MORRIS ROSENWASSEBI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1911.
Application filed April 6, 1909. Serial No. 488,251.
lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Momus RosnNwAssnR, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specificatio This invention relates to garments, and more particularly to leggings.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide means whereby the application of the legging is facilitated and its fit about the leg improved while at the same time the desired neatness of appearance is secured.
Another object is to provide a legging in which the main fastening is by means of a lace, but of such location that the fastening is hidden; while at the same time providing other outside fastening means, whereby I secure a laced legging which has all the appearance of a puttee.
To these and other ends, in part obvious and in part specifically adverted to, the invention provides a concealed means for securing the overlapping flaps of the legging together, in combination with other visible means for holding the flaps in desired relation to each other and to the leg of the wearer.
The invention further provides a concealed fastening means for the flaps, operative throughout their vertical extent, and adjustable, sothat the amount of overlap may be regulated as desired, while the fastenings, when the legging is secured in position, remain concealed.
More specifically, the invention provides a concealed lace fastening operative between the outer surface of one flap and the inner surface of the other flap, the lace at all times connecting the lower ends of the flaps, so that the legging is in a measure readyshaped, and easily manipulated in putting it on, in combination with a second continuous visible fastening, attached to the lower end of one flap, encircling the legging, and secured at the upper end of the other flap.
The elements, combinations, and arrangements of parts characteristic of the invention will be hereinafter fully described, and
. succinctly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a legging including my invention, as applied, indicating in dotted lines the concealed fas-, tening; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the outer flap broken away to reveal the lace fastening; and Fig. 3 is a detail" showing the manner of insuring proper relativity between the legging and the encircling strap.
Referrin now more specifically to the drawings, my invention is shown applied to a puttee legging indicated at 1, which in its general features is of any usual or preferred construction. The legging is adapted to be placed about the leg, the free vertical edges 2 and 3 coming at the side portion of the legging, and preferably lapping, one upon the other, as shown. For securing the legging in proper relation to the foot I provide a stirrup 4, of ordinary construction, and arranged as usual. The concealed lace means for securing the flaps together, and whose provision constitutes one of the characteristics of my improved legging, will now be described. It will be understood that the embodiment of this feature shown and described is merely illustrative, and at present considered a preferred form. Proceeding accordingly, -10 indicates a lace, secured at one end preferably to the inside flap 2, as by means of a knot in the lace engaging an eyelet 11 in the flap. 12 indicates a sepa rate longitudinally extending lace' flap, which may be secured at top and bottom and at one longitudinal edge well inside the edge of main flap 3. Lace flap 12 is provided with a series of lacing eyelets 1 1, and, in the embodiment illustrated, I show a single lace 10, which is passed through each of eyelets 14, preferably in the manner shown, so that individual loops 15 extend on both sides of the lace flap and beyond the edge thereof. It will be seen that by regulating the free end of the lace the distance to which loops 15 extend from the edge of the lace flap may be adjusted. Upon the opposed outer surface of the inner flap 2 I provide a series of lacing studs 16, so located that in the closed relation of the parts the studs occur vertically between adj acent ones of the eyelets.
Obviously, when the foot has been inserted in the stirrup 4, the flaps 2 and 3 may be progressively secured together from one end to the other, by simply hooking the loops 15 over appropriate studs 16. The advantage of this construction will be apparent. Where the legging is to be worn over trousers, especially the bell sort worn by sailors, which must be folded about the leg before the legging is put on, difficulty is experienced With the ordinary legging fastening, because the folded trouser must be held about the leg with one hand and the fastening applied with the other. Consequently, where the fastening of the legging is not progressive, or, where it is on the outside of the flaps, there is likelihood that as the hand is removed from the folded trouser, and before the fastening can be applied, the trouser leg will slip from its smoothly folded condition and bunch up about the leg. Whereas, by the use of my progressive fastening at the inside of the legging, the lower end of the trouser leg is held in its desired position before the part thereof next above is released by the hand, and so on. The result is a snug fit. Furthermore, the fastening means and the disposition thereof are such that the fastening is concealed, while at the same time it does not directly bear upon the leg. It is preferred that at the upper end of main flap and of lace flap 12 there shall be opposed eyelets, so that the lace may be passed therethrough to effect a semi-permanent fastening at the upper ends of the flaps.
To supplement the fastening means already described, and to give the article the appearance of the ordinary puttee legging, I provide a strap 18, fastened at the upper and lower portions of the legging, passing spirally about the same, and maintained in proper position by means of guide-loops 19, and a stud 20 engaging one of a series of apertures 21 in the strap. Said strap 18 is secured at one end to the outer flap at the lower end thereof, while the other end of the strap is adapted to be connected to the upper end of the inner flap as by means of buckle 22. r
The single continuous lace, freely sliding throughout the length of the lace flap, insures great flexibility, because any one of the loops is laterally extensible, as the flexing of the leg may require.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be taken as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that materials, sizes, and relativities of parts are unimportant, except as they are called for in the following claims, which define the scope of invention contemplated.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A legging adapted to be placed about the leg and having overlapping flaps, a sep: arate flap on the inside of the outer flap, longitudinally coextensive therewith but havin its free edge appreciably short of the e ge of said outer flap, a lace secured at the lower end of said separate flap and extending longitudinally thereof, there being lacing eyes longitudinally disposed in said separate flap for the passage of the lace and lacing studs disposed longitudinally upon the outside of the other main flap between the overlapping portions of the main flaps, and a winding strap secured at the lower end of the outer flap, passing around the legging, and adjustably secured to the upper end of the inner flap.
2. A legging adapted to be placed about the leg and having overlapping flaps, a separate flap on the inside of one of the flaps longitudinally coextensive therewith but having its free edge appreciably short of the edge of said flap, complementary lace engaging means longitudinally disposed upon said separate flap and the other main flap, a lace adapted to engage said lace engaging means, said lace being secured at the lower end of one flap, and being securable at the upper end of one flap, said lace engaging means being entirely between the main flaps, and a winding strap secured at the lower end of the outer main flap, passing around the legging, and adjust-ably secured to the upper end of the inner flap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
