Lette/rs Patent No. 99,344, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEJENT IN LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
, them Figure 3 represents a section through the lock; and Figure 4 represents the key.
Similar letters of reference, where -they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts of the lock in all of the drawings.
This lock is represente l in the form of a drawerlock, and itrelates, mainly, to the construction and operation of the bolt-plate, eccentric, and spring or locking-pin, in relation to the lock-frame or ease, and incidentally to a cap and barrel, as a guide and guard to the insertion of the key.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, with reference to the drawings.
A represents the case of an ordinary drawer-lock, on which is placed a bolt-plate, B, having a bolt, a', and an opening, b, and a spring, c, all of which may be cut or stamped out of a piece of sheet-metal.
The opening b, in the bolt-plate, is of eccentric form, and the piece of metal stamped or cut out of 'said plate, to form said opening, may be made into the circular, through eccentrically-hung disk, O, that works in said opening to move the bolt in and out of 'the case, or to unlock and lock the drawer, or otherthing upon which the lock is used.
On the back or case of the lock there isaiiat spring, d, which carries in its free -end a pin or bolt, e, which passes through the case A, and into an opening, 1, in the disk C, and fastens said disk tothe lock-case, that is, prevents it from turning and moving the bolt.
In theperimeter of the disk C there is a depression', f, into which the point of the spring ctakes when they come together, so as to have a frictional union.l
The
disk C, as before stated, is circular, but is ccentrically hung on the key-pin 2, so that, in being moved around said pin, it moves the bolt-plate back and forth;
Over-the bolt-plate and disk, which being dat and thin occupy but little space in thickness,.is placed a cap-piece, D, with a slightly raised escutcheon, 3, stamped up, or otherwise formed upon it, so that the arm 4 of the key may turn underneath it, and between it and the disk O; and over the escutcheon Sisplaced a cap, E, which, together with cap-piece. D, are furnished with key-openings, the cap-piece having a keyopeningextending both ways from the key-piu.
The key F has upon ita projection, 5, which presses upon the bolt e when it is properly inserted in the lock, and reaches said bolt, and backing ont said bolt, occupies the bolt-hole 1, so that continuing to turn the key will also turn the disk O, and work the boit.
Inserting the key in the lock, it passes through the key-opening 6, in E, and through a corresponding keyopening in I). The key`is then turned halt` a rotation,
which brings its projection 5 over the bolt e, and'at a' point where said bolt is covered or concealed by the cap E, and then, by pressing the key still further in, its projection 5 backs out the bolt e, and itself occupiesthe hole 1, so that it can operate the disk C, and also the bolt, through said disk. All the parts of this lock may be Acut or stamped out of sheet-metal, and thus be made very cheap.
The spring-pin e can be dispensed with in this lock, and the spring c made to hold the eccentric at its locking and unlocking points, and the spring may be placed below instead of above thedisk.
' Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the case A, bolt-plate B, eccentric C, and raised cap D, when the eccentric is operated by a pin-key and friction-spring, and when the parallel-movement of' the bolt-plate is controlled by the cap, and the whole is arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth and described.
