PLANING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,313, dated December 6,1887.
Application filed September 18, 1886. Serial No. 213,852.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM MoHENRY, of Elmira, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to machines for planing and dressing wood; and it consists in certain new and useful constructions and combinations of the several parts thereof, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a planing-machine provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the dotted line 00 x in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of a portion of Fig. 1.
A A are standards, which support the feedrolls R R of the planing-machine in the usual manner. These standards are connected at their lower ends to the frame-work of the planing-machine, and the latter sustains the ordinary revolving planing-cylinder.
The frame of the machine and cylinder is well understood and is not therefore shown,
as it forms no part of the present invention.
The feed-rolls B R are adjusted to the proper distance from each other by screws 0 at each end of the upper roll, which have fixed to their upper ends the bevel-gears cl d. These gears are in turn revolved when it is required to adjust the rolls by bevel-gears d d, attached to the horizontal shaft d, supported in bearings in the standards, and having one end projecting beyond the frame and squared at d to receive a wrench to turn the shaft. The screws 0 0 work through nuts attached to the standards carrying the upper feed-roll, and are provided with bearings attached to the boxes of said roll in the usual manner. The boxes of the upper feed-roll slide up and down in guideways attached to the standards.

My improvement consists in attaching to the lower edge of the housing H, in advance (No model.)
of the upper feed-roll Ri. e. on the feed-in side thereof-a hinged or yielding scraper,E,which moves up and down with the roll, and,having its lower edge brought to bear upon the surfrom all chips or splinters, and especially the gum found on its surface, and prevents the board from being marred by the compression of these hard substances into it and the gum from being taken up on the surface of the roll. The scraper E is made in the form of a bar or plate of steel,with its lower edge sharpened, and is hung upon arms 6 e, which are pivoted at e e to the housing H. One or more spiral springs, e, placed between the arms 6 and the housing, prevent the scraper from swinging or yielding too easily upon its pivots. The scraper is so hung that the pressure of the board, in passing beneath and against it,tends to raise it by swinging it away from the latter, thus preventing its cramping upon any thicker parts of the board or receiving undue strain.
In operating the machine the board is passed through between the feed-rolls R R, which are driven by the usual trains of expansion-gears meshing into the gearsgg, attached to the upper feed-roll, and the scraper E removes the gum, chips, splinters, and other similar substances from the surface of the board before it reaches the upper feed-roll R, as before described.
What I claim as new and of my invention 1.s--
1. The combination, in a planing-machine,
scraper E, formed of a plate or bar, placed on the feed-in side of said roll, and having its edge adapted to bear upon and scrape the surface of the board passing under said roll and remove chips, gum, 820., therefrom in advance thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a planing-machine, of the upper feed-roll R, mounted in vertically adjustable boxes, and the scraper E, formed of a plate or bar, hinged to said boxes, and having its edge adapted to bear upon and scrape the surface of the board passing under said roll in advance thereof and to remove face of the board, scrapes off or removes thereof the upper feed roll R and the yieldingchips, gum, 850., therefrom, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the feedroll It, mounted in vertically-adjustable boxes,- the 5 scraper E, formed ofa plate or bar,hinged and connected to said. boxes and moving up and down therewith, and one or more springs, a", substantially as described.
