APPARATUS FOR ASSEMBLING TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MCBIRNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Assembling Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprises a novel organization having a rotatable bed plate carrying a vertically swinging frame upon which latter a typewriter frame may be secured so that when the frame is swung to vertical position both the bottom side and top are accessible for convenience in assembling.

The device is also a useful one for exhibition of typewriting machines in connection with explanation of their details of construction.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus with the vertically swinging frame elevated: Fig. 2, a similar view with the vertically swinging frame lying horizontally upon the turn table: and Fig. 3, a detail perspective view showing a modification in a detail of construction.

Upon a base or support 1 is mounted a turn table or platform 2 turning about the axis 3 shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. Disposed upon the turn table and of substantially the same horizontal external dimensions is a rectangular skeleton frame 4. Intermediate its ends the skeleton frame has pinned to it at each side one end of a link whose other end is pivoted to the side of the turn table adjacent one end thereof. The end of the skeleton frame beyond the links is rounded as at 7 (Fig. 2) and shod with curved metal shoes 8 that run upon metal strips 9 applied to the turn table along its edges or instead of the curved metal shoes 8 rollers 10 may be employed as indicated in Fig. 3. On the inner face of each of the side bars of the skeleton frame are secured hooks 11, 11, and 12, 12, adapted to engage parts of the frame of a typewriting machine and hold it in position. appropriate device for securing the frame of a typewriter to the vertically swinging skeleton frame may be employed. They would vary, naturally with the character of the typewriter frame. If that edge of the vertically swinging frame adjacent the pivots 6 be lifted, the frame will swing upon its pivotal connections with the links 5 and its other end will slide or run along the face of the turn table until arrested by stops, such as pins 13 that may be secured in the face of the turn table. In this position, the inclination of the frame is such that the weight of the typewriting machine will by gravity hold the swinging frame in upright position the latter being supported by the links 5 that then act as strut braces. A typewriting frame so mounted is accessible both at the bottom and top as well as at the sides and is held in most convenient position for insertion and adjustment of its various parts all of which are freely exposed to view. vertically swinging frame there are applied to its edges guide plates 14 that embrace between them the sides of the turn table.

I claim:

1. The combination of a support, a turntable having pivotal connection at its middle portion therewith, a skeleton frame adapted to lie horizontally upon the turn-table, and a link pivotally connected with the turn-table near one end and with the skeleton frame between its opposite ends and which is adapted to lie substantially parallel with the turn-table-when the skeleton frame is lowered and which when raised holds said frame in a vertical position over the table support with one end resting on and supported by the table.
