Description

tinted gnant gaat eine.
Letters Patent No. 99,396, dated February 1, V1.870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
The Schedule referred to `in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, TIMOTHY O. BRIDE, of Quincy, in the county of Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Self-Acting Hydrants; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
' Figure 1, of the drawings, is a representation of a vertical central section of my invention.
1 My invention relates to hydrants, and consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, whereby a hydrant is made self-acting, and the freeza smaller cylinder, D, into which the water is admitted by the pipe e.-
Fianges are cast on the bottom of this cylinder, whereby it is fastened to the floor of the outer casing A, by screws x x.
Screwed into the neck of the cylinder D is a brass box, F. Its cover c is screwed fon.
The valve-stemt passes down through an opening in the centre of the cover c'.
g is a coiled spring attached to the valve-stein b', and serving to keep-the valve b firmly pressed against its seat n, in the bottom of the box F.
Fasteued to the lower plate of the plunger O is a coiled spring, m, which serves to raise the plunger, when pressure is removed from the handle d of the hydrant, thus allowing the coiled spring gto raise the valve b, and force it against its seat, thereby cutting oi the ow of water.
Kater is conducted bythe pipe cinto the lower cylinder D. Pressure being applied to the handle d of ythe hydrant, the plunger() is depressed, and the valve b opened. The water now flows from the cylinder D into the box F, whence it flows through the four openings h h into the cylinder B, and thence through the exit-pipe le.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
The automatic hydrantherein described, having cyl` inder B, plunger C, withV coiled spring m, cylinder D, and box F, with valve b, and spring g.
In testimony that I claim the above, `I"have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presenceiof two witnesses.
Witnesses: TIMOTHY C. BRIDE.
