To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE R. Kns'rnn, a citizenof the United States, residing at Laton, in the county of Fresno and Stateof California, have invented a new and eful Bed for Invalids; and I do hereby d lare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to the class of apparatus employed for supporting invalids in various positions, in order to permit a surgeon to administer treatment, surgically, or otherwise, to the invalid. This particular apparatus will not only-permit surgical treatment to be administered to the invalid, but will allow massages and the like'to be given.

The rimary object of the invention is to provide a convenient form of adjustable bed, so that the invalid may be disposed at various angles. g,

A further object of the invention is to provide means to be manipulated by the invalid for changing the angle of the bed. This means comprises a guide rod upon one side of the bed, an adjustable weight slidable upon the rod and including'means to frictionally engage a groove in the sideof the bed for holding the. weight in its adjusted positions. When the weight is pushed toward the foot of the bed, the head of the bed will be raised, and when the weight is pushed in the opposite direction the head will be lowered. When the foot of the bed is in its lowermost position, an invalid if strong enough may step upon the foot of the bed, and afterward incline the bed at the desired angle by applying weight against the head portion of the bed. By the employment of a bed of this character a patient may be wheeled from his room to the 0 rating table.

Anot er feature of the invention is the production of means for holding the bed in its adjusted positions.

In the drawings, however, there is only disclosed one particular form of the invention, but in practical fields this form may require alterations, to which the. applicant is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended by the appended claims.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

As to theannexed drawings, 1 designates a base, which is in the form of a skeleton structure. This base is provided with the usual caster wheels 2 whereby the bed-may be rolled from place to place. A bearing 3 is provided at the upper portion of the base, to receive a trunnion 4 of the U-shaped support 5. By the provision of the bearing and trunnion the U-shaped support for the bed proper 6, may revolve. The bed 6 is fulcrumed upon the rod 7 which extends transversely of the arms 8 of theU-shaped support. To provide a rest or support for the upper portion of the bed when arranged approximately horizontal a bracket 9 extends laterally from the U-shaped support.

To assist the occupant of the bed to adjust the same atva-rious angles, a weight 10 is provided, for over balancing the foot or the head of the bed. For example, if it is desired to elevate the head of the bed, the weight, which is' slidable upon the guide rod 11, may be adjusted toward the foot of the bed, which will lower the foot and raise the head portion of the bed. To lower the head portion ofthe bed the weight may be adjusted in the opposite direction. To hold the weight in adjusted positions a spring arm is carried thereby. This spring arm 12 is secured to the weight by means of a collar 13, as shown in Fig. 3. To afford resiliency for the spring arm, the same is supplied with a coil 14. One of the side-boards of the bed is formed with a longitudinal groove 14 to frictionally receive the spring arm, whereby the weight may be held in various adjusted posit-ions. The weight is provided with a handle 15 by which the same may be adjusted.

When the bed is arranged in approxition may be imparted upon the cord 16 of this cord is secured to the bed as shown at 18, while the other end is arranged in such a position as to be grasped easlly by the occupant. I

To hold the bed at various angles a pivoted bar 19 is provided upon one side of the bed. This bar 19 engages the notches 20 of the segmental rack 21. To engage the bar with the notches the same is swung horizontally of the bed. No matter what position the bed assumes the bar, whether in engagement with any one of the notches or not always assumes a radial position with regard to the pivot or fulcrum of the bed. From the foregoing it will be noted that a convenient form of invalid bed is provided, and one which has beenfound to fulfil the requirements in hospitals and the like.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In an invalids bed a pedestal, a bed fulcrumed thereto and provided with a guide rod extending longitudinally of the bed, a weight slidable upon the rod for overbalancing the head or the foot of the bed.

2. A fulcrumed bed including a longitudinal guide rod and provided With a groove below the guide rod, a weight slidable upon the guide rod for overbalancing one end or the other of the bed and provided with a spring arm to engage the groove to hold the weight in various adjusted positions.

3. A bed, a sectional pedestal to which the,

bed is fulcrumed; the bed being provided with a longitudinal guide rod and a groove below the guide rod, a weight slidable u on the guide rod including a handle an a spring arm to engage the groove for holding the weight in various adjusted positions.

4. A bed, a U-shaped pedestal, between the arms of which the bed is fulcrumed; the bed includin a uide rod extending longitudinally of t e ed and provided with an elongated groove below the rod; a tubular weight slidable upon the rod including a handle and a spring arm to engage the groove to hold the weight in various adjusted positions, and means for securing the arm to the weight.
