To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN M. Coornn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented oer-- tain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Traps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a steam trap designed to remove water of condensation from radiators, steam coils or pipes of a steam heating system in which a low pressure or partial vacuum is maintained in the return end in which a float is used to automatically control the discharge of the water without any waste of steam.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide simple means whereby a person in charge of the system to which the valve is attached can readily clean out the valve without dismounting it and whereby other unauthorized persons cannot tamper with it or disturb it in any manner.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section through the trap that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a. View in cross section on or about line :c0c of Fig. 1.
As herein illustrated a casing 1 is normally closed at its lower end and provided with an outlet nipple 2 and a lateral inflet nipple 3 above its lower end. A cover 1 is detachably secured on the upper end of the casing. A cylindrical plug 5 is secured in the upper end of the opening through the nipple 2. The upper end of the plug is cylindrically counterbored and is provided with a plurality of ports 6. A float 7 has a recessed lower end from which an axial stem 8 depends to form a closure or slide valve normally sealing the port of the plugs 5 when the float is at its lowest position. A stem 9 upwardly extending from the float 7 is reciprocable in an apertured boss 10 formed on the cover 4 and is provided with a central longitudinal slot above the float.
J ournaled in a lug 11 on the casing adjacent the slotted portion of the stem 9 is a rock shaft 12 the outer portion of which passes through the gland 13 of a stuffing box which seals the opening through the lug. The outer end of the gland 13 is recessed and the outer end of the rock shaft which lies entirely within the counterbored recess is square, polygonal or otherwise fitted for engagement by a socket-key. A rock arm 14 is rigidly secured to the inner end of the rock shaft 12 and passes through the longitudinal slot of the stem 9. By insertion of the proper key into the gland, the rock shaft may be rotated and caused to raise the float. A pin 15 adapted to be engaged by the rockarms, is secured in the stem transversely across the upper end of the stem slot. To aid in excluding dirt from the valve proper a cage 16 of wire gauze or like foraminous material encircles the nipple 5. By this method of construction the steam trap can be readily emptied by manipulation of the float by the person in charge of the same without dismounting the valve; while at the same time parties not authorized to do so cannot work the valve.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
I claim as my invention;
1. In a steam trap, the combination with acasing having in its exterior surface a recess, and also having inlet and outlet openings, and a float actuated Valve movable within the casing and for normally closing said outlet opening, of a device for raising said valve independently of its operation by the float and projecting through said casing, the outer end of said device being shaped to fit a key and terminating within said recess, whereby the operation of said device by means other than the proper key will be prevented.
2. In a steam trap, the combination with a casing having in its exterior surface a recess, and also having inlet and outlet openings, a float-actuated valve movable within in presence of two witnesses.
