Description

Fild July .31, 1953 FIG-I.
INVENTOR:
WALTER E. WAE
ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 9, 1935 UNITED PATENT F CE,
1,997,025 TAG HOLDER, Walter Waechtler, San Francisco, Calif. 7 Application Julylil, 1933, Serial No. 6822,9131 l Claims (01. 40-11)" This invention relates' to' improvements in tag holders and more particularly to means for attaching tagholders" to supporting members.
The present 'disclos'ure'has to do with the application of a tag holder to portable cans or containers for petroleum and otherliquid products.
For instance, in making tank wagon deliveries, the driver often fills similar containers with products having confusing characteristics such as gasoline, naphtha and the like easily distinguishable only by proper designation of the containers.
Such containers being of standardized construction and in use in great numbers, there has heretofore been no convenient means for attaching identifyingtags thereto.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a simple tag holder that can be easily and rigidly attached by unskilled persons with the aid of common tools.
Another object is to provide a tag holder that may be used as a tag hanger or as a spring clamp to hold records relatingto the contents of the container such as bills, formulas and the like.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description progresses.
, In this specification and the accompanying drawing, the invention is disclosed in its preferred form. It is to be understood, however, that it is not limited to this form because it may be embodied in other forms without departing from the spirit of the inventon as defined in the claims following the description.
In the one sheet of drawing;
Fig. l is a front elevation of the upper portion of the conventional pouring can or container for motor spirit such as gasoline, having this invention applied thereto. r I Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the bail or handle of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 4 is a plan view from above in horizontal section, see IVIV, Fig. 3, illustrating one way of attaching the holder using the conventional pliers shown in dotted lines. 7
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail showing a different location of the holder on the bail whereby it acts as a spring clamp to hold a paper card.
In detail the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 comprises the metal can body I, having the tapered top 2, the neck 3 and the friction cap 4 with the handle 5.
The brackets 6 and I are fixed to the body of the can top on opposite sides. The bail B is usually formed of a fiat strip of metal having its opposite ends-pivoted to the brackets at 9 and II) with its center portion formed to providea comfortable hand grip at II. These brackets have the lugs I2 and I3, respectively, which prevent the bail droppingbelow ahorizontal position.
Broadly stated, the present invention consists. of a bendable metal clip having a hook thereon and adapted to be easily clinched around the bail of the can or other support. I
This clip It is preferably die stamped and formed from a narrow strip of metal such as mild steel. It has the upset portion l5 bent therein intermediate its length. The apex of this upset portion has two interspaced holes therein adjacent the edges of the clip. I
Intermediate the width of the clip", on each side, of the channel I5, it has the round holes I6 and I1, across the diameter of which it is bent at right angles, see Fig. 4, to form a Ushape the width of the bail strip 8. The two ends I8 and I9 are then bent around the bail and flattened as in Fig. 5 to permanently fix the clip upon the bail at the desired position. The holes l6 and I! weaken the clip and form the enfolding straps 2e 2n and 2 |2I bent around the rounded edges of the bail and insure the bending of the clip at exactly the right point without spring back-to insure the clip I4 against lateral movement on the bail.
The hook 22 may be an integral extension ofthe upset portion I5 but the present structure is preferred by the principal consumers of thi product. I
Thishook is formed in dies with the bent bac end 23, the shank 24, and the upturned head 25. The hook is preferably assembled in the clip before its attachment to the bail. This is done by pushing the hook 22 through the top hole I5 in the clip until the shank 24 lies in the socket formed by the upset portion I5 with the other end of the-hook projecting through the lower hole in the upset portion. This short end is then riveted or beaded over to form the head 25 which holds the hook in the clip under the tension due to the oblique extension of the hook shank through the hole I5. This shank may be welded or otherwise secured in the channel.
The advantage of the assembled hook over the hook integral with the clip is the choice of materials suitable for the hook such as spring brass wire :which is harder and stronger than any softer material suitable for the clip I 4, such as mild steel. I
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the clip is mounted riveted to said clip.
' 3. .A tag holder having a bendable clip with a with sumcient" tension to clamp a card a; therebetween; as compared with the preferred form in Figs. 1 and 2 upon which a metal tag :c' may be detachably suspended.
Having thus described'this invention, what is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. A tag holder having a bendable clip with a center upset portion and flat portions extending on each side of said upset portion; and holes through the fiat portions of said clip, and adapted to be bent across said holes and engage a supporting member; and a hook fixed in said upset portion. V V 2. A tag holder having a clip adapted to. engage a supporting member and having a center upset portion with interspaced holes through the walls thereof; a hook having a shank in said upset-portion and extending through said holes and transverse upset portion having a hole through the wall thereof and holes throughsaid clip on opposite sides of said upset andadapted to be bent across said holes and engage a supporting member; and a hook having a shank in said upset and an end extending through the hole through the wall of said upset. V
4. A tag holder comprising abendable clip with a central upset portion and flat portions extending on each side of said upset portion; and a hook having a shank fixed in the upset portion of said clip; said clip being adapted to have its fiat portions bent aroundv a supporting memberlwith the shank of said hook in theupset' portion interposed between said clip and said supporting member. e
