Description

@met dtiliiiw,
JOHN BACIIELDEIL` OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 99,619, dated February 8, 1870.
` IMPRGVEMENT IN NECKTIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part o! the sama I, J oHN BA'CHELDER, of Norwich, in the county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Method of Securing the Parts used in making Neckties or Bows, ofwhich the following is a specification.
Of the drawings, forming a part' of this specification- Figure 1 represents a back view of a shield or retainer, perforated andready'for attachment;
Figure 2, a crosssection of the same, with the ends of the elastic cord forming the loop, the fabric for making the tie or bow, and the metallic eyelets, all in position before the eyelets are set; and
Figure 3, a bow, after the eyelets are set.
Figure 4 represents an alternate device, intended to show its applicability to any other form of shield or plate.
rlhe manner of construction and arrangement is as follows:
Through a plate of metal, or otherl hard substance of suoient density to -reslst the pressure of setting the eyelets and the expansion of the elastic cord,- of which the loop is, formed, I make holes for common metallic eyelets, as seen at a and b, in fig. 1.
At the lower edge of the hole 11,1 make two notches of about half the area of a cross-section of the elastic eord c, in which I place the ends of the cord, and then insert the eyelet d, passing it through the fabric J and the shield e, and clinch the eyelet, securing the ends of the loop-cord and fabric to the shield at the same time, and by thevsame eyelet. I also set au eyelet, f, in the hole a, to secure the upper edge of the shield to the fabric. l.
In the alternate device shown by fig. 4, I place a paper or cloth shield, G, between the plate l and the fabric J, and set a loop in thel plate C, and secure all parts by eyelets, as in iig. 3. g V
I do not claim the shield, as oridina'rily constructed.
I claim, as my invention;- y
The retainer E, provided with the notched perforation b, elastic cord c, and eyelet d, with or without th plate I, combined and arranged as described.
JOHN BACHELDER.
