Afu rther object of'the invention is the 35 ,provision of an improved means for punching the classifying perforationsin the cards. In the present machine, aside from improvements made in theseveral mechanisms setforthand described inmy prior application, one of themain improved features resides in the means for feeding the cards or blanks to and from the-punching mecha nism. In my prior machine, the cards were individually placed in a carrier by the operator, the carrier thenmanually' pushed into position and, after being punched, were returned to their originalposition by: the
manual release of a' lever,'all of which required time. In :the present instance, how--" ever, a bundle -of cards or other blanks is placed "in a suitable receptacle therefor andoneata' time to the unching. mechanism and therefrom. into .a suitable jreceptacle, whence they are removed in piles, the operator the present instance having 'nothing whatever to. do with the feeding of the cards except to place them in stacks or piles in'one receptacle and remove, them. in like manner from the other, so that the entire time of the operator may be devoted" to the .the cards automatically selected, and fed operation of' the keys which set and lock the'punches of the punching mechanism. The present improvement comprises in a general way, punch-selectingmeans or what 1 may beproperly designated key mechanism- 9 fordetermining the particular punch or punches to be usedand for locking that with part of the mechanism and shown punch or punches in position to properly herein connected with the keys for iegistering or counting up certain of the items punched, means, designated as gang punching means and which. in the present in stance is removable independently of the main punching mechanism, 1 for punching certain items on the card so that'all cards of I a certain series may be punched :alike .'wliere by the cards'maybe readily classified, means for automatically releasing all of thepunch selecting keys thereby topermit them' to return to their normal position, means for automatically feeding the cards to and from the punching mechanism, and a schedule or copyfeeding means for the schedule in accordance' with which the cards are to be unched' all of which means or mechanisms punched simultaneously in the card on the operation of a single lever, and in which certain items so punched may all be counted or registered, and in addition, the card be automatically fed to and carried away from the punching mechanism, and also as a new card is brought into position the schedule or copy actuated or fed so that the' new card may be perforated in accordance with such schedule, all operated by powerdriven means. I
' In the present embodiment of this machine it is shown particularly adapted for use with that form of card usually used in connection with the census, -although it is to be understood that the machine in the present or in a somewhat modified form thereof may be used for various purposes. In the preferred form shown, suitable frame work is provided for .the support-ofthe several mechanisms hereinafter described.

Secured to .the base is a pair of brackets 13 having sleeves 14 for the reception of the driving shaft 15. Mounted loosely on this driving shaft is a driving pulley 16, which is continuously rotated from any suitable. source of power. 'In the present instance this pulley is rotated by means of worm gearing l7 suitably housed, as at 18, the housing bracket 19 preferably being of a form which will permit it to be attached to the table or other suitable support on which the machine may. be mounted. The worm 20 of this worm gearing is of a form which will enable it to be attached to a suitable motor shaft.
Supported below the punch-carrying plate 5 and on the base of the frame work is a die-carrying support comprising a suitable frame 21 'carryiugthe die 22. This die carrying frame or support 21 is provided at its ends with guides 25 adapted to slide in guideways 26 located on the inner side of the side walls 27 of the base. Projecting from the guides 25 and through elongate slots 28 in these side walls 27 is a pair of studs 29. On' the outer ends are fixed rolls 30.

Each of these cam slides is held in engagement with its cam on the driving shaft by a suitable spring 34, and each slide is provided with a cam surface 35 engaging with the roller carried by the guide of the die-carrying support, whereupon whenthe slides are shifted in one direction, as forward, the die-carrying support will be lifted and when the slide, through the medium of- -its spring, is shifted backward or returned to its normal positiomthe die-carrying support will be lowered away from" the punches.
The shifting ofthe die-carrying. support, however, only occurs when the constantly rotating .driving wheel hereinbefore referred to is connected or clutched to the driving shaft, and to secure this result I'use substantially the same means as that shown and described in my prior application, although the details thereof are somewhat modified. This connecting means consists of a shiftpresent instance is in the form of a thumb bar 39 located in front of the keys. This bar is carried by a lever frame 40'pivoted adjacent to the upper end of the basket frame, a suitablespring 41 being used to return the bar to its.normal position. This lever frame is connected by a rod 42 with a pin shifting member or lever 43 pivoted to a suitable bracket 44 on the base of the machine. One
arm of this lever 43 is held in position by a spring, (not shown), to engage the head 45 of the shiftable pin and hold it out of contact with'the driving wheel. On the depression of. the thumb-bar 39, however, the lever will be shifted, thereby to releasethe head of the shiftable in and permit the latter: to be shifted by its spring into position to engage the stud on the driving wheel, thus connecting up the same withgits shaft so as .to rotate the same and actuate the diecarrying support in the manner hereinbefore ,stated, that is" to say, the rotation of the driving wheel will rotate, .through the medium of this connecting pin andits arm, the shaft thereby to-raise and lower the diecarryin frame. The head of the shiftable pin as it completes its rotation is engaged by said lever. 43,- which is bent to form a cam surface thereby to retract the pin and shift it away from the driving wheel stud.
The punching mechanism in' the present improvement is similar to that set forth in my prior application, and comprisesv a. series of punches arranged in two sets, one set comprising the main set consisting of a series of punches 50, only some of which are shown in Fig.1, corresponding in number with the number of actuating keys or punch= selecting devices, and theother set compris- .which thepunches extend, the heads resting upon such plate. stance located above the top plate, each spring being operative when its key is depressed to pull-or shift the key into such positionthat the offset of the key will come under the'underside of the platform or top plate 9 and thus be held down in its punchlocking position. --Inother words, as each .key is depressed against the tension of its spring the spring will act to shift the key so that the offset thereon will lock the key in such defpressed position with the lower in juxtaposition to its particular punch,.the'reby to prevent the upward movement of the punch. When the desired number of keys have been thus manipulated and the punches 'of the set 50 locked against separate movement, it' will be observed that if the die is shifted upwardwith the card unched those punches which are locked in 7 position .will perforate the card, while those punches not locked in position. will be shifted upward in the punch-carrying plate 5 by the card as the weight of such punches. is not sufficient to perforate the'card. After the desired keys have been manipulated to thus select the proper punchesand lock them in position to perforate the card, the operator may then, by an examination of th'e depressed keys, immediately determine whether the proper keys have been depressed. If one or more are incorrectly depressed a-mereteuch will re-., lease them from their locked position. This being determined, the operator will then actuate the thumb bar 39, whereupon the shiftable pin- 36 will be released and connection be made between the same and-the constantlyrotating driving wheel to thereby rotate the driving shaft and shift the die and its card upward into engagement with the key-locked punches, whereupon the card will be perforated by those punches which are locked against movement by the keys. After the card is properly. punched in the manner' just described, the die, together with the card is lowered away from the punchesand the keys all released and returned by the action of the springs to their normal position,'while the punches remain hanging in The releasing of the keys ,is obtained in the present organization by suitable keyreleasing means substantially similar to that shown and described in my prior application, except that insteadof being located on the top of the platform 9 of the machine it is located underneath the same. It comprises a shiftable or sliding plate 70 pro vided with suitable openings 71'for the pas sage of the key levers .11 .therethrough. This plate is suitably guided under the plat-' form'9 and is connected "with the power driven shaft b a pair of rods '72 connected w to the key-shifting plate 70. These rods at their rear ends ,are connected by links 73 with a rock shaft 74 supported in brackets 75 attached to the frame work. One end ef this rock shaft 74 is provided with an arm 76 to which the upper end of a rod ,-77,
mounted to slide in sleeves on the base, is-
' move upward to shift the rock shaft and thereby shift the key-releasing plate and release the keys from their depressed positions, this occurring after the punching of the card.
In a machine of this character it is necessary that all of the cards of a series shall be punched at one or more places alike, that is to say, if the population and its characteristics of a particular locality are being recorded, then all of the cards for that locality should be classified in such a manner that should any one or more of the cards get out of place it can'be readily determined to what locality itbelongs. Prior to my before mentionediimprovement this has been done subsequent to the main punching of the cards by means of. an independent punching apparatus, a series of cards being usually punched at the same time, so that should the operator drop a card on the floor, or otherwise misplace the same prior to its being punched to indicate to what class it belonged, there has been no means of ascertaining to what 10- cality the card belonged and to what class or series of cards it should be returned. To do away with the above mentioned serious disadvantages I provided means whereby, in-
dependently of the main set of punches, the
card will also be punched to indicate to which class it belongs. This I accomplished by the provision of. a separate gang of punches 'not under the control of the keys, as hereinbefore stated. In my prior machine, however, whenever these punches required resetting, which was frequent, it
necessitated the removal of the plate 5 carrying both sets of punches, and as the punches were loosely hung in the plate it followed that if by any accident the plate was dropped by the operator or tilted and the punches fell out considerable loss of time resulted in replacing them, thus necessitating a verycareful handling of the plate to avoid such accidents. In'order to do away I} with these disadvantages, the present maparticular punches which were in position.
But, as stated, in order to'change the punches of this set it necessitated the removal of the punches of both sets. In the present machine, instead of utilizing the overhanging part of the bracket to prevent the upward movement of the punches of the particular set under consideration, I provide a removable locking member or plate 80 for locking the punches 60 in position in a similar manner to that in which the punches of the other set 50 are locked in position by the keys.

J g a 'In my prior machine, only the punches which, were to be used each time a certain ,set of cards was to. be punched could be placed in position, but in the present in stance, the entire gang of punches may be set in the punch-carrying plate 5, since those punches which are not locked will be raised by the card and their upper ends pass into the. openings of the plate 8.1and thus not pimch the card, -while the particular punches which are to be utilized for punchingthe card will be prevented from being raised by the card by means of the locking member 80 referred to, andfor this purpose this member, as stated, is provided with a series ofxperforations 81. Short studs or pins 82, which may be readily fastened in position when e member 80 is removed,
are carried by this plate 80 with the heads thereof in position to engage the upper ends of the punches of the classifying gang, so that when certain punches of the classifying gang are to be used to punch perforations in the card, pins corresponding to the positions of these punches are placed in the removable plate 80 and the pIate then re-set on top of the guiding pla e 8. Forthis purpose the plate is provld-e with a suitable handle 83 and a fastening, which in the present instance comprises a pair of uprights r brackets 83 having'openings registerin with an opening through the handle of the plate and in which a pin 84, provided with all, knurled head 85, is passed. 7 v
From the foregoing itwill be seen that when certain pins are placed in position in this removable locking'plate-they will prevent the corresponding'punches of the gang from being raised by the card, so that the card "will be punched by those particular punches which cannot be raised upward by the card as the same is raised by the dies, the other punches of the set,however, being sufficiently loose so that as the card raises these punches will be raised and thus remain idle without punching the card. Thus the particular punches 60 which it is desired shall perforate the card will be locked. in precisely the same manner as the punches of the other set 50 are locked by the depressed keys.
The die 22 hereinbefore referred to comprises a pair of perforated plates 23 and 24, the perforations of both of whichplates register and correspond in number with the number of .punches carried by the punch carrying plate 5 and are spaced apart, as at 86, for the reception of a card or blank intermediate thereof. These plates are fixedly connected to and form a part of the die carrying frame 21. In my prior machine itwas necessary to space these die plates 23 and 24 sufiiciently far apart for the passage of both the card carrier and card. 'In the present instance, however, as the shiftable cardcarrier is entirely done away with the plates are spaced just suflici'ently' apart to permit the passage of the card therebetween', which, as hereinbefore stated, is automatically selected and fed into position.
25 The card carrying and feeding means comprises, in the present instance, a suitable stationary card carrier in the form of a receptacle 90, preferably of skeletonformation, usually located at the rear of the machine and of a size to receive a stack or pile of cards. This card receptacle is fixedly at tached to the frame work, a part of the bottom thereof beingmovable. This movable part-comprises a sliding member or plate 91 suitably guidedat the bottom of the receptacle, and on the bottom of this receptacle, including this plate, the cards are placed.

For insuring the proper feeding of the cardbetween the die plates and therefro'm after it has been punched, the die is. pro 1 vided-with knurled feed rolls 105 and 106. These rolls are likewise located in pairs, two pair at each end of the card, one of each pair. being positively driven, and in the present instance the lower rolls are shown as the posi tively driven ones. These four lower rolls v 106 are mounted upona pair of shafts 107 I supported in the-side members of the frame-- work or-base, the side members ofthe die-2 carrying support 21 having" elongated slots 109. through which these shafts pass, so that the die ma be raised and lowered relatively to these eed rolls. After the card is fed into position, and when the die is raised, the forward feedingof the card ceases owing to the fact that, although the lower feed rolls are positively driven, the
card is carried away from the peripheries thereof in a manner which will be readily understood. For limiting the forward feed of thecard, in other words, for preventing the card from being fed from the die prior to the punching thereof, a suitable stop mechanism is provided, (see Figs. 2 and 7), which, in the present instance, comprises a pair of reciprocating stop pins115 movable in a pair of openings located at the front of v the die support 21. Asthe perforated card is fed forward it is gripped bya feeding mechanism located at the front'side of the machine, which, in the present instance, comprises two pair of knurled feed rolls 183 mounted in a similar manner to those at the rear side of the machine, the lower shaft 184 in the present instance having a. gear 185 in mesh with the intermediate gear 180 hereinbefore referred to, by means of-which it is positively driven. Motion is imparted by frictional contact of the feed rolls 'carrled thereon to the upper feed rolls-carried'on the upper shaft 186 which may be held in engagement therewith by means of springs, the shaft 186 being mounted in suitable bearings which will allow sli ht playthereof. 7 The counting mechanism is substantially similar to that shown and described in my prior application and is operated in a substantiallysimilar way, and therefore a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary. This counting orregistering means comprises, in the present instance, a counter, one for each of the keys, according to the number of keys it is desired to have the counting mechanism attached to. The frame work of the machine is provided with a back plate or upright/141 having openings 142. Attached to the front of this upright and adjacent to each opening is'located a counter 140, each attached to its key by a suitable sliding 'bar'143 guided in the frame work and connected by a link 144 with its key.
The rear end of this bar 143 is pivotally connected by a link 145 with a connecting lever 136 the upper endof which extends through the opening 142 in the back plate and is connected with the counter. The link 145 is provided with a recess 146 in its upper edge which is normally in position under a cross bar 147, which is connected by arms to a rod 148 mounted in brackets on the rear of the frame work, and one of these arms is connected by a link 149 with a reciprocating rod 150 mounted to slide in a sleeve 151 attached to the base of the machine. This rod 150 is provided with a roll 152 held by means of a spring 153 in contact with a cam 154 located on -the driving shaft, whereby at the proper time the counting mechanism will be operated in the same manner as that shown and described in my prior application.
Heretofore in machines of this class the copy or schedule holder has'been separate and independent of the machine, and consequently it has been necessary to manually operate thesame.
