SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,688, dated d'anuary ll 1888,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH \V. TRABUE. a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Macoupimand State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in baling-presses; and it consistsin the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a baling-press embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is partly a top plan view and partly a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken'on the line :0 x

A represents a pair of ground-sills, which are arranged parallel with each other, and are connected by means of a series of transverse beams, B.
0 represents, a floor or platform, which is arranged between the sills A and extends for a suitable'distance thereon, the said floor or platform being supported by the beams B. At
a suitable distance from the rear ends of theground-sills the floor or platform is provided with a series of vertical longitudinal openings, D.

G represents side walls, which are secured to the inner sides of the standards F and F and extend from the beams E to the sills A.
The beams E are connected together by means of the cross-beam H at their rearends, a cross-' beam, I, arranged transversely between the standards F, and a beam, K, at the front ends 7 of beams E on the upper sides thereof.

L represents a platform, which is arranged between the beams Fl and extends forward thereon from the cross-beams H to a point in line with the standards F, the said platform forming the upper side of the press-box, of
which the floor or platformO forms the lower side. On the upper sides of the beams E, and
extending rearward from the standards F a suitable distance, are side walls L, which are provided in their outer sides with longitudinal horizontal grooves M.

Inasmuch as the platform]? terminates at the front cross-beam, H, the front portion of the feed-hopper is bottomless.
Y represents a transverse holder, which is arranged on the front end of the platform P, and is provided at its upper corners with projecting arms Z, that extend through the slots 0 and enter the grooves M. and are adapted to normally raise the holder, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. On the front side of the holder Yis a cross'board, B, which connects the side walls of the feedhopper.
The rear end of the platform or top L of the press-box is not secured either to the beams E or to the cross-beam H, and is thereby adapted to be depressed.
' D represents a screw which engages a vertical opening in the center of the beam H and bears upon a plate on the upper side of the top or platform L, at the rear end thereof, the function of this screw being to force the rear end of the platform downward in the position shown in Fig. 2, and thereby cause the said platform to be inclined downward rearwardly toward the bottom platform, 0, for the purpose to be hereinafter explained.
E represents a pair of vertical bolt-rods, which connect the rear ends of the sills A and the beams E and prevent the latter from springing upward from the sills. The grooves M in the sides L of the feedhopper are covered by means of detachable metallic plates E", thereby preventing hay or other foreign substance from entering the grooves M and in terfering with the operation of the machine. The side walls G of the compression-chamber of the press-box are provided with horizontal slots G near their upper and lower sides.
1 represents vertical rods, which extend from the sills A to the beams E on the other sides of the sides G and at suitable distance inrear of the standards F, and on the said rods are pivoted detents K, which work in the slots G, extend longitudinally through the same, and are provided at their front ends with arms L. The arms L are connected in pairs by vertical bars M.
Nrepresents coiled extensilesprings, which bear between the sides G and the opposing inner sides of the bars M, and serve normally to turn the detents K on their pivotal rods, so that the rear ends of the detents are caused to project beyond the inner sides of the sides G. Stop-pins O are provided for the detents K, to limit the movement of the latter.
P represents a follower, which is adapted to move longitudinally in the press-box and to slide upon the bottom platform, 0. The said follower is provided at its front corners with vertical arms R, which project above its upper side.
S represents a leaf, which has its front end pivoted between the upper ends of arms R, the said leaf extending rearward over the follower and being arranged at a suitable distance above the same. A spring, T, has its front end secured on the upper side of the fol-' lower. The rear end of the said spring bears under the leaf S to normally raise the same. The upper side of the leaf S is covered by a metallic plate, U", and the rear end of the said u plate is bent downward over the rear end of close the space between the opposing sides of theleaf and the follower. In the sides of the follower are diagonal grooves W, which coincide with the slots G. v The said grooves are deeper at their rear ends than at their front ends, and are thereby adapted to force the rear ends of the detents Koutward as the follower moves in the press-box, thereby moving the detents out of the path of the follower.
X represents a transverse driving -shaft, which isjournaled in a pair of blocks, Y, on the upper sides of beams E, near the front ends thereof. To the center of this shaft is attached a driving-pulley, Z.
A represents a pairof fly-wheels, which are attached to the shaft X on opposite sides of the pulley Z. On the outer ends of the shaft X, which project beyond the outer sides of the blocksY,are featheredspur-pinions B". Coiled extensile springs G are placed on and are secured to the outer ends of the shaft X and bear against the outer sides of the pinions.
D" represents a transverse shaft which is journaled in bearing blocks E on the beams E at a suitable distance in front of shaft X. The said shaft D is provided with spur-wheels G, which mesh with the pinions B". On the ends of the shaft D which project beyond the wheels G, are secured pinions H.
1 represents a shaft which is journaled in bearing-blocks on the rear sides ofstandards F. The ends of this shaft are provided with spun wheels K", which mesh with pinions D", and at the center of the shaft is a crank,- L".
M represents a pitman, which has its front end connected to the shaft and its rear end pivoted to a head, N, that projects from the front side of the follower P. A block, 0, is rigidly secured to this head and projects forward therefrom, and in the upper end of the said block isa transverse horizontal groove, P
R represents a transverse beam which connects the upper ends of the standards F", near their upper ends. It will be observed by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 that the feeder is arranged over the bottomless portion of the feed hopper, and is adapted to move downward through the same and to enter the compression-chamber of the pressbox when the wheels K are rotated and the walking-beam is caused to oscillate. As the successive stratas of material gradually fill the compressing-chamber, theextension G of the feeder is moved upward on the same by the material in the compression-chamber as the feeder moves downward, thereby preventing too great strain from being exerted on the feeder.

At the initial rearward movement of the follower the latter forces one of the partitions R which has been previously placed against its rear side, rearward through the compression chamber of the press- 7' box until the detents K engagethe front side of the said partition and prevent the same from following the follower as the latter reverses its movement and movesforward in the press-box. The operator, standing on the platform or foot-board U throws a quantity of hay into the feed-hopper, and as the follower moves forward in the press-box the hay-condenser, which is connected to the follower by means of the yoke, moves forward in the hopper, and thereby packs the hay into the front bottomless portion of the hopper. On the succeeding rearward motion of the follower the hay-condenser moves rearward, thereby releasing its compression of the hay in the hopper, and the feeder W descends upon the said hay and forces it downward into the compression-chamber of the feed-box,where it is forced by the rearward movement of the follower against the partition board R The latter yields to the pressure of the hay and moves rearward in the pressbox. On the succeeding forward stroke of the follower the holder Y is forced downward by reason of the gnidearms V of the hay-condenser moving forward over the forward upwardly-inclined spring-arms, A, thereby causing the holder to engage the hay that is compressed against the partition and preventing the same from moving forward after the follower. At each succeeding rearward stroke of the follower an additional quantity of hay is packed against the partition, and the latter moves farther and farther rearward in the press-box until a sufficient quantity of hay has been pressed to form a bale, when the operator, stationed on the platform or footboard U, inserts another partition in place,and the operation before described is repeated. The gong, hereinbefore described, is arranged at a distance in rear of the compression-chamber of the press-box equal to the desired length of the bales, and thereby, as each partition-board in succession moves rearward past the gong, its spring-actuated tappet arm S engages the arm 0 of the gong-hammer and operates the same, thereby causing the gong to sound, which is the signal for the operator to insert another partition in the front end of the compressionchamber. The screw D is turned down, so as to depress the rear end of the platform L, and thereby offer so much resistance to the rearward motion of the hay as it is driven'back by the follower as to cause the bay to be compactly compressed. As the hay moves rearward in the pressbox, the attendants pass wires or cords around the bales and fasten them. After the press-box becomes completely filled with bales ofhay, each additional bale that is formed causes the bale at the rear end of the press box to be ejected therefrom, as will be very readily understood, and the partition-boards ejected with the bales are picked up and used again in the press, as before.
If it be desired to stop the operation of the press at any time, this may be accomplished by grasping one of the cords E and drawing down upon the same, thereby causing the cord to operate the lever-arm B and turn the shaft Z" and cause the crank-wheels A to operate the levers F, so as to move the pinions B outward on the ends of the driving-shaft and release them from engagementwith the wheels G.
Between the extreme fro ntl ends of the beams E is journaled a roller, K which'supports the lower side of the endless belt that passes over the driving-pulley and prevents the crank L from coming in contact with the said bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the press-box, the follower therein, the feeder-hopper on the upper side of the press-box having the horizontal grooves M in the sides, and the slots N, communicating with the said grooves, the condenser movable longitudinally in the feed-hopper and having the front Tin said hopper, the guide-arms V, working in the grooves M, and the pins or bolts X, connecting the said guidearms and the front T and extending through the slots N, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a baling-press, of the press-box, the follower, the vertically-movable holder Y, the spring to normally elevate the same, and the hay-compressor movablein unison with the follower and adapted to automatically depress the holder when the haycompressor advances, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a baling-press, of the press-box, the holder Y, having the spring arms A, to normally elevate the same, and the hay-compressor movable in unison with the follower and provided with the arms V to bear upon the springs A, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a baling-press, of the feed-hopper on the press-box,having the horizontal grooves M in its sides, the hay-eondenser movable in the feedhopper and havingthe guide-arms V, working in grooves M, and movable plates F, secured to the sides of the feed-hopper and covering the grooves M and the arms V, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the press-box, the feed-hopper thereon having the grooves M in its sides, the holder Y, having the springarms to normally elevate the same, said springarms being located in the lower sides of the grooves M, the compressor movable longitudinally in the feed-hopper and having the guidearms V, working in the grooves M and adapted to depress the springarms, and the removable plates F secured to the sides of the feedhopper and covering the grooves M and the mechanism therein, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the press box having the compressiolrchamber, the feed-hopper arranged over the press-box and extending over the compression-chamber, the vertically-movable holder Y,arranged at the rear upper side of the compression-chamber and having the spring-arms A,to normally raise the same, the follower arranged in the press-box, the hay- IOC condenser arranged in the feed-hopper and adapted to slide therein, the said hay-condenser having the arms bearing on the spring arms A to operate the holder, and the yoke connecting the condenser to the follower, substantially as described.
7. The combination, in a bale-press, of the press-box having the feed-hopper on its upper side and the platform or foot-board Ufladapted to be attached to the press-box and having the screen E* connected thereto and movable longitudinally thereon, the said screen being adapted to bear against the feed-hopper, substantially as described.- a v 8. The combination, in a baling-press, of the press-box having the keepers T on its sides and the foot-board or platform U having the hooks at one edge to engage the keepers and provided with the hinged plate W and the supporting-legs, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described,
9. The combination of the foot-board, the platform U adapted to be attached to the press-box of the baling-press and having the guide-rods 0* at its outer side, and the screen hinged to the said guide-rod and movable longitudinally therein, substantially as described.
10. The combination, in a baling-press, of
the press-box having the feed-hopper on its upper side, the follower movable in the pressbox, the hay-condenser movable in the feedhopper and connected to the follower and actuated thereby, the walking-beam, the
feeder pivoted thereto and extending downward into'the hopper and adapted to descend Y out of engagement with the gears, substantially 1 as described.
