BAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May16, 1911.
Application filed December 2,1910. Serial No. 595,291.
My invention relates to bails, and has special reference to loose bails for being connected to articles having flanged ends or heads, such as palnt and other cans.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple andeflicient loose form of a bail, which can be easily and conveniently placed around a flanged head can, so that it will engage with the flange on said can head or end in carrying the same and will be held from dropping off or down on the can-on which it is used by the handle on said bail.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved bail, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can hav-,
ing my improved'bail applied thereto: Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bail in position for being placed around the can. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the can with the bail applied thereto and showing the same at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view showing another form of the bail.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawin is illustrated in the drawing, a represents an ordinary metal can, such as for use in containing paints, foods or other goods or materials, and such can is of theusual'construction and shape and provided with the heads or ends I) thereon, which are secured to the body a of the can by the usual seam o and forming an outwardly extending flange (Z beyond said body portion.
The bail is shown at 1 and preferably consists of two flexible bands 2 and 3, which are formed of very thin sheet metal, and are adapted to be connected at their endsto an on, so that when placed in an upright position, the ordinary curved handle 6, preferably, formed of wire, can be connected to said links by the ends on said handle fitting around the upper end 5 on said links by their bent portions 7 and the ends edges of the same being positioned adjacent to and such ends being substantially in parallel line with the body 6 of said handle to hold said handle in connection with said links. The ends of the bands 2 of the bail l are loosely connected to the vertical body or side portions 4 of the links l by such ends being bent around said portions and against the body portion 2 of said band as at 2", and one end of the other band 3 is connected to "the other side portion 4 of one of the links 4, in like manner, as at 3". Before the bail l is placed around the can a, the band 3 is of such a length as to allow the operator to sever the said band at the free end 8 of the same to make the proper length for attaching the same to said band and the body 3' of such band is punched out adjacent to said end 8 to form the clip or lip 9, so that when said bail is passed around the can a such end 8 can be passed through the other or free link 4 and then be bent around the other side portion 4L on said link from the attached end on the band 2 to loosely connect said end to said link, which will also allow said end to be placed under said lip and against said body to hold said end in place and the bail 1 around the said can, as at 8.
It will be evident that' the ends of the bands 2 and 3, other than the free end on the band 3,, can be permanently attached to the body of such bands by riveting or in any other suitable manner, and other means of attaching the free end on the band 3 to the body of such band may be employed, while more than two links can be employed for being connected to the bands. be evident that a single band 1' can be used on the bail with one end attached around a link by bending the same around the body of said link in like manner as the end 2", so that the bail can be placed around the can a, and the other end 8 on said band connected to saidlink, as desired, in which case the other or opposite link for carrying the han- It will also 7 dle with the first named link can be held and positioned by said band in a. seat 10 formed in the bottom edge of said band by a cut away portion, as shown in Fig. 4.
Various other changes in the design and construction of my improved bail may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that my improved bail can be easily and cheaply manufactured and the bands from waste material in the forming of the cans to which it is employed, while it can be quickly placed around the can for instant use, so that when in place on the can, such can will be enabled to be carried by the bail being under and contacting with the end flanged seams on the can. The bail will be prevented from dropping down on the can by the handle thereon engaging or coming in contact with side edges of the cans end flanges, so that the bail will thus always be ready for use, while at the same time it can easily and quickly be detached from the can by opening up the lip and bending back the end of the band engaging with such lip in order that such end can be passed back through the link to free the same from such link and the bail the bail being flexible they will readily conform to the circular shape of the can body and thereby form a neat and finished piece of work when in place on a can having seamed heads, or ends, more particularly when such bands are formed from the same material as such cans.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with a can or other receptacle having a projecting portion extending out from the sides of the same, of a bail for fitting around the body portion of said receptacle and for engaging under and with said projecting portion, said bail comprising a band having a link within the same and one end of which band is connected to another link, a lip punched out from said band for fitting over the other or free end of said band after such end is passed through and bentaround such last named link in placing the bail around said receptacle, and a handle connected to said links and extending over said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I, the said Gnoncn i RUssELL, have hereunto set my hand.
