` IIIUIIIIIIIIIIII JOHN W. CRABILL, OF PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA.
SHABPENING DEVICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application led May 31, 1910. Serial No. 564,103.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN W. CRABILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices of that class used for sharpening or pointing jewelers peg wood, pencils or the like.
One obj ect of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character having a spring support or guide co-acting with a relatively stationary cutting knife and an improved means for mounting the guide and the knife.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with an' improved means for attaching it to the edge of a work bench, desk or table.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sharpening device showing it mounted on a support. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device with the support in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective. view of a cutting knife or blade.
My improved sharpening device comprises a body 1, within which are arranged in longitudinally converging relation, a cutting knife or blade 2, and a guide 3, the latter being preferably resilient, and as here shown in t-he form of a leaf spring having one end riveted or otherwise secured as at 4, to the bottom of the body 1, and its free end curved, longitudinally and opposed to the cutting edge of the knife. The body 1, is preferably constructed from a metal plate or sheet, bent to provide a bottom 5, two sides 6, and two top sections 7, the latter extending inwardly from the upper edges of the sides 6, and be. ing disposed in converging relation with respect to the bottom 5, and having their opposing longitudinal edges spaced apart whereby a longitudinal slot or opening 9 is formed. The knife is formed from the rectangular piece of steel or other suitable metal, and is arranged for longitudinal sliding movement within the upper portion of the open body 1, and in contact with the under faces of the top sections 7. A clamping screw or bolt 10 is provided for fastening the knife in adjusted position, said bolt having its threaded body portion slidably arranged in the opening or slot 9, and extending through an opening 11 in the knife.
On the lower end of the threaded body of the bolt is an enlarged head 12 which slidably engages the under faces of the top sections 7 of the body 1, and on the upper projecting end of the bolt is a milled clamping nut 13, a washer 14 being interposed between the nut and the upper faces of the top sections 7.
For the purpose of preventing the knife from turning on the clamping bolt 10, it is provided with a guide lug 15, arranged to slide in the opening or slot 9 in the body of the device, said guide lug being preferably formed by stamping up a portion of thc knife as will be readily understood on reference to Figs. 3 and 4.
The body 1 may be mounted in any man ner and on any support, but as illustrated, I preferably employ an angular arm or bracket 16, the long horizontally disposed end of which is suitably secured to the bottom 5 of the body of the device, and the short end of which depends, and is adapted to be removably engaged with a socket loop 18. The latter is formed by bending a metal strip or plate into U shape and securing its ends to the edge of a work bench, desk or table, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In using the invention, the wooden peg, pencil or other object to be sharpened or pointed, is inserted in the large end of the body 1, and held by the spring guide 3, against the beveled cutting edge of the knife, and the object is then withdrawn so that the knife will shave or cut it. By varying the angle of the stick, peg, pencil, etc., the amount cut by the knife may be varied at will, so that the point may be made long, blunt, tapered or beveled.
I claim:
The herein described sharpening device comprising a body open at opposite ends spi'ing forming an inclined guide disposed longitudinally in the body between the sides thereof, and secured at one end to the bottoln of the body, the. `free end of the said inclined spring guide converging toward the top in one direction, a knife plate disposed in the body between the sides thereof, longitndinally movable therein, and bearing against the undei` side of the top and converging toward the said inclined guide in one direction, the said knife plate having a guide lug operating in the said slot, and securing means foi' the said knife plate, the said securing ineans also operating in the said Slot of the top for longitudinally ad- 15 justing said knife plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
