To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, HERMAN H. KarreniimNnIoii, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing- Boxes, of which the following yis a specification.

rlChis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sewing boxes, and more particularly to sewing boxes adapted to be attached to a sewing machine, the object being to provide a sewing box which is so constructed that the same can be drawn outwardly from the table of the sewing machine into such a position that the contents of the box can be readily reached by the operator of the machine.

Another object of my invention is to provide a sewing box which is formed of a top and bottom of the same shape, each forming a receptacle for holding a number of spools of cotton and the necessary utensils.

A further object of my invention is to provide the box with a designating plate in conjunction with guide eyes through which the strands of cotton are adapted to pass from the spools, said strands passing under a tension bar so as to hold the same from unwinding whereby the operator can easily and quickly draw out the size of cotton desired.

Another object of my invention is to provide means for breaking oft' the thread after the desired amount has been drawn off of the spool whereby the end of the thread will be in such a condition after being broken off that the needle can be readily threaded, thereby overcoming the disadvantages now existing with devices which cut the thread.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a sewing box which is provided with means for holding scissors, and thimbles together with a pin cushion and a tape holder whereby all of the instruments necessary in sewing will be within easy reach of the person operating the machine.

With these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In carrying out my improved invention, l employ a rectangularly shaped box which is cut obliquely to form a top and bottom member A and B, each member forming a receptacle for holding articles as will be hereinafter fully described and the sections are connected together by hinges A and a hook B. member B are a pair of transverse guide bars D slidably mounted under guide flanges E of a frame E which is provided with guide ilanges E2 over which t guide bars F mounted on the table G of the sewing machine, and it will be seen that by this arrangement the box can be drawn outwardly to such a position that the same can be reached by the operator of the machine without stooping over. For drawing the same outwardly, l provide the bottom B with a handle G -which can be readily grasped so as to slide the box upon the guide frame E and after the box has moved upon the frame as far as possible and a continuous pull is exerted upon the box, the frame will slide upon the table.

For holding the top member of the box in position and to relieve the hinges when the box is open, l provide the top with eyes H in which are loosely mounted the ends of a substantially triangular shaped handle H which forms a brace for the top member when the box is thrown over by coming into engagement with the frame E. The bottom and top of the box are substantially the same shape and arranged in the bottom of each of the sections of the box are a plurality of posts I provided with spring ends I over which are adapted to be placed spools of cotton and these posts are each provided with a numeral designating the number of cotton to be placed thereon so that the spools of cotton will be kept straight when placed upon the posts. In connection with the posts for holding the spools7 l provide each of the sections with a block J having a covering of any suitable cloth or the like and on each of the blocks is mounted a designating plate K which is also provided with Secured to the bottom of the numerals corresponding to the numerals of the respective posts and opposite each of the numerals of the designating bar, I provide a guide eye L through which the respective strands of cotton from the spools are` adapted to pass and it will be seen thatl by this arrangement a person will be able to quickly find the size of cotton desired to be used.

For holding` the ends of the strands of cotton, I provide each of the blocks J with a tension frame M which is pivotally mounted at M and one of its longitudinal bars extends alongside of the series of eyes and forces the thread down on the covering of the block so as to hold the ends of the threads in such a position that they can be readily grasped by the fingers and for locking the bar in this position, I provide a. turn button lV 2 which engages the frame and holds the same against the covering of the block. It will be seen that by this arrangement the frame can be readily raised so as to allow the strands of cotton to pass through the eyes.

F or breaking the threads after the desired amount has been drawn off of the spools, I provide each of the blocks J with a series of vertical spring bars N which are held against the side of the block by the frame M and t-hese bars which are substantially rectangular in cross section form means .for breaking' the strands of cotton so that a ragged end will be left in order that t-he needle' of the machine can be readily threaded. By simply twisting the thread around one of these bars and giving the same a slight jerk it will be broken oft'.

Arranged in the bottom A adjacent one end and the back are spring clips or holders O forming means for supporting scissors as clearly shown and the bottom is also pro` vided with a series of thimble holders P which are preferably formed of a central post having a sleeve or cork or any other suitable flexible material arranged around the same so as to allow the same to yield when a thimble is forced over the sleeve in order that it will be firmly held in position.

The top section is provided with a pin cushion holder Q in which is arranged a pin cushion Q and extending through the end of the top adjacent the pin cushion holder is a crank shaft R on which is mounted a` tape measure S which is engaged by a spring member S so that the same will be held in its adjusted position so that all danger of the same coming unwound after being wound up by the crank is prevented.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a sewing box which is provided with means for holding a number of spools of cotton in such a position that the cotton can be readily unwound therefrom and I also provide means for holding the ends of the strands of cotton in such a position that they can be readily grasped by the fingers when it is desired to draw off a strand.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. The combinat-ion with a sewing box provided with a plurality of spool holders, of a block arranged in said box having a cloth covering, a designating` bar arranged on the face of said block, a plurality of eyes mounted in said block adjacent said designating bar for receiving the ends of the threads from the respective spool holders, breaking bars arranged adjacent the said block, a tension frame for engaging said breaking bars and the ends of the threads, and means for holding said frame against the face of said block.

2. In a sewing box, the combination with a plurality of spring spool holders, each being provided with a designating numeral, of a block provided with a cloth covering, a designating bar arranged on said block corresponding to the spool holders, guide eyes mounted in said block adjacent said bar for receiving the ends of the strands of cotton, spring breaking bars arranged adjacent said block, a pivoted tension frame for engaging said spring breaking bars and the strands of thread, and means for holding said tension frame in position on said block.

3. A sewing box comprising' two sections arranged together, each section being provided with a plurality of spool holders, a block arranged within each section having a cloth covering, and provided with a designating bar, guide eyes mounted in said block opposite the numerals of said bars, adapted to receive the ends of the strands from the spools, spring breaking bars arranged adjacent said block, and a pivoted tension frame pivotally mounted in said box co-acting with the breaking bars, said tension frame comprising an oblong frame having an off set side portion, and means for locking said tension bar in position on said block over said breaking bars.
