Description

W. H. STARK.
MAIL BOX ATTACHMENT.- APPLICATION FILED APRJS. 1910.
I Quirk "wow Q Patented June 6, 1911.
WILLIAM H. STARK, OF HIGBEE, MISSOURI.
- MAIL-BOX ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. STARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Higbee, in the count-y of Randolph, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Box Attach ments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to coin delivering attachments for rural mail boxes.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a coin delivering attachment for application to the interior of a rural mail box and adapted to be operated by the movement of the hand of the carrier to deliver therein coins previously deposited upon a portion of the attachment.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment; Fig. 2, a top plan view; Fig. 3, a front view; and, Fig. 4, a partial section on r the line t4: of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings the attachment is shown as comprising a base 10 adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of a mail box. Rising from and secured to the base 10 are corresponding side members 11 and 12 having reduced central portions 13 and 14 respectively and forwardly extending upper portions 15 and 16 respectively. Secured to the inner face of the side member 11, at the top thereof are the horizontal guide rails 17 and 18, while corresponding guide rails 19 and 20 are secured to the inner face of the side member 12. Disposed between the side members 11 and 12 and mounted for a sliding movement in said guide rails is a plate 21, the rear end Specification of Letters I'atent.

of which is connected as at 22 with the up per end of a member 23, said member being disposed between the side members 11 and 12 and having its lower end pivoted to the base 10. A coil spring 24: has one end secured to the member 23 and the other end to the base 10 and constantly tends to move and hold the member 23 and the plate 21 in the position shown in the drawings. A stripper bar 25 is disposed transversely of the side members 11 and 12 and has its respective ends disposed upon and secured to the upper edge of said side members, the lower edge of said stripper bar is disposed in close proximity to the upper face of the plate 21 for a purpose that will presently become apparent.
Assuming that coins have been previously deposited upon the upper face of the plate 21, when same is in its normal position, it will be apparent that should the carrier insert his hand into the mail box, palm up, with the tips of his fingers in engagement with the member 23, the free end of the member will be moved rearwardly with respect to the side members 11 and 12, which will in turn slide the plate 21 to the rear. However, as the coins deposited upon the upper face of said plate cannot pass the stripper bar 25 they will be engaged by the latter and swept into the hand of the carrier.
A clip 26 is secured to the base 10 and is designed to hold letters inserted between the side member 12 and the clip in an upright position to enable their easy collection by the carrier.
What is claimed is:
A coin delivering attachment comprising a frame including spaced parallel side members having their front faces provided with corresponding inwardly extending recesses respectively, a plate slidably mounted between said side members above said recesses, a second plate disposed transversely of the frame between said side members and having its lower end pivoted to the base of said frame and its free end cooperatively connected with the first named plate at the rear end of the latter, means normally tending to hold the free end of said second named plate forward of the innermost limits of the recesses in the side members, and a stripper bar connecting said side members and overlying said first named plate in position to sweep said plate when the latter is moved Witnesses:
under the influence of the movement of the i J. T. RANDOLPH, pivoted plate from its normal position. E. E. NEWMAN.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of tWo wltnesses.
WILLIAM H. STARK.
