ceases.
To all whom 2'25 may concern: I
Be it known that I, WARREN,B. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of llorth Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of lilassachusetts, have invented an improvement inlVelts for Boots and Shoes, of which the followin tion, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, .like reference characters on the drawing representing like parts.
T his invention relates to welts for boots and shoes as an article of manufacture.
The character of the invention may be best and stood by reference to the following de scription of illustrative embodiments thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l. a section through a shoe having a welt embodying the invention; Fi 2 on an enlarged scale is a sectional detail of in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of welt; Fig. l is a sectional view illus welt shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 1s a view of the welt shown in Fig. 4 Fig. 6 is a plan view of Fig. sectional view illustrating ufacture of a modified sectional complete. 5; Fig. 7 ,is a a. step in the manform 01"" welt; and View showing the latter welt complete.
Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 is shown a. shoe comprising the usual upper l, insole 3 and a welt 5 embodying the invention. The welt has a longitudinal groove 6 on the under side thereof and is bent over and secured to the 'upper and inner sole by stitches 7 in the usual manner. An important feature of the invention consists in forming a flange 9 from the body of the Welt. Herein said flange is formed by incising said welt as at one edge thereot, said flange being then bent to project upwardly from the upper face of the body of the welt. angemay be variously formed ac cord ng to the use'so which it is to be put. In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 it is doubled over on a bead or bight so thatwhen shoe (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) its free edge is folded in against the upper adjacent the'seam formed at the union of the upper with the insole. The spring of the leather tending to return the flange to the body of the welti from which it was bent may be sufficient to inaintain said flange Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 17, 1910.

cured to the upper by stitchingor byan' adhesive as desired.
If desired the flange may flat-toned somewhat and formed as shown? in Fig. 3 to lie well under the upper to simu: late the appearance of a shoe having a cork sole.
In some instances the flange need notbe doubled on itself but; may be of single thickness as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The flange may then have its free edge skived or otherwise finished to blend gradually to the upper against which it lies.
A welt such to Goodyear, McKay-and other shoes and is found to present, a very advantageous construction, addingto the attractive appearance of the shoe and its general strength and at the same time constituting a sort of dam for preventing ingress of water to said -seam. .liurthermore, the welt is simple in construction and cheap to n'ianufacture.
Having described selected embodiments of the invention without limiting myself thereto, what I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
ilaims.
1. An article of manufacture, a welt having a flange incised from the body portion. thereof and bent therefrom to cover the seam at the junction of an upper-with an be bent over and insole. v 2. As an article of manufacture, a welt having its body lnclsed longitudinally thereof forming a flange, said flange being bent from said body to present a seam proltecting member.
3. As an article of manufacture, a welt having its body incised longitudinally thereof forming a flange, said flange being bent from said body doubled over to bresent a seam finishing eadf {L As an article of ma 'ufacture a ;welt ,having its body incise longitudinally 'tliercofforming a flange, said flange being bent from said bodyto present a-seam finishing member projecting outwardly from the upper face of the welt intermediate the longitudinal edges thereof.
5. As an article of manufacture, a welt longitudinal flange incised from said body and bent to project therefrom intermediate the. longitudinal edges thereof to from a Water resisting dam at the union of the upper with the sole.
6. As an article of manufacture, :1 Welt and a finishing flange projecting from said having a body provided With a portion 1 body to lie adjacent the union of the upper adapted to be stitched to the upper; and a t with the sole. finishing bead incised and bent from said In testimony whereof, I have signed my 15 body adjacent said stitch receiving portion, name to this specification, in the presence of said bead 1being formed to lie adjacent the two subscribing Witnesses. union of t 1e up er With the sole. 1 T 1 T r 1 7.
