Description

.LINTON WHARTON. OF RICHLAND,IOWA.
Letters Patent ilv'o. 99,383, dated'Febo'uary 1, 1870.
IMPRO'VED WASHINGHMACHINE.
. The Schedulerefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it may concern .Be it knowntthat I, LINTON WHARTON, of Rich- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved n washing-machine, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sect-ion ofthe same.
Similar letters oi'sreference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a rectangular case or tub, and B, a groovcd wash-board placed in the same, near the bottom, with the gnooved face "up, and with the grooves traversing from side to side. Y
O is a similarly-grooved board, placed on the other, with the groovesdoywn, and with a post, D, rising up from near each end; also with another, E, between them.
F is a strap, detachably connected by a hook with one post, D, and extending to the arm of a vibrator, F', beyond one end of the case, and supported on a transverse shaft, G, arranged in supports H, projecting from the case. i
I is another strap, connected to the other post D, and passing over pulley K, at the opposite end of the case, and back under the latter to the other end of the vibrator, to which it is suitably attached.
-This vibrator is provided with a hand-lever, L, for
Working it, or it may be worked by a crank-shaft and connecting-rod.
The clothes to be Washed are placed between the boards, and the washing is elected in a very simple and eflicient manner by working the upper board back and forth.
The pressure on the clothes may be varied by connecting the straps F and I higher or lower on the posts D, for which provision ismade by making a number of holes in them.
, -If the straps are connected near the top, they draw downward on the posts. To cause the strap F to do this in a greater degree than it otherwise would, it is caused to pass under a guide-roller, M, at the 'end of the case.
Weights N may be placed on the back of' the board C, also, to increase the pressure, and they may be confined by having holes to slip over the post E.
The case or tub may have a cover attached in any suitable way, to close over the top, except the space required by the posts to pass up above it.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the box or case A, fixed board B, reciprocating board O, straps I and F, posts I), and vibrator, all substantially as specified.
2. The straps F and I, the latter passing under the box A, in combination with the vibrator F, and with the vertical posts D, when the latter are provided with holes for adjustment of the strap-hooks, vall arranged and operating as and for the purpose set LINTON \VHARTON.
f forth.
