To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEIER, a a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Head ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in headers, and more particularly to a header designed for use as a part of a superheater or preheater for steam boilers, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of header which can be made of sheet steel or other similar material, and which dispenses with the necessity for bolts and rivets to hold the parts together.
A further object is to improve upon the construction illustrated in my I application for patent filed March 29, 1915, and given Serial No. 17,767.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of. construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is abroken view in longitudinal section illustrating my improved header. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view on a reduced scale similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modification. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 illustrating a modification in which a plurality of tubes are supported in alinement in a single head, and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 6 illustrating another modification.
1 and 2 represent the sheets of the boiler water leg connected by a stay tube 3, and while I have illustrated my improvements in connection with a stay tube, it is of course to be understood that the device may be located at any point where the necessary heat may be had.

but I do not limit myself to this particular shape,and have illustrated in Fig. 4 as a modification, the parts in rectangular or angular formation, and may so shape the header or use any other shape desired. The outer section5 is appreciably larger in di ameter than the inner section 6, and each section is formed of a single metal sheet, the intermediate portions of the respective sheets constituting the ends of the header, while the edges of the respective sections are goined as will be hereinafter described. In section 6, I locate a ring 7 which constitutes a reinforcement and a threaded opening 8 is formed in the section 6 and ring 7 to re ceive the threaded end of a pipe 9. A ring 10 is located inside of section 5, and said ring and section are formed with a screwthreaded opening 11 to receive the threaded end of a pipe 12. In assembling the two sections, the edge of section 6 is flared outwardly as shown at 13, while the edge of sec tion 5 is straight as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Section 6 is then positioned inside of section 5 with the edges of section 6 bearing directly against the ring 10, and while in this position the edge of section 5 is bent inwardly as shown at 14 so as to fit snugly against the outwardly bent portion 13 of section 6. Aring 15 is secured within the outwardly bent portion 13 of section 6 and bears directly against the edge of ring 7, and as indicatedin the drawings, I join all of the parts wherever possible by welding. These welding points I have indicated by the reference numeral 16, so that the parts are permanently connected and rendered steam and water tight. It will thus be noted that the header is formed without rivets or bolts, and the parts are rigidly secured together. y
A removable plate 17 is secured to the ring 15 by screws 18 which project through perforated ears 19 on the plate and are screwed into threaded openings 20 in the ring. The intermediate portion of the plate is conical as shown at 21 so as to readily guide the same into proper position in the ring, and this plate 21 is provided with a central opening 22 in which a tube 23 is secured. The inner section 6 is provided with a central opening 24: inwhich a tube 25 is secured. The tube 25 projectsbeyond the end of tube 23, and is closed at its inner end as shown at 26, while the end of tube 23 is open allowing a free circulation of water and steam through the header and between the tubes as will be readily understood. The outer end of section 5 is formed with a relatively large opening 27 conforming in shape and slightly larger than the plate 17'so as to permit the plate 17 with its tube 23 to be removed through the header and also permit the screws 18 to be easily adjusted as occasion may require. The plate 28 closes the opening 27 and fits snugly within the same, said plate having a bolt 29 projecting outside of the header and through a yoke 30 to-securely clamp the plate inside the header.
In the modification'shown in Fig. 4:, the
parts are of general rectangular shape, but in other respects the construction is like that above described, and I have used the same reference numerals to indicate like parts. i In themodification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the header is elongated or oblong shape, and the plate 31 corresponding to plate 17 of the form above described is oblong or elongated to accommodate a number of tubes '23 which projectinto outer tubes 25, and in this modificatiom'as in the other, I have used the same reference numerals to indicate like parts.
In them'odification illustrated in Fig; 7, a plurality of tubes23 are supported in a circular plate 17, but in other respects the construction is precisely like that above described; i
It will therefore be noted that my improved construction of header may be utilized in connection with one or more series of tubes arranged in any approved inanner,;and the invention is not limited to any particular arrangement of tubes, but is broadly to the construction ofheader in connection with any construction of tubes which is practicable.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit my self to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A header, comprising two sections, each section composed of a single metal sheet, the intermediate portions of the respective sheets constituting the ends of the header, one section smaller than the other, the smaller section fitting within the larger section and secured thereto, and a ring fitting Withinthe larger section and against which the edge of the smaller section bears, substantially as described. 5. A header, comprising two sections, each section composed of a single metal sheet, the intermediate portions of the respective sheets constituting the ends of the header,
one section smaller than the other, the smaller section having its edge flared outwardlyand located inside of the larger section, the larger section having its edge bent inwardly upon the outwardly bent edge of the smaller section, a ring fitting within the larger section and against which the edge of the smaller section bears, a ring secured in the outwardly flared portion of the smaller section, a plate removably secured to said rmg, sa d plate having a central;
opening therein, and an open ended tube secured in said plate, said smaller section having an opening therein, and a tube secured insaid last-mentioned opening, said last-mentioned tube inclosing the first-men tioned tube, extending beyond the first-menintermediate portions tioned tube and having a closed end, substantially as described.
6. A header comprising two sections, each section composed of a single metal sheet, the of the respective sheets constituting the ends of the header, the edges of said sections overlapping and welded together, rings in both sections fitting the inner faces thereof, said rings and sections having threaded openings, threaded pipes projecting into the threaded openings,
the end of the smaller section supporting a pipe, a removable plate secured between the sections and supporting an inner pipe, said outer section having an opening therein, and means closing said opening, substantially as described.
7. A header of the character described having a ring secured within the same, "a removable plate having perforated ears at its edges, screws located in said perforated ears and screwed into the ring, tubes supported by the header and plate respectively, said header having an opening in its outer end conforming in shape to the shape of the plate, and means normally closing said lastmentioned opening, substantially as described.
8. A header, comprising two sections, each section composed of a single metal sheet, the intermediate portions of the respective sheets constituting the ends of the header, the edges of said sections overlapping and secured together, a plurality of tubes projecting from one header section, a removable plate secured in the header, and a plurality of tubes secured in the plate and projecting into the first-mentioned tubes, substantially as described.
