Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, \VILLIAM Ross and THOMAS Ross, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Crucible-Lid, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has for its object to provide simple and elfective means for preventing or minimizing the escape of fumes from crucibles in brass-founding and like operations.

According to the invention there is provided for the crucible a closely fitting lid gapped to coincide with the pouring-lip of the crucible and having about the gap a lip depending some distance-it may be short-- within the crucible. Any convenient means may be provided for guiding the lid .into position upon the crucible and it may be for holding it in place there.

Figure 1 on the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings is a plan and Fig. 2 an elevation of an example of the improved form of lid as fitted to a crucible of usual construction, the crucible being shown by dotted lines.

According to the example shown in the drawing there is. provided for the crucible A a lid B outwardly conforming to the usual circular shape of the crucible. At one point coinciding with the pouring-lip O of the crucible, the lid B is formed with a segmental circular gap D around Which is a curtain or lip E depending a short distance within the crucible A. About the periphery of the lid B and set so as to fit over the crucible A are three depending arms G embracing the crucible and so holding the lid in position thereon. The number of these arms may of course be varied. To the arm Gr which is opposite the gap D there is attached a slightly resilient strip H engaging 7 under the ring J of the crucible carrier and In use, and the crucible A having been removed from the furnace inserted in its carrier J and skimmed, the lid B is placed in position and kept there during the pouring of the metal, thus preventing or greatly minimizing the escape of fumes, since only the surface of the metal issuing from the crucible lip O comes in direct contact with the air.

Means for the prevention of the escape of fumes from crucibles, comprising a carrying device adapted to externally embrace the crucible, a lid for the crucible, a gap in the lid to coincide with the pouring-lip of the crucible, and a lip about the gap depending within the crucible, a series of arms depending from theperiphery of the lid and Patented May 16, 1911.

2. The combination of a crucible and an external annular carrying ring therefor with a crucible lid having a depending spring arm adapted to engage said carrying ring and thus secure the lid in position durmg pouring.

3. The combination of a crucible and an external annular carrying ring therefor with a crucible lid having a peripheral pouring aperture and approximately opp0- site thereto on the other side of the lid a depending spring arm adapted to engage said carrying ring and thus secure the lid in position during pouring.
