To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL A. BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tosaw sets, and has for an object to provide an implement of this character which will be provided with means for conveniently and accurately setting the teeth of a saw.
The above mentioned and other objects are attained by the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as disclosed on the drawing, set forth in this specification, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, forming a portion of thisspecification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved saw set. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken through the saw set. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the use of the gage members. Fig. 5 is a detail diagrammatic view illustrating the use of the hammer.
My improved saw set embodies companion handles 1 and 2 between which an expansion spring 3 is interposed. The handle members are each formed with a circular head 1, each head being formed with a central passage 5 for the reception ofa pivot screw 6. The outer end of the handle member 2 is formed with a jaw 7 in which is formed a cavity 8 for the reception of a hammer 9. The inner end of the hammer is formed with a head 10 which is provided with an angularly disposed inner face 11. The outer end of the hammer is bent to form a lug 12 which is formed with a threaded aperture for receiving a correspondingly threaded set screw 13. This set screw is operatively mounted in the outer end of the jaw 7 and is adapted for operation to move the hammer in a longitudinal plane.
The handle member 1 is provided at its outer end with a jaw 14: in which is formed a cavity 15 for the reception of an anvil 16.
This anvil is operatively associated with the hammer and at the inner end the anvil is formed with an angularly disposed face 17 which is located immediately opposite the head 10 of the hammer.
Gage members 18 are mounted upon the screw 6 and are disposed outwardly of the heads 1 of the handle members. The gage members are identical in construction and each consists of a shank 19 whose outer end is formed with an arcuate head 20 which are arranged eccentrically of the pivot screw 6. The inner end of the shank is formed with a dog 21 whose extremity is adapted for locking engagement in one of the arcuate series of passages 22. By providing the gage members it will be readily appreciated that they may be operated so that their arcuate heads will span the spaces between the jaws 7 and 1 1 of the handle to limit the movement of the device onto the saw to be operated upon.
In operation, the gage members are operated to accommodate the size of the teeth to be operated upon and the jaws 7 and 14 are made to straddle the saw. The hammer 9 may be moved longitudinally in its recess so that its head 10 can be operatively associated with respect to the tooth to be 0perated upon, after which the handles may be grasped by the hand of the operator and moved towardeach other to force the hammer against the anvil as will be understood.
The implement herein described and shown is extremely simple in construction, may be placed upon the market at a relatively low cost and will be found effective in accurately setting the teeth of a saw.
I claim A saw set comprising a pair of pivotally connected handles, each handle being provided with a jaw, the said jaws being arranged directly opposite each other and the said jaws being provided with cooperating setting means, adjustable gage members pivotally mounted on the pivot of the jaws and provided with head members which are adjustable across the space between the jaws, the said head members having outer arcuate surfaces which are arranged eccentrically of the pivot of the members, one of the handles being provided on each side with a series of recesses, the said gage members In testimony whereof I aflix my signature having inwardly extending Iportions and in presence of two Witnesses. lockin elements formed on t e extremities of the said inwardly extending portions and MICHAEL BEARD 5 interchangeably engaged in the said recesses WVitnesses:
