HIRAM O. PARTRIDGE AND JAMES PRESTON, OF BAIN BRIDGE, N EW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 99,227, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-AUGERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it muy conce-rn:
-Be it known that we, HLRAM O. PARTRIDGE and J AMES PREsToN;otBaililniclge, in the county of Ohenango, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inY Post-Angers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of the di'erent parts, forming a post-auger, and in the manner of combining and attaching the same together'. f
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of our anger complete;
Figure 2 is a plan view ofthe plate, with the cutter attached;
'Figure 3 is a perspective of a washer used to properly connect the dierent parts; and
Figure 4 is a perspective of the auger-part.
Arepresents the stern, which at its lower end is pointed and cut with screw-threads, and atits upper end is provided with a handle, B, to turn the auger. On this stem the other parts of the auger are placed iu the following manner:
The auger-partC- is formed of any suitable metal, with female screw, so that it can be screwed on to the stem A.
Itis provided with a steel liange, a., in auger-form, riveted or otherwise secured to it.
Above the anger-part O, and resting upon the same, is the plate D, which is to be of' the size the hole is desired. On one side this plate is cut open, the out extending from the edge to beyond the centre a short distance.
One edge in this out is bent downward at a suitable angle, and on its upper side is Aplaced the cutter b, which extends along the whole portion thus bent down.
The outer end of the cutter bis provided with a slot running parallel with its outer edge. Through this slot aI bolt is passed through the plate D', and held on the under side by a uut, thus securing the cutter, and allowing it4 to be adjusted at will.
The front or lower edge of the cutter b is rounded as shown by dotted lines in fig. 2.
The stem A passes through the centre of the plate D,.the cent-re being at the inner end of the 'portion bent down, as above mentioned, and as the cutter b covers this entire portion, the 'stem A also passes through the inner end of the cutter.
The plate d, although placed horizontal; is still so constructed that the cutter b will form, as it were, a continuation of the auger-flange a.
On top of the plate D, or rather on top of the inner end of tlie cut-ter l), and around the stem A, is
placed a washer, E, the under side of which is bevelled to correspond with theA incline of the cutter, and to present a horizontal surface on its upper side for the nut G, which holds the different parts together at any point on the stem A desired.
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is K 1. The manner of holding the plate D upon the stem A, by means of the auger-part O, and nut G screwed on the stem, one below and the other above .said plate, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the stem A, handle B, auger-part O, with flange a, plate D, cutter b, washer E, and nut G, all constructed as described, substantially as and for the purposes herein Aset forth.
I n testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own,
we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM O. PARTEIDGE. JAMES PRESTON.
Witnesses:
l GEORGE Tann,
1t. W. HUMPHREY.
