Description

c. H. HULSE.
ILLUMINATBD SHADED LETTER. AIPPLIGAI'ION FILED FEB. 11, 1909.
Patented July- 20, 1909.
.JZHaZaa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. HULSE, OF NORTH YAKIMA, WASHINGTON.
ILLUMINATED SHADED LETTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs I-I. HuLsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Yakima, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminated Shaded Letters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in illuminated shaded letters.
The object of the invention is to provide an illuminated shaded letter having a raised outline which may be readily distinguished at night as well as in day light.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a letter constructed in ac cordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the letter which is here shown as the letter I. In the construction of the letter, I provide a trough 1 comprising a back or base plate 2, cut in the shape of the letter and the shading and around the edge of the back or base plate 2 is arranged a right angular outwardly projecting flange 3. On the base plate adjacent to one edge of the same is arranged the outline of the letter, said outline being preferably constructed of a strip 4 of suitable material, which in the finished letter is preferably gilded. The strip 4 has a rounded outer edge. These strips are arranged at suitable distances apart to form the letter of the desired Width.
Arranged within the outline of the letter at suitable intervals are electric light sockets 5 with which are adapted to be engaged incandescent lamps 6, the sockets project through the base plate and have on their rear ends binding posts to which the electric conducting cables are attached.
On the back or base plate 2 is arranged a low flange 7 which forms the outline of the shading 8 which is applied tothe letter. The shading 8 may be tinted in any desired color but the back plate within the outline strip 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the letter itself is covered with a coating of white enamel. The space 9 between the shading flange 7 and the outer flange of the trough is preferably colored black.
By constructing and shading the letter as herein shown and described and arranging the colors as specified, the gold outline of the letter may be readily distinguished at night as well as in day light, thus providing an attractive illuminated sign which may be easily read at any time.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing anyof the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. An illuminated shaded letter comprising a back or base plate, a flange arranged around the outer edge of said base plate to form a trough,'a raised strip on said base plate to form the outline of the letter, a flange arranged to form the outline of the shading, and means to secure a series of incandescent lamps within the outline of the letter.
2. An illuminated shaded letter comprising a base plate, a flange arranged around the outer edge of said plate to form a trough, a gilded strip arranged on the base plate to form the outline of the letter, said letter within the outline being enameled white, a colored shading arranged on the base plate, a flange inclosing said shading and forming an outer space between itself and the outer flange of the trough, said outer space being darkly colored, and a series of electric lamp sockets arranged within the, outline space of the letter.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
