VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,431, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed July 19, 1854.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, which are fully set forth in the following specification.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved means for receiving and conducting away the leakage from imperfectly fitted or packed valves.
The improvement over former devices consists in its greafcr co mpactness and the facility with which the plug may be removed with an ordinary Wrench and without disconnecting the waste-pipe which conducts the leakage to the sewer or elsewhere.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a valvewith my improvements att-ached. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shoulder at the upper end of the valve-shell, where the valve-plug joins on. Fig. 3 is an obverse plan of the valve-plug and its shoulder.
A is the valve-shell. B is the valve-plug. C is the valve-stem. D is the stuffing-box. E is the leakage-receiving cup. Fis the cover of theleakagereceiving cup. The valve-sh ell A has the shoulder A, against which the shoulder of the valve-plug binds in the usual manner. The upper surface of the shoulder A has the groove M, annular in form, entirely. surrounding the aperture of the valve-shell into which the plug is screwed. From this annular groove M the duct N leads from the Wall of the valve-shell to the nipple P on the outer surface of the shell. This nipple is provided wit-h a suitable thread to receiveawastepipe. The valve-plug B has the shoulder B, formed to receive a wrench in the usual manner. On the under face of said shoulder I provide the annular groove M', in such position as to exactly match and overliethe groove .M on the corresponding surface of the shoulder A of the valve-shell. Into this groove M the ports Bl are arranged to open, leading therefrom through the shoulder B to the up- Serial No. 138,178. (No model.)
per side thereof. The leakage-receiving cup E is preferably made integral with the Valveplug, but may be a separate piece secured by Water-tightjunction to the upper side of the shoulder B', outside of and encircling the ports B2.
The operation of the device is, that whenever, by reason of imperfect joining of the valve-plug to the valve-shell, any leakage occurs through the 4thread at that junction, the water so escaping will nd its way into the annular groove M,and will pass thence through the duct N and be discharged through the nipple l?, to which a suitable connecting-pipe being attached, leading to proper wastepipe, the leakage will flow away Without causing damage. Any Waste occurring through the stuffing-box around the valve-stemwill in like manner Iiud its way first into the leakage-receiving cup, as in the former device, and will pass thence by the ports B2 into the annular groove M, and thence by the duct N into the waste-pipe.
I am aware of the patent granted to Valworth, March 4, 1879, and of the patent grant ed to Blake, February 10, 1880, and I do not claim anything therein shown; but
I claim- In a valve, the shell having the duct N, the exteriorlyaccessible plug having the ports B, and the leakage-receiving cup surrounding said ports, said shell and plug having theirbinding-shoulders provided with an annular groove communicating with the duct N and with the portsB'l, al1 combined and co-operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
