To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAUDE W. Knnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to devices for displaying goods, and is more particularly concerned with a form of tray in which candies and the like may be arranged for ready inspection of the customer; and in which the goods may be arranged in fanciful tractive designs if desired.

The form of display tray forming the subject-matter of this invention is particularly designed to be located at the front of a display counter comprising a plurality of compartments or stalls in which the goods such as candies of different kinds, may be distributed. While it is Within the scope of my invention that the display tray may extend for the full length of the counter and overlie a plurality of such compartments, I prefer to construct each tray of a size to fit within a single compartment or stall of a display counter, for the purpose of indicating and displaying only the kind of goods contained in such compartment.

My invention furthermore contemplates improved means of supporting said trays upon the counter and within the compartments.

With these objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of so much of a display counter as is necessary to illustrate my invention in conjunction therewith. Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the trays, the transparent cover thereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate the interior construction. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the lower end of the tray. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a supporting bracket for the tray. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of said bracket. Fig. 7 is a detail view of an adjusting device at the upper end of said bracket by which the tray may be adand atjusted to the proper angle of inclination upon the counter.

The embodiment of my invention herein selected for illustration is particularly adapted for use in display counters of the kind illustrated in my Patent No. 953,911, dated April 5th, 1910, but it is to be understood that the tray is also adapted for use with display counters of different construction.

Referring to Fig. 1, 1 indicates an end view of a portion of a display counter having preferably a top plate 2 of non-porous material such as glass or the like, upon which top plate are supported by means of suitable clips 3 a plurality of partitions 4, likewise of non-porous material and preferably of glass. Overlying the forward inclined edges 5 of the partitions 4 is a plate 6 of transparent material such as glass, which may extend throughout the full length of the counter, if desired, and which is held in place by suitable clips (3 and 6 It is to be understood that .the partitions 4 divide the counter transversely into stalls or compartments containing goods such as candies of different varieties.

In order that the goods may be more readily inspected by a purchaser, I provide at the forward end of each compartment adjacent the front plate 6 a tray 7 preferably in the form of a shallow box, which may, if desired, be divided into two or more compartments by suitable partitions 8. The front of each tray is provided with a suitable glass cover 9, which may be held in place by the rabbeted edges 10 of the sides of the box or tray, and by suitable clips 11 at the bottom thereof. The upper edge of the tray or box is provided with a finger recess 12, whereby the glass front may be readily removed. An indicating card 13 may, if desired, be inserted between the glass cover 9 and the lower end of the tray, as shown in Fig. 3.

The lower end of the tray is preferably beveled, as at 14, in order that said tray may accommodate itself to the angle of inclination of the front plate 6 of the display counter, and restsnugly against said plate. To support the tray in position, I provide an improved form of bracket comprising the upright arm or arms 15 and the feet 16 adapted to rest upon the top plate 2 of the counter. Each of the bracket feet is provided with a hook 17, which fits within a socket 18 in the bottom 19 of the tray, the back plate of the tray being notched as at 20 to afford clearance for the feet 16. To hold the tray snugly against the front plate 6 of the counter, the upper end of the bracket 15 is provided with an adjusting member comprising a screw 21 threaded into the upper end of the bracket and provided with a disk 23 adapted to engage the rear vof the tray, as shown in Fig. 1, and a knurled head 24: by which the screw may be readily manipulated. The upper end of the bracket is preferably deflected at 25 to extend for a short distance parallel with the angle of inclination of the tray, so that the threaded bore for receiving the screw 21 may be tapped directly through the bracket at right angles to the upper end thereof.

While I have herein described a particular embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same may be varied in details and relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In a display device, the combination with a display counter having one or more compartments for the reception of goods, the partitions of said compartments having inclined forward edges, and a transparent front plate supported by the inclined forward edges of said partitions at a corresponding angle to the top of the counter, of a display tray for each of said compartments, each tray comprising a shallow box having a beveled lower end to fit the angle between the top of said counter and said front plate, a bracket for supporting said tray having legs extending beneath and .said tray to extend in an inclined position upon a support, a supporting bracket having an arm or arms extending beneath the lower end of said tray, and a vertical arm extending to a position adjacent the upper end of said tray, and adjusting means at the upper end of said vertical arm to adjust the angle of inclination of said tray.

3. A display tray comprising a shallow box having a beveled lower end to permit said tray to stand in an inclined position upon a support, said end being notched, a supporting bracket for said tray comprising horlzontal arms having means to interlock with the notches at the lower end of said tray, and having a vertical arm, or arms, extending to a position adjacent the upper end of said tray, and means at the upper end of said arm to adjust the angle of inclination of said tray. 7
