Description

lnit @Stime IAOOB RAYLS, OF WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 99,276, dated January 25, 1,870.
IMPROVED PAINT-BRUSH.
The Schedule referrnd to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
2 and 3, capable of being contracted and expanded,
To all whom fit may concern.:
Bc it known that I, J A0013 RAYLs, of Washington, in the county of Tazewell, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Brushes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists ivn the mode of fastening the` bristles into the head and handle of the brush, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to rnakeand use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referling to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-` Figure 1. is a vertical section of thefentire brush, and
l.Figures 2 and 3 are sections of the expansion-ring. A represents the .bristles ot' the brush, which are placed within a ring, B, screwed on to the head C, this head being firm-ly attached tothe handle D.
In the centre of the bristles is placed an expansionring, E, which is formed in two halves, shown in figs.
without separating.
Through the ring E is passed a cone, G, and through said cone a screw, I, passes into the handle.
As the screw I is passed into the handle I), it presses the cone npward, expanding the ring E, and, consequently, securely fastening the bristles between said expansionaing E and the outside ring B and head C.
Having thus fully described my invention,
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The construction of theexpanding-ring, in two parts, with its device for preventing their displacement in expanding, in combination with the cone G and screw I, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the expandingring E, cone G, and screw I, the arrangement of the bristles A, ring B, head C, and handle D, all as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
J AOOB RAYLS.
Witnesses BEN. ToBIAs,
MATTHEW CRAIG.
