To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK VESTER- BECK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a display box of the type commonly employed to hold and display cakes or crackers, one of the objects being the production of an improved sign plate holder for a display box scription.

Another object is to provide an improved fastening for holding a removable transparent panel utilized as a closure for a sight opening through which the contents of the box are exposed to view.

Figure I is a front view of a display box embodying the features of my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged vertical section showing the front portion of the box. Fig. III is an enlarged horizontal section taken on line III-III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the fastening for securing the transparent plate to the box. aIn the accompanying drawings: A designates the side walls of the box, B is the bottom, and C designates a cover which may be suitably secured to one of the walls of the box.

D designates the front wall of the box in which is a backwardly extending depression l for the reception of a sign plate E. The backwardly projecting marginal walls of the depression l are integral with the face portion of the front wall D and lead to a depression wall section 1EL that is preferably parallel with the face portion of the front wall, as shown in the drawings. The top marginal wall of the depression l is severed by a slit from the wall section la, providing an opening 2 through which the sign plate E may be introduced into the depression l. The slit just referred to is continued in the side marginal walls of the depression, preferably only to points at distances above the lower ends of the side walls, with the object in view of providing stops 6 on which side extensions 5 ofthe sign plate may rest, in order that the sign plate may be properly supported in the depression after it has been introduced thereinto through the opening 2. A further object in slitting the side marginal walls of the depression only to the degree mentioned is to provide for the said side marginal walls more perfectly holding the back wall section la in proper relation to the face portion of the front wall D instead of placing reliance for the support of said wall section on only the bottom marginal wall of the depression; it is evident, however, that the slits may be continued to the lower ends of the side marginal walls and dependence placed on the bottom marginal wall for the support of said back section.

A sign housing 3 secured to the front wall of t-he box at its rear side incloses the opening 2 and extends therefrom to a point near the upper edge of said wall. This housing forms a continuation of the inner wall la of the depression l and is preferably offset at et to prevent the upper edge of said wall 1aL offering obstruction that would interfere with the insertion of the sign plate E. The upper portion of the housing 3 is spaced away from the front wall of the box to provide a passageway through which the sign plate may be inserted into the depression 1.

7 designates ribs projecting from the front face of the sign plate E and adapted to frictionally engage the front wall of the box. These ribs 7 space the front face of the sign plate away from the front wall of the box and prevent the sign from being scratched while it is being inserted or removed. This feature is desirable because, in practice, the sign plates are very frequently removed to enable the box fronts to be polished without marring the sign.

The sign plate preferably has a notch 8 in its lower edge to facilitate its removal, this notch allowing the operators finger to engage the lower edge of the sign plate.

The front wall of the box is provided with a display opening 9 for the purpose of displaying the contents. This opening is closed by a transparent plate l0 slidably f1tted to a bottom support l1 and a top guard 12, the latter being secured to the rear side of the front wall D and provided with yieldable flanges which engage the plate 10. T0 remove the transparent plate 10, it is neces- Sary to first move it vertically to a point entirely above the support 11, and then tilt it to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. II. When in the latter position, the plate 10 may be Withdrawn troni the support 12.

The transparent plate is locked in position by a rockable fastening device 13, pivoted at 14 to the guard 12 and having a finger 15 adaptedto pass through an opening in the guard 12 and occupy a posit-ion directly above the plate 10. The fastening device also has a yieldable arm 1G provided with a detent 17, which lies in a notch 18 when the device is in service. The finger 15 normally prevents the plate 10 from lnov` ing vertically to the position shown in dotted lines Fig. II, but it may be moved to a point out of alinement with said plate by lifting the yieldable arm 16 to withdraw the detent 17 from the notch 1S, and thereafter rocking the device 13 so as to move the nger 15 laterally away from the plate 10.

I claim z- 1. A display box having a. depression in its front Wall, said depression being formed by inwardly extending marginal Walls, a back section integrally connected to the "lower marginal wall and separated a slight distance from the upper marginal Wall to provide for the introduction of a sign plate into said device, and a housing at the back ot' the front Wall inclosing the sign receiving opening.

A display box having a depression in its `front wall for the reception of a sign plate, the Walls of said depression being integrally connected to said front Wall, said front Wall being provided with an opening in the margin Walls of said depression, a sign housing secured to the rear side ot said front Wall extending to a point near the top of said front wall, and a sign plate arranged part-ly Wit-hin said housing and partly Within said depression.

3. A display box having a display opening, a transparent closure plate for said opening removably itted to the box, and a rockable device pivoted to the box and adapted to engage one of the edges of the plate so as to lock the latter to the box, said rock-able device having a yieldable detent engaging a iixed part of the box.

A display box having a display opening, a transparent closure plate, retaining members to which said plate is slidably itted, a pivoted locking device pivoted to the box for securing said plate to the retaining members, said locking device comprising a yieldable arm provided with a detent engaging a fixed partotl the box, and a stop linger for limiting the movement of said plate.
