Description

N. PEIZERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON, D. C.
duced gisten @sind dimite.
JOHN B. SGHENOK, OF MATTEAWAN,`NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 99,599, dated February 8, 1870.
To all tvhont it may concern;
Be it` known that I, J OHN B. ScHENcK, of Matte- 'awan, in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Woodworth Flaming-Machines; and I do lherebyr declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to anew and useful improvement in Voodworth, or other planers, where slight adjustment are to be made; and
v It consists in elevating and depressing the cuttercylinder, by moving (longitudinally) a horizontal bar connected with the boxes of the outer cylinder-shaft, by oblique slides, whereby avertical motion is obtained for adjusting the cutters. It also consists in seri-ating the edges ofthe cutters' or knives, for adapting them to cross-grain planing, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanyingplate of drawings- Figure 1 representsa vertical section of the arrange ment through the line-:e a: of tig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical section locking to the right, from the line y y of fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference vindicate corresponding parts.
A is the frame of the machine.
B represents the cutter-cylinder, with the critters attached.
B represents the cutters or knives.
C C represent the cylinder-shaft boxes.
D D represent vertical slides, to which the boxes are attached. v
E E represent' stationary hangers, suspended from the frame, and connected with the vertical slides D, by dovetail on the slides, andr dovetail grooves in the hangers, so that the slides, with the cutters, have a free movement up and down.
F is a horizontal bar,- passiug between the hangers and the slides D, with obliqnely-placed slides, G G, upon its side, as seen in the drawing, which -work in oblique grooves'in the vertical slides D, as indicatedv in dotted lines in the drawing.-
H is a crank-screw, which is connected with the bar F by the lug-nut I.
The screw H is supported from the frame, as seen at J.
lt will be seen, that by turning the screw Hin either directi n, the bar-F is forced one way or the other, whereby the.` shaft and cutters will be raised or lowered by virtue of the oblique slides G, sliding inthe inclined grooves in the upright D, and the adjustment made' in the most complete manner. When the adjustment 'is thus made, the slides are secured in place by the' standing bolts and nuts K K, which project through the slots L L, as seen'in vthe drawing.
For` planing lumber across the grain for certain uses, I groove or serrate the faces or edges of the knives in such manner, as that when the cutter-cylinder revolves, the grooves or serrations in the knives or cutters will not follow each other, but the grooves or serrations will vary, so that the Wood left uncut: by one knife or cutter, will be cnt clean by the next succeeding knife or cutter, and at each revolution-of the critter-cylinder' the cuttingedges between the grooves or serrations will have smoothed the entire surface of the wood being planed, and in this way prevent the wide shavings from clogging the cutter, or tearing the grain of the wood.
In planing stud' witha full-edged or plane knife, a shaving is cut the full width of the piece of lumber; making a long straw-like chip or shaving, which clogs the machine, aud occasions much trouble and delay, as the draught produced by the revolving cylinder will not throw them out.
By the use of the serrated knives, the shavings are cut in short pieces, and the draught keeps them clear of the cutters.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by- Let-ters Patentl 1. The combination of the crank-screw H, support J, nut I, with the bar F,slides G G, sliding in oblique grooves in nprights D, and in horizontal slots in hangers E E, cylinder-axle boxes C C, and cylinder B, all constructed and arranged to operate inthe manner and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the devices above claimed, with the retaining-bolts and nuts K K, in slots L L, of the supports of the axle boxes C O, in the manner and for the purpose described. A
3. The cylinder B, provided with knives or cutters B', having grooves or serrations iu'their cutting-edges, when said grooves or serrations are placed in the several knives, in the manner and for the purpose described.
The above specilicatiouof myv invention signed by me, this 1st day of March, 1869.
