GEORGE W: PHELPS, OF FARMINGTON, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
HAY-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2'7, 1911.
Application filed July 22, 1910. Serial No. 573,282.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PHELPS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Farmington, in the county of San Juan and Territory of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hay presses, and it has particular reference to simple and improved means for projecting the charge of hay into the press box in advance of the plunger so as to be partly compressed or formed into a tight wad to be subsequently forced by the plunger into the compression chamber of the press.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing a duplex press constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of a single press constructed in accordance with the invention.
Corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the two press boxes, portions of which are shown at 1, 1, are suitably connected together by bars or connecting members 2, 2, whereby said press boxes are also suitably spaced apart. One of the connecting members 2 aflords a bearing for a shaft 3 carrying at one end a wheel or pulley 4 adapted to receive motion from any suitable source of power, it being understood that a spur wheel may be used in place of the ordinary band pulley which has been shown, and that motion may be supplied from a horse power or from a motor of any description.
The followers or plungers 5 5 which operate in the press boxes are connected together by a stem or bar 6 which is connected by a link or pitman 7 with a wrist pin 8 upon a wheel or disk 9 carried by the shaft 3 and whereby, when the shaft is rotated, a reciprocatory motion will be imparted to the stem 6 and to the follower carried thereby, it being obvious that when one of the followers is projected into a press box, the other follower moves in an outward direction in the press box wherein it operates.
Each of the press boxes is provided with a feed opening 10 and with a hopper 11. Suitably pivoted or fulcrumed upon the inner end of each press box is a packer P consisting of a lever 12 mounted upon a pin or shaft 13 and having at its upper end an arm 14 extending in the direction of the hopper of the press box with which the packer is connected, said arm having a terminal head 15. The downwardly extending end of each lever 12 is curved to constitute a cam 16 lying in the path of a pin 17 which extends laterally from the stem or bar 6. The lever arm or cam 16 is also made sufficiently heavy to overbalance the arm 14:, which latter is thus capable of being raised by gravity of said lever arm 16 to the position shown at the left of Fig. 1 to enable a charge to be placed in the hopper 10.
When the plunger carrying stem or bar 6 moves in one direction, one of the packers P will be thrown or gradually moved by contact of the pin 17 with the face of the cam 16 to the tilted position shown at the right of Fig. 1, thus causing the arm 14 to swing within the hopper and to force a charge previously placed in the hopper downwardly into the press box in advance of the follower which at this time is withdrawn from beneath the feed opening. By the same movement of the stem 6, the pin 17 will recede beneath the arm 16 of the other packer, thus permitting the latter to swing by ravity to the position shown at the left of Fig. 1, thus enabling a charge to be placed in the hopper to be subsequently acted upon by the packer.
Under the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, only a single pressbox, here designated 1, is shown, said box being provided with a forwardly extending arm or bracket 2 affording a bearing for the shaft 3 carrying the transmission wheel 4 and the wheel or disk 9 having a wrist pin 8 which is connected by a link or pitman 7 with the follower stem 6. In other respects, the construction is precisely the same as applied to the duplex press above described, and the'parts are designated by the same numerals of reference.
In the construction of the press box or boxes, the tightening rods 20 at the tail ends of said boxes are provided with tightening nuts 21 having handles 22 whereby they may be conveniently manipulated, thus avoiding the use of a wrench in adjusting the nuts to regulate the tension upon the bale that is being expelled from the press.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the character described,a
press box, a plunger mounted for reciprocathe feed opening and a downwardlyextending gravity arm having a curved cam face lying in the path of the pin extending from the plunger carrying stem.
2. A device of the character described comprising two press boxes, each having a feed opening and a hopper,'plungers operating in the press boxes, a stem connecting the plungers and having laterally extending pins, bars connecting the press boxes and spacing them apart, a shaft supported for rotation upon one of said bars, a wheel upon said shaft having a wrist pin, a pitman connecting the latter with the plunger carrying stem, and packers mounted pivotally upon the press boxes adjacent to the hoppers, each of said packers including a laterally extending arm adapted to be projected through the feed opening, and a downwardly extending gravity arm having a curved cam face lying in the path of one of the pins extending from the plunger carrying stem.
In testimony whereof I aiflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
