THOMAS SOFRIN, OF BERNARDSVIILE, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY- RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed September 21, 1910. Serial No. 583,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SoFRIN, an intended citizen of the United States, re siding at Bernardsville, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in razors, and more particularly to the class generally known as safety razors.
The object of this invention is to provide a razor, comprising a handle, provided with novel means for locking the guard plate, blade and retaining plate thereto.
A further object is the production of a razor of the class described, which will be simple in construction, comprising but few parts, which can be manufactured so cheaply that the device as a whole can be sold at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of peculiarly formed parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side View of a safety razor embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a-a of Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are perspective views of the guard plate, blade and retaining plate. Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken through the lower portion of the safety razor.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved safety razor, comprising a handle 2, provided at its lower terminal with a centrally located threaded opening 3, for the reception of a pin 4, extending upward from the middle portion of a guard plate 5, provided with the customary serrated edges, the opposite corners of which are formed with apertured lugs 6, for the reception of clamping screws 7, extending through the apertured lugs 8 formed upon opposite corners of a retaining plate 9.
A suitable blade 10, of substantially rectangular formation, is interposed between the guard plate 5 and the retaining plate 9 and securely clamped therebetween by the screws 7. Registering notches-11 are formed in the ends of the guard plate 5, the blade 10 and the retaining plate 9, and are ongaged by the lower ends of spring catches 12, the points of which fit into the recesses 13 formed upon the under face of the retaining plate 9. The upper terminals of these catches 12 are pivoted between pairs of cars 13 formed upon the opposite sides of a collar 14, which is slidable along the handle 2.
Recesses 15 are located in the sides of the handle 2, and contain outwardly pressed pairs of spaced spring locking pawls 16, adapted to engage the upper and lower edges of the collar 14 and hold the same when it is slipped between the upper and lower pawls comprising the jaws at a suit-- able distance from the lower end of the handle 2.
The device is assembled as follows: The threaded pin 4 is screwed into the opening 3 until the guard plate 5 engages the lower end of the handle 2. The retaining plate 9 is then loosely screwed to the guard plate 5 by means of the screws 7, after which the blade 10 is interposed between these plates and securely clamped. The collar 14 is next slipped downward along the handle 2 until the free ends of the spring catches 12 engage the notches 11 formed in the several plates and the recesses 13 located in the lower face of the plate 9, after which this said collar is raised until it slips be tween the pawls 16, in which position it will be located.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be manifest that a safety razor is produced which can be manufactured cheaply and fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination in a safety razor of a recessed handle, a guard plate carried by this handle, a retaining plate secured to the guard plate, a blade interposed between the guard plate and the retaining plate, a collar slidable upon the handle, catches pivoted upon the collar for engagement withwith the retaining plate substantially as the retaining plate whereby said retainand for the purposes hereinbefore described. 10 ing plate will be held securely to the guard In testimony whereof I afiix my signature plate, pawls located in the recesses formed in presence of two witnesses.
