SPUTUlVI-CUP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN GREENWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macksville, in the county of Stafford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sputum-Cups; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in sputum cups for the use of invalids.

The object of the invention is to provide a sanitary sputum cup of simple and practical construction having an improved handle and cover hinged and adapted to receive removable linings which may be replaced from'time to time to dispense with the necessity of washing the cup.

Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cup; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover of the cup open; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal view of the same with the cover closed; Fig. I is a perspective view of one of the removable linings for the cup.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes the cup which may be of any suitable size and shape and constructed of any suitable material. The cup is here shown as being constructed of sheet metal and as of flat substantially rectangular or oblong shape, having rounded corners.

On one end of the cup is secured a handle 2 constructed from a strip of metal bent into the form of a circular loop and riveted or otherwise secured to the cup. One end of the loop forming the handle is extended up and bent or folded back upon itself to form one member 3 of a hinge connection for the cover 4 by means of which the cup is closed when not in use. The cover 4 is preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

in the form of a sheet metal plate corresponding in shape to the shape of the box. The metal at one end of the box is cut to form lugs or projections, two of which are bent to form hinge members 5 adapted to engage the ends of the stationary hinge member 3 with which and said members 5 is en gaged the pivot rod or pin of the hinge. The lug or projection on the end of the hinge between the hinge members 5 extends upwardly and rearwardly to form a thumb lever 6 whereby the cover may be readily opened. The end of the lug is bent upon itself to form a bead or finish.

Adapted to be removably engaged with the cup is a lining 7 formed of paper or other inexpensive material which after use may be thrown out of the cup thus dispensing with the necessity of washing the lat ter. In practice a suitable number of paper linings 7 will be supplied with each cup and may be readily engaged therewith to take the place of the ones removed.

A sputum cup constructed in accordance with my invent-ion will be convenient and sanitary in use and is especially adapted for the use of invalids in sanitariums, hospitals and the like.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
