Description

JAcoB LEVY., onN-EW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 99,330, dated Februa/ry 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS FOR DOORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, JACOB LEVY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improved Safety- Lock for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination of a sliding door-bolt, provided with a light spring to draw it home, or -keep it locked, and a strong spring to Withdraw it, and provided with stop-pins on its ends to hook or secure said strong spring in a stretched condition on the door, in such a manner, that by means of a small and nearly n'nobservable perforation in' the door, the stop-pin ou the end of said strong spring, connected with the bolt, can be released from the door, whereupon the said light spring contracts' and withf draws the bolt, permitting the door to be locked, without applicationof a key-hole or key, and permittingr to unlock the saine with facility.
In the drawingsliigure l`repiesentsafront elevation of a door, with my improved lock, from its inside, and the door shown locked.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
A represents the door-frame, and B, the door, which are made in the usual way.
D is the staple fixed' to the door-frarne, in which the sliding door-bolt D passes, when locked.
E E represent thevusnal guides, in which the bolt slides, and F, the guide-plate, by means of which the bolt and its guides are secured to the door.
G is the usual handle of the bolt, to which I attach a light spring, H', connecting it with the iin-ward guide E, so that the said spring tends to drawthe bolt home in its staple C.
Now, in order to unlock the holt from the outside ofthe door, I employ a strong spiral spring, I, to draw rearward on the bolt, and provide both 'of its ends with stop-pins J and K, of which I connect the pin K by means of a cord or chain, L, with the handle G, and employ one or more pulleys M M on the door-face, to guide said cord L; and at the proper distance from the handle G to the pin K, I make a small perforation, N, through the door, so that when the bolt is brought home, and the pin K inserted in the perforation N, and the cord L placed overl the pulley M, the
slack of the cord L is taken up by the spring H.
On the handle G, I attach a short wire or chain, O
and have on its loose' end a similar pin, Igito those (J and K) on the cord L and spring I, which pin I insert in a perforation, Q, in the door, made sufficiently distant from said handle G, that the spring His stretch ed ont when said pin P is placed in said perforation Q, so that whenever said pin P is drawn out from the inside of the door, or pressed or pushed out from the outside of the door, thcspringH brings, or is ad.
bolt is first withdrawn suiciently to insert the pin l);
the pins K andJ are also placed in their respective perforations; the door is now shut, and the operator from'the outside of the door pushes in, with a wire or other small needle or other instrument, the pin I?, whereby the spring H is set at liberty for action, and, consequently, drives the bolt home under its staple O.l
When, the operator desires to open the door withv the same wire or'needle, as before mentioned, he presses in through the perforation N the pin K, which, when disengaged from the door, as' shown in iig. 2, permits the spring I to act, and withdraw the bolt from its staple C, and thereby unlock the door.
Instead of locating the opening Q at the indicatedv place, it may be located rearward of the handle G, at' any other point or place, providing the wire O is of the corresponding length to stretch, and not loverstretch the spring H, in securing` the pin P in said perforation Q.
It will be seen that the perforation N may be changed to any'location on the door, provided that the relative length of spring I and Cord L, and the pulley M- be placed relatively, so as to effect the bolt in like manner, as before described.
I claim, as my invention- The bolt D, spring H, rod O, pin P, cord L, pins K and J, and spring I, all combined and operated subsiantially as and for the purpose herein stated.
JACOB LEVY.
