STAMP-AFFIXER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led October 14, 1909. Serial No. 522,547.
a simple and efficient device for use in aflixpostage stamps to mail matter, and for a Xing gummed strips to packages and 1n other relations.
In carrying out my invention I provide a frame or handle with means to support -a roll strip of postage stamps or a gummed strip, and a pad to be moistened carried by' said frame at a suitable distance from .said roll in position to enablethe stamps or strip to be drawn adjacent to1 the padwhile the strip is guided with respect to the pad asl the strip is drawn from the roll.
My invention comprises the novel details of improvement and combination of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the. claims'.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 isa plan view of a stamp aftixer, partly broken away, embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3
isa section on the line 3, 3, in Fig. 1; Fig. 4L is an underside View of the frame, the pad being removed; Fig. 5 is an underside 'view oi"l a modified form of the invention, and Fi 6 is a partly sectional side view thereof. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The frame or holder 1 is provided with a plate or the like 1, from which substantially parallel arms 1b extend a suitable disvtance and which are provided with` means for rotatively supporting a gummed roll of paper or the like 2, such as a roll of postage stamps. For this purpose arms lb are shown provided with opposed inwardly extending studs `or projections 1 adapted to enter the central bore 2l in roll 2 for pivotally supporting the latter. The arms 1 are made sufficiently pliable or resilient to enable them to spread apart to receive and release roll 2 while at the same time said arms are sutliciently rigid to properly support and retain said roll.
At 3 is a pad or the like which may be of felt or other suitable material adapted l Patente'd May 3o, 1911.
ably connected with'plate 1. As shown, the' v ydevice is of sufficient length to lenable they same to be grasped by the hand of the user between roll 2y and pad 3, and the pad is exposed at the outer end in such manner that the gummed strip may be drawn over and 'in contact with the pad to moisten the gum, or the pail 'may be moved across the article to which the'gummed strip or stamps are to be affixed to 1n isten the article at such place. The plat` 1 at its sides has upturned portions 4 spaced apart forming a channel through which strip 2 ma be pulled, and whereby said strip is guide with respect to pad 3. l
While in Figs. 1 to 4 I have shown the frame as made in a sin le piece of material suitably bent or'former in Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown the frame as made in several parts, wherein side members-1b are formed of wire, the pivotal parts 1 being suitably bent to shape, the wire being extended around at `the front part adjacent the pad at 1g, and plate 1a is' provided with ears 5, which are folded firmly around wires or rods 1b for retaining the blade in position. The opening 1 is shown formed between the adjacent end of plate 1 and the-cross` part 1 of the frame, and the. openings 1, 1t are shown formed in plate 1, whereby the pad 3 may be attached to the device as before described. The projections 4 are shown turned up from plate 1u at adistance apart to guide strip 2.
In using the device the roll of gummed material is attached to the pivotal supports 1 and drawn forwardly over the outer end of the pad, the device being grasped, by the hand and the thumb or finger pressed upon the strip to guide the same with respect to the pad. The thumb or finger may press upon the strip directly over the pad to cause the .moistened pad to dampen the gum on the strip, and as the stamps are aiiixed to the article the strip is pulled beneath the finger. Or, if desired, the exposed part of the pad may be used to moisten'the part of the article to which/'the stamps are t-o be affixed and' the stamps drawn forwardly from the roll v and pressed on such moistened surface.'
While I have referred to the use of the device for aiiixng postage stamps it Will be evident' that the device maybe used with va strip of gummed paper, cloth, or the like for aixingthe same to packages or in other desiired relations Where gummed strips are use My invention is not limited to the details of construction shovvnv and. described, as the said plate, said arlns at their outer ends ing provided with inwardly projecting dp# posed supports for a roll, vguides Iforthe' strip at the sides of said plate and apad secured on the underside of the plate and. passing over one end thereof.
2. A device of the character describedl comprising aplate having a pad. passed through openings in the plate, folded upon itself beneath theplate and exposed at onel side and over one end of .the p'late "andfn gldeS for a strip on the side of the' .plate opposite the pad. Y
