair of headers one on each side of the fronttube sheet part of which tubeA sheet constitutes a partition wall common to both headers, superheater elements held within some of the lire tubeseach of said elements having a pair of ends one of which connects with a header while the other has connecting means passing through said headerinto the remaining header, and steam connections between the headers and the steam supply and engine cylinders respectively.
5. In a steam boiler rovided with fire tubes, in combination w1th the front tube sheet, segments joined to'said tube sheet so as to constitute, with a portion of the same, wall surfaces of two header chambers, superheater elements held within some of the re tubes and having their ends connected with the two headers, and steam connections between the headers and thewsteam supply and engine cylindersV respectively.
