TOOL-HOLDER.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Bnizssrnoir, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in r1"ool-1lolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tool-holders and has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient device of this character for holding edged tools in contact with a grind stone when sharpening the same.
i further object is to provide atool-holder, the construction of which is such that the operator may press the cutting edge of the tool against the grind stone with one hand and with the other hand rotate said stone to effeet the sharpening of the tool.

Vvlith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and the arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. B is a transverse section taken on vline ac-fc of Fig. 2.
The preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a frame 1 having bearings 2 mounted thereon, said bearings supporting a shaft 3 carrying a grind stone 3. An operating handle 4f is provided on the shaft 3, which handle is adapted to be grasped by the right hand of the operator. An ordinary water tank 5 is provided for the grind stone 3 in order that the latter may be constantly supplied with water. The frame 1 comprises transverse members 6 which have lateral extensions 0r projections 7, thumb-clamping screws 8 be ing provided in the uppermost of these eX- tensions. rllhus the frame carrying the grind stone may be detachably secured to a table, bench or the like. Then the frame is attached to a table 9 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the crank 4 may be easily turned by the Specification of Letters Patent.

right hand of the operator, it being necessary to manipulate vthe tool-holder with the left hand as will be hereinafter described.
The tool-holder comprises a transverse member 10 which is detachably and adjustably secured to the frame 1 by means of bolts 11 and thumb nuts 11 therefor, longitudinal slots 12 being provided in order that said bolts may be longitudinally adjusted. Extending upwardly from the central portion of the transverse member 10 is an upright inverted U-shaped member 13, formed from a metallic strip the ends of which are secured together by a rivet 141. rIhe member 13 is secured to the transverse member 10 by means of a detachable bolt 15 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. ln order that the member 13 may be moved to a position on the member 10 nearer the grind stone 3 than that shown in the drawings, a supplementary bolt-hole 16 is provided in said member, said bolt-hole being adapted to receive the bolts 15. rThe front portion of the member 13 is provided with a series of perforations 17 which are designed to receive a reduced extremity 18 of the handle extension 19. 1t is apparent that the angle of the cutting edge of the tool may be varied to suit the operator by using any one of the perforations 17.
The forward end 2O of the handle extension 19 is enlarged and is provided with a tool-receiving recess 21. The tool 22 is interposed between the recess 21 and the rear extremity 23 of the handle as clearly indicated in F ig. 1. rEhe tool 22 is held securely in position by means of a thumb screw 21 which engages the top face of the tool.. Screws 25 are provided for securing the rear extremity of the operating handle 26 to the enlarged portion 20 of the handle extension 19. The forward end of the handle 26 is curved downwardly as shown in Fig. 1 in order that the operator may readily control the same in grinding the tool. If it is desired to make the angle of the cutting edge of the tool 22 more acute, the extremity 18 is engaged with a perforation 17 near the top of the member 13 and if it is a tool having considerable length the member 10 is secured to the rear of the frame 1.
A grind stone and tool-holder of the construction set forth is convenient in Ause and eflicient in operation.
While I have shown what deem to be the preferable form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the arrangements of parts and details of construction Without departing from the spirit of my in vention and hence I desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as are comprehended within the scope ofthe appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a frame; a standard formed of a metallic strip bent into substantially uniformed U-shape with its end bent to overlap and riveted together, the forward limb of said member being' arranged substantially vertical and perforated; an operating handle; an extension secured to said handle and adapted to be inserted in any of the perforations of said standard; and a tool clamp pro- Vided on said handle, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described, coinprising a frame; a standard formed of a metallic strip bent into substantially uniformed U-shape with its ends bent to overlap and riveted together, the forward limb of said member being arranged substantially vertical and perforated; a member adjustably mounted on said frame and to which said standard is secured; an operating handle; an extension secured to said handle and adapted to engage one of the perforations of said standard; and a tool clamp provided on said handle, substantially as described.

In a device of the class described, a frame; a transverse member adjacent and adjustably secured -to said frame; a standard formed of a metallic strip bent into substantially uniformed U-shape with its ends bent to overlap and riveted together, the forward end of said member being arranged substantially vertical and perforated, said standard being secured to said transverse member; an operating handle and an extension therefor bolted thereto, said extension having a reduced rear extremity adapted to engage in any of the perforations of said vertical limb and to clamping means in said operating handle, substantially as described.
