Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 30, 1910. Serial No. 558,674.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUis KASAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, havel invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings, and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in awnings, particularly to means for display to be used in connection with an awning, and for protecting the awning when same is not in use.

The object in view is the arrangement on an awning of a sign, always in view on the front of the awning, and so shaped and supported as to serve also as a cover or protection for the awning when same is raised and out of use.

A further object is the provision for an awning of a sign made of a yielding material stretched between two end pieces so as not to injure a person" who may strike against it, when the awning is lowered and in use.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an awning with the invention applied thereunto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the awning and the sign and protesting member. Fig. 3 is a side view of the awning in a closed position. Fig. 4L is a fragmentary side view of the awning folded with a slightly modified form of protector therefor. Fig. 5 is a detail, fragmentary perspective view of part of the frame of the sign and protector. Fig. 6 is a detail, fragmentary view, certain parts broken away, disclosing the end of the outer bar of the frame of the awning. Fig. 7 is a side of a modified form of frame for the sign and protector.

This invention may be applied in any awning having akframe with a bar at its outer end.

In the application of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, the awning consists of a top covering 1 and side pieces 2, of canvas or other suitable material, and

a frame with a front bar 3Aand side arms 4 pivoted at 5 to the structure on which the whole awning is mounted. The top covering 1 is connected at one end to the front bar 3, and at the other to the building. A plurality of ropes or cables 6 are provided which extend upward from bar 3 over a plurality of pulleys 7, and thence downward to the lifting device 13 to which the same are secured. These ropes or cables 6 are connected with the lifting device 13, so that whenever said device is operated the framework composed of arms 4. and front bar 3 will be pivoted against the structure to which the awning is connected and will fold the covering 1 as shown in Fig. 3.

Pivotally mounted on each end of bar 3 is'v a bracket 19 to which is secured one end of a covering 20 of canvas or other suitable material which is stretched by moving the' nuts 21 outwardly at each end, and with lettering on it forms a sign that can be displayed whatsoever the position of the awning, and a protector for the top covering 1 when the awning is raised. The two end brackets 19 may be locked 'in `any position by the nuts 22 and washers 23, while between the end brackets there are located on the bar 3 one or more brackets 24 which rotate loosely on the bar 3 and follow the outline and position of the canvas 20.

Where the yielding property of this form of sign is not desired it can be made with an entire frame, of wood, metal 0r other appropriate material and without the nuts 21. Connected along the upper edge of the covering 2O is a strip 25 of rubber, leather or similar material, to provide a tight pack ing between the building and the protector 20. The lower edge of the covering is curved slightly outwardly to conduct water away from the awning.

In Fig. 4 is shown a slight modification of the outline of the protector, the same being Vformed by two straight linesy joined at an angle, instead of being an are as in the first form and in fact any outline which is suit* able for protection and the proper display of the let-tering on the sign may be used.

In Fig. 7 is shown a slightly modified form of bracket 19 having a plurality of openings 26 connected by passage ways 27. The openings 26 are designed to receive the ends of bar 3 and the passage-ways 27 permit the lowering or raising of the brackets 19 to adjust the height of the sign.

Having described my invention and its operation, I claim:

l. In an awning, a sign serving. as a rain protecting device being mounted at the extreme end of the awning, said sign being formed to protect the folded canvas of the awning when said awning is folded, said sign being mounted to svvivel crosswise about a longitudinal axisand having means for adjusting and fastening the sign to any desired angle.

2. In an awning, a sign of flexible material serving as a rain protecting device being mounted at the extreme end of the awning, said sign being convexed externally and formed to protect the folded canvas top of the awning when said awning is folded, said sign being mounted to swivel transversely about a longitudinal axis and having means for adjusting and fastening the sign to any desired angle.

4. In an awning, a sign serving as a rain protecting device being mounted at the extreme end of the awning, said sign being convexed externally and formed to protect the folded canvas of the awning When said awning is folded, said sign being mounted to swivel transversely about a longitudinal axis and having means for adjusting and fastening the sign to any desired angle, said sign provided With means for shifting the position of said longitudinal axis and a flexible strip attached to the upper edge of said sign to give firmer Contact of said edge With the building.
