LIONEL D. SAXTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. 7
- SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1911.
Application filed October 28, 1910. Serial No. 589,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIONEL D. SAXTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety razors and its object is to provide for the use of a blade with a single cutting edge and no side notches, said blade to be held in place by spring pressure exerted from within the handle as will be more fully described in the following specification set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the improved razor. Fig. 2 is a similar view show ing the parts detached and from their lower sides. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
The razor comprises a hollow handle 5, of any desired outside design and having at its upper end a cross arm 6 rigidly secured thereto and with notches 7 at either end.
Into the hollow handle is fitted a stem 8 having at its outer end the guard plate 9 which holds the blade 10 in place against the cap plate 1 1. This style of razor ordi' narily is provided with a blade having notches at its ends, but the present invention is adapted to receive and carry a blade such as is shown in Fig. 2. The upper surface of the plate 9 is perfectly flat and plain, but it may be slightly inclined toward the guard teeth 13. The plate 9 has notches 18, at its opposite ends to permit the plate to be placed in position on the blade 10 after the latter has been positioned on the cap plate 11 the lugs 15 passing through the notches in plate 9. \Vhen the blade is positioned on the cap plate 14, it is held by the guard plate 9, which has on its ends opposite to the guard teeth 13, projecting shoulders 11 which fit into the recesses 12 in the cap plate 1 1 to hold the guard plate in position. The cap plate has at either end depending lugs 15, turned inwardly toward themselves to receive the outer ends of the cross arm 6, the notches fitting about the lugs so that the cross arm will not turn without pressure upon the handle 5. The cap plate 14: is also provided with a flange, and shoulders 17 which hold the blade in the proper relative position between the guard plate 9 and the cap plate 14:. WVhen the cross arm has been pressed down against the guard plate 9, the ends are swung around under the lugs, the pressure is released and the spring in the handle 5 causes the notches 7 to engage the lugs 15. The blade is then firmly held between the two plates and the razor is ready for use.
I have secured in my invention a simply constructed device of few parts, which can be easily and quickly taken apart and put together again when a blade is to be removed or inserted. This is an important feature in view of the fact that safety razor blades are ordinarily stropped a number of times before they need to be honed.
It is obvious that the details of this razor may be otherwise arranged and modified without departing from the essential features above described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a safety razor the combination of the following elements; a cap plate having depending sides with inwardly projecting ends, means adapted to position the blade comprising a flange on one edge of the cap plate and shoulders on the ends of the opposite edge of the cap plate and recesses adapted to engage with shoulders on the guard plate; a blade sharpened on one edge; a notched guard plate having guard teeth on one edge and projecting shoulders adapted to engage with the said recesses in the cap plate and a handle with locking means comprising a cross arm with notched ends adapted to engage with the inwardly projecting ends of the depending sides of the cap plate and rigidly confine the blade between the cap plate and the guard plate.
2. In a safety razor, the combination of the following elements; a cap plate having dependin sides with inwardly projecting ends, bla e positioning shoulders and flange and recesses adapted to engage with shoulders on the guard plate; a blade sharpened on one edge; a notched guard plate with a stem and with guard teeth on one edge and having projecting shoulders adapted to engage with the said recesses in the cap plate;
a hollow handle with a cross arm having In witness whereof, I have hereunto set notched ends adapted to engage with the my hand this 17th day of October, 1910. inwardly projecting ends of the depending sides of the cap plate and a spring within LIONEL SAXTON' the handle adapted to hold the ends of the Witnesses:
cross arm in engagement with the ends of JULIUS W. MANNEBAOH,
the sides of the cap plate. ANTHONY F. AROOME.
