Be it known that we, JAMEs A. DICKEL and LEE H. BA ER, citizens of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello' andStataofIowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hay- Presses, of which the'following is a specification.
The present invention has relation to devices for compressing fibrous material such as straw, hay and the like, the purpose being to provide a press'which will insure a maximum compressive force being exerted by the expenditure of a minimum amount of en ergy.-
The invention relates moreparticularly to novel actuating means for the plunger, packerand cut-off, the plunger being operated by a twofold movement, whereby in its initial stroke the material is compressed rapidly and in thefinishing stroke the material is gradually compressed by a progressively increasing leverage, the several parts being operated by. two elements, the one being a cam and-the other an eccentric.
The invention also consists of a supplementary chamber in the rear, of the baling chamber, such supplementary chamber having yieldable plates at the top which serve to retard the dischargeof the bale and thereby insure a thorough compression thereof, with the result that a rebound isprevented when the plunger is released from the action of the cam and returns to a normal position preliminary to the next compressive stroke. the arrangement being such asoto admit of followers being readily placed in position.
v The invention consists of the novel features, details-of construction and combination of parts, .which hereinafter will he more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a press embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a different relative arrangement of the, parts. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the baling chamber and plunger. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on the line avw of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The framework of the device is indicated generally by the numeral 1 and may be of any construction depending upon the arrangement of the working parts. A baling chamber 2 is formed at one end of the framework and the material to be baled is fed thereto through an opening 3 in the top of such baling chamber. A hopper 4 is fitted to the top of the baling chamber and the opening in its bottom coincides with the feed opening 3. A slide 5 mounted in ways is adapted to close the feed opening 3 and prevent material entering the baling cham-' her during the forward stroke of the plunger in the formation and compressionof the bale. The slide 5 preferably consists of a plate, the opposite edges of which enter 1ongitudinal grooves formed in the side pieces of the framework 1. The plunger 6 is arranged to reciprocate within the baling chamber 2 and is provided at its upper edge with a guard 7 which prevents any of the material dropping from the hopper into the baling chamber in the rear of the plunger as the same moves forward. The plunger rod 8 is pivotally connected to the plunger 6 and likewise has pivotal connection to thelower end of a vertically disposed lever 9. The lever 9 is mounted upon a cross piece 10 which has its ends mounted in the ways 11 in which the slide or out off 5 operates. A pitman 12 connects the upper end of the lever 9 with an eccentric 13 secured to a transverse shaft 14 mounted in the framework 1 at the end opposite the baling chamber. A rod or bar 15 receives the cross piece 9 and is provided with a cross piece 16 which has its ends fitted in the ways 11. A roller 17 at the free end of the rod or bar 15 is arranged to ride upon a cam 18 which is secured to the transverse shaft 14. The part 15 together with the cross pieces 10 and 16 constitutes a head which is slidably mounted in the upper portion of. the framework and is utilized to transmit movement to the le ver 9, slide 5 and adjunctive parts. The cam I 21 to which the power is applied by-means of a pulley 22 and drive belt meeting from a suitable source of power.
The packer for tamping the material fed into the baling chamber consists of a bar 23 having a head 24 at its lower end and arranged to move through the hopper i and feed opening 3. A bail 25 receives the packer and passes through a transverse opening formed in the bar 23 near the upper end thereof, the side members of the bail being journaled in standards 26 rising from the framework 1. A lever 27 is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends to the stand ards 26 out of line with the pivotal connection of the bail 25 with such standards. The lever 27 comprises similar members which are arranged at opposite sides of the framework near the standards 26 so as to receive the members 12 and 1 5 between them. The lever 27 has a vertical arrangement and the end portions of its side members are brought together, the upper ends of such side portions being pivoted to the bar 23 the lower ends to the shaft 28 and the lower ends of such side members being further connected by means of a link 29 with the plunger rod 8 and the lower ends of the lever 9. The link 29 comprises members which are transversely spaced and have a divergent arrangement. Contractile springs 30 connect opposite ends of the cross piece 10 with the framework and normally tend to hold the roller 17 in contact with the cam 18.
Plates 31 are located in the rear of the hopper 4: and constitute the top of the supplemental chamber 32 formed in the rear of the baling chamber 2 and practically constitute a part thereof. Edge portions of the plates 31 overlap, and such plates are pivotally mounted at their forward edges and have a limited vertical movement at their rear edges. Arms 33 project laterally from the ends of the plates 31 and project beyond the sides of the framework 1. Springs 34 are attached to the projecting ends of the arms 33 and eXert a downward pull thereon whereby the rear edge portions ofthe plates 31 are held depressed so as to offer a resistance to the discharge of the bale. The tension of the spring 34: may be regulated to admit of the resistance offered to the discharge of the bale by the plates 31 being adjustable.
In the operation of the press, the material to be formedinto a bale is supplied to the hopper e and passes into the baling chamber through the feed opening 3 and is tamped by means of the packer, which is forced downward by the action of the lever 9 and eccentric 13, such parts being arranged to move the upper end of the lever 9 rearward and its lower end forward, such action serving through the link 29 to cause the lever 27 to swing into a horizontal position. The packer is held in an upright position by reason of the connection of the bail 25 with the bar 23. and standards 26 out of line with the pivotal connection of the lever 27 with such parts. action of the packer the eccentric operates to draw the upper end of the lever 9 forward thereby resulting in the lower end of such lever moving rearward and pulling the lower end of the lever 27 along with it through the link connection 29 with the re suit that the lever 27 is moved from a horizontal into an upright position, thereby lifting the packer or withdrawing the same from the baling chamber. During this operation the cam 18' pushes the rod or bar 15 rearward thereby causing the slide 5 to close the feed opening 3 and the plunger 6 to advance and compress the material in the baling chamber. The lever 9 is advanced simultaneously with its rocking upon the cross piece 10, hence at the beginning of its movement the plunger 6 advances rapidly but in the final movement of the plunger it is advanced slowly and with great force thereby compressing the bale. The final movement of the plunger is effected by the rocking of the lever 9 on thecross piece 10 such rocking of the lever being effected by the action of the eccentric 13. The cam 18 is of such formation as to embody a projecting part which suddenly clears the rod or bar 15 thereby permitting the quick return of the plunger through the action of the spring 34. The feed opening 3 being thus uncovered a second charge of material enters the baling chamber and is tamped in the manner here in set forth.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when d'e sired as are within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a press embodying a chamber and a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, a lever, connecting means between such lever and plunger, a movable support for the lever and means for actuating the movable support and at the same time rocking the lever.
In a press embodying a baling chamber and plunger arranged to reciprocate therein, a movable support, a lever mounted upon the movable support and connecting means between such lever and plunger,
After the II O whereby the latter is operated by a twofold movement due to the rocking of the lever and the movement of the support for such lever.
3. In a press embodying a baling chamber and plunger arranged to operate therein,aslidable support,a lever fulcrumed upon the support, connecting means between the lever and plunger and means for imparting a rocking movement to the lever simultaneously with the movement of the support.
4. In a press, the combination of a baling chamber having a feed opening, a plunger arranged to operate in the baling chamber, a sliding member, a cut oil connected with the sliding member and adapted to close the feed opening, a lever mounted upon the sliding member and connecting means between such levers and plunger.
