Speoioation of Letters Patent.
Patentedduly 4, 191i Application filed October 18, 1909. Serial No. 523,359.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Hons, a citizen of the .United States, residing at' Fort lVorth, county of Tarrant, and State of -TeXas, have invented ce'itain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which tlie following is a specification. v
This invention relates to signs and particularly'illuminated signs, and the object is to provide means for reducing the cost f illuminated signs by dispensing with the large number of lights now used and necessary tol produce advertising signs and other illuminations and substituting prisms for the lights and using a few lights, the prisms serving to retract and spread the light.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explainedA in the following description and Athe invention will be morev particularly pointed out in the claim. ylReference is had to the accompanying drawings which i'orm a part of this application and specification.
Figure l is a perspective View of a sign containing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail View, enlarged, illustratingthe manals ner of mounting theI lights and prisms. Fig. 3 is a view` of the interior end oit' one Fig. 4 is a broken view of the casing, showing the provision for securing a prism in lace. Figny is a side elevation of one of tlie prisms.
Similar charactersof reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
A broken signv casing is shown in the drawings for villustrating the improvements. A casing 1 of any` suitable .design may be used. Pictures, letters, or other'adverti'sing 'forms are represented on the casing by prisms and the prismsV are illuminated b lights. Each letter or design is formed f' a plurality of prisms 2.l Each prism Ais composed of a cylindrical body portion 3, diamond-shaped facets 4, and a pyramid portion 5. The light is received by the pyrau mid portion and retracted and transmitted through the prism and dispersed through the diamond-shaped facet. The dispersing portion 4 has a eater area in cross-section than the cylindrlcal portion and thus forms an annular shoulder which rests against the casing 1.' The casing 1- is perforated to re- 'the light.
of May, i908.
on one side of the slit is raised at 7 and the casing is raised about the greater portion of ceive each prism and a slit 6 is formed in\ the casing from the perforation. -The casing` each perforation to form a ,rim' 8. The
prism, has two inclined Wings or segment flanges 9. The risms are secured to the casing by inserting the pyramid portions' through the perforations and turning tlie prisms so that-the .Wings or flanges on one side will pass through the slits 6 and then the turning is continued until the Wings or flanges on the other side pass throu h the slits v6. The wings or flanges 9 are irmed on the cylindrical portion of the prism. The-diamondshaped dispersing facet rests against the outside of the casing and the wings 9 engage the raised edge or rim 8 and thus clamp the prism in place. The flan es 9 are wedged against the rim or raised e ge 8. The part 4 of the prisms is formed into diamond-shaped facets in order that there may be the greatest possible dispersion of The lights for illuminating the prisms are placed inside of thecasing l and are arrangedabout the prisms so that the light will strike all parts of the pyramid portions of the prisms. Any suitable lights may be used.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,`
A sign comprisi g a casing having opensov ings and slits in th casing about said openings, raised edges on the inside of the casing at said slits, a plurality of' prisms'to form letters or symbols, each prism having a pyra` mid portion Within the casing, a amondshaped facet portion on the outside of the casing and a cylindrical portion engaged by said casing, said facet portion forming an annular shoulder, cam-`shapedribs on said cylindrical portion for engaging s'aid raised edges to clamp said flange agalnst the-outside of the casing, and means for illuminating said pyramid portions of the prisms.
In testimony whereof, I set m hand in the presence of two Witnesses, this 7th day HARRY IIOAGr. Witnesses:
A. Il. JACKSON, J. WT. S'rrrr..
