BABY-REST.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA P. Bussum., a citizen of the United States, residing at Rushville, in the county of Rush and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baby-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved article of furniture for use both as a cradle for soothing an infant and also as a dresser to contain the clothing of an infant and the said invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined dresser and cradle constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the drawers of the dresser partly open. Fig.

2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view, partly in section and partly in elevation of one of the bearings which support the cradle or other oscillating element. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing a modified form of bearing for the oscillating element.l Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable spring member.

In my invention I provide a base 1, which is here shown as a dresser, mounted on casters 2 and provided with a plurality of drawers 3. One of these drawers 3 is of a sutlicient width to accommodate the entrance of clothing and the like at full length so as to avoid the necessity of folding and creasing the clothing when placing the same in the drawer. The remaining drawers 3 are of a great deal smaller length and are positioned one above the other. These drawers are adapted for the reception of suitable articles such as shoes or the like. On the ends of the base 1 are suitable brackets 4, which are preferably arranged in pairs one directly above the other, and the upper bracket is of a larger diameter than the smaller bracket, and each pair of these brackets is adapted to 'accommodate the lower port-ion of a standard 5, .and this standard has its extremity reduced so as to be snugly received within the smaller or lower bracket 4.

The numeral 6 designates a bearing which is secured to both of the standards upon their inner faces. Each of the bearings 6 comprise a vertical member 7 having suitable openings adapted for the reception of screws or the like and whereby a bracket is connected with the standard. The brackets 6 are also provided with ,offset arms 8, lthe same being preferably rounded, but which may be rovided with a knife edge as illustrated 1n the detail figure of the drawing. The offset arms of each of the bearings are each provided with an upturned lip or offset 9, and the said offset arms of these brackets are adapted to re ceive an eye 10 provided in the upper eritremity of the hanger arms 11. In the preferred embodiment of the device the evel() is provided. with anti-frictional ball bearings 12, which riding upon the offset arm 8 of the bearing, allows the hanger arms to be oscillated in obedience to the slightest impulse. The arms 11 have their lower ex* tremities forked as designated by the numeral 13, and these forked arms have their lower portions extended at a plane subst-antially parallel with that of the straightened portion of the said arm, the same being pro vided with suitable openings adapted for the reception of securing elements whereby they are connected with a crib or other oscillatory element designated by the numeral 14.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a simple, comparatively cheap and thoroughly effective device for the purpose intended, one in which the standard 5 may be readily removed from the dresser 1, and one in which the cradle body can be oscillated very easily, the ball bearing reducing friction to a minimum and after the oscillating element has started in motion it will continue to swing for some time, a sufficient length of timelto soothe an infant to sleep.

In order to assist in the oscillation of the element 14 I have provided each of the standards 5 with an adjustable spring, the said spring comprising substantially rectangular body portion 15 whichis adapted to tit tightly around the said standard and which is provided with a pair of spaced outwardly projecting arms 1G, the same terminating in oppositely arranged facing curved lips 17. The lips 17 ofthe said member are adapted toI be contacted by the vertical rod of the hanging arms ll and it will be noted that as the said hanging arm connected with the oscillatory element 14: contacts successively each of the lips 17 a constant 0sci1latory movement being imparted to the said member 14 for quite a length of time.

In the detail ligure of the drawing I have provided the horizontal arm` 8 with an upper knife edge 1S and I have also provided the eye l0 of the hanger 11 with a similar sharpened edre 12, this arrangement, it will be noted, tending to greatly reduce the friction between two members.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is In a device for the purpose set forth, a

base, a pair of oppositely disposed remov hanger arms comprising a central member eeaeoa having .its lower portion forked, a body connected with the forked arms, tbe central spaced arms, and the central member of eazhx of the hanger arms being positioned between the angular spring arms and adapted to be contacted thereby when the body member is in motion.
