B. HORDIGH. NOVELTY FOLDING BOX.
APPLICATION FILED JANJQ, 1911.
Patented July 4, 1911.
'1 lvlhcascoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IBOLESLAUS HORDICH, OF WEST 'NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 HANSEN &
00., OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW'J NOVELTY FOLDING BOX.
Application filed January 19, 1911. Serial No. 603,539.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BonnsLAUs Honnrori,
ble of being used for advertising purposes.v
The object of the invention is to provide a box which may be used for candies, cigarettes, or other contents, and which will also serve as an advertising means for calling at tention to the-contents thereof, or for other purposes, as making it an attractive box so as to enhance the sale of the goods packed therein.
To this end, the invention consists of a box providedon its face with a pictureof a man, animal or any desired object, and having openings cut at the mouth and eyes, the cover of the'box being provided with a flap having a projection adapted to pass outwardly through the opening at the month, said projection being formed and colored to represent a tongue of the man, animal or other object depicted, and said flap having printed thereon two pairs of eyes, one above the other, either pair being adapted toregister with and show through said openings at the eyes. By moving the cover of the box, various effects may be produced by the movement of the same past openings in the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective View of one form of box according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form of the invention, and Figs. 3 and 4: show vertical sectional views passing from front to rear through the boxes of Figs. 1 and 2 respectively.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing, my invention is shown applied to a folded box 5 of the kind ordinarily used for candies or like merchantable goods. On the front of the box is printed a picture6 of a man for instance, the Wall of the box being provided with openings 7 in place of the eye-balls of the picture and with Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented July4, 1911.
an opening 8 in place of the mouth-opening of the picture. The box isprovided, asis usual, with side cover-tabs 9 and an outer cover-lid 10, the cover-lid 10 being provided with a flap 11 terminating in a long projection 12 adapted to pass through the opening 8 in the box,'as is clearly shown. Two pairs of eyes 13 are printed on the flap 11 either of which pairs is adapted to register with the eye-openings 7 of the box. The eyes,
mouth, tongue and'all other parts may be printed in appropriate colors, if desired, and
by moving the lid various effects may be produced. 7
.Referring to Figs. 2 and .4, the second form of the invention comprises a foldingbox 15 provided with an extension front 16 which extends upwardly to form a continuation of the front of the box, a picture of a figure being printed on the front of the box and extending onto the extension 16. In this case the mouth opening 18 is in the front of the box portion, but the eye-openings 17 are in the extension 16. The lid 20 is providedwith a flap 21 terminating in a tongue 22. Two pairs of eyes 23 are print- .ed on the flap 21. WVhen'the box 15 is packed for shipping, the extension 16 is folded over the top of the box, as shown by the dotted lines of Fig. 4, the folding crease being shown by 25 in Fig. 2.
When the boxes are closed the upper pair of eyes show through the eye-openings. When, however, the covers 10 and 20 are raised somewhat, the lower pair of eyes show and the covers 10 and 20 may be manipulated, thus causing the eyes and tongue of the figures to move, and thus presenting a variety of effects.
These boxes may be provided with advertising space, as at 24 on Fig. 2 on which the name of the contents of the box or other matter may be printed or both.
It is to be particularly understood that I do not limit myself to the details of the forms of the invention herein described, as various changes in construction and details may be made, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. While in both forms I have shown the representative of the human face, other pictures, as animals or other objects may be shown instead, the main feature of the invention being to provide a box with a picture thereon having openings, and a lid so constructed as to cooperate .with the openings of the box,
and having pictures, thereon-supplementing the pictures on the box, and producing thereby a changeableeflect by the operation of the lid. Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent '1. A combined receptacle and toy onsiste ing of a box 11 ving aimxteriorpicture and cpenmgs through said picture and an extension flap attached to said box and provided with decorations complementary to said picture.
3. A combined receptacle and toy consisting of abox having an exterior picture and openings through said picture and a v1- bratable extension flap attached to said box and having a series of decorations visible successively through said openings and complementary to said picture.
4. The combination of the side of a box having a picture of a human being with openings for the eyes and mouth, and a flap having a projecting portion passing through the mouth opening and having eyes depicted thereon visible through the openings of the side of the box.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of'two subscribing witnesses.
BOLESLAUS HORDICH.
