It is the object oi my invention to provide a novel oice machine for punching paper and the like, f or use, for instance, in an identiiication system. lnstancing such identification system, it may be ass med that a letter of credit is issued to a certain person for a given amount, and that the letter of credit has holes therein, which Lholes are located therein in selective positions to correspond with the identifying data, and the key therefor, urnished to the probable payers oi the letter of credit, as more fully explained in my aforesaid copending application.
It is the object of my invention to provide improved means whereby to locate selector bars, and to hold the same in selected positions, by novel means resisting great punching strains; further, to provide novel slide bars for the selecvtor bars which are exceptionally strong and durable and readily movable; further, to provide novel mounting means for the latter; further, to provide novel means-whereby to hold the selected selector bars in selected positions after the punching operation has been begun in order 'to complete the desired punchings according to the original selections oi the selector bars; further, to provide novel mounting means for the punches; and iurther, to provide novel clearing means for the slide bars.
My invention consists in novel means for accomplishing these various purposes, and i'n the novel parts and novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter described f and claimed. I

The frame of my improved device comprises a base 2l, from which posts 22, 23 extend u wardly. The posts are fixed in bearings 24 in 86 the base.
The base is preferably in the form of a trough comprising a bottom 25 and a marginal flange 26. The parts for operating the punch are located in the trough. The bottom of the trough is provided 90 with an opening 2'7, closed by a pan 28, hinged to the base by hinges 29, and held in closed position by a spring latch 30, pivoted to the base on a screw 31 and received under a keeper 32 on the pan. The pan receives the punchings.
A frame 35 has bearings 36 at its respective corners about the posts 22, 23 and is slidable up and down on said posts. It has outer marginal depending flanges 37 and suitable crossribs for strengthening the same. The punch frame normally rests on the base, there being coasting lugs 38, 3Q respectively on flanges 40 on the base and on the flanges 3'?, at the respective corners of the base and punch frame.
A die-plate is iixed to the punch frame by means of screws 46. The die-plate is provided with a seriesA of rows of punch holes 47 complemental to the `junior punches hereinafter described, 'ad with a master punch hole 48, com- 110 a detail of the 'is provided for plemental to the master scribed. (Fig. 3.)
In the present exempliflcation the die-plate is shown as the movable one of the complemental pair of punching parts, the punch being exemplied as the relatively stationary member of the cutting pair, although either member of the cutting pair, or both members of the cutting pair may be movable, and the positions of the punches and dies may be reversed, without departing from the spirit of my invention stated in the accompanying claims.
The means exemplified for operating the dieplate comprise a pair of rocker-rods 51, 52, which are shown of cornered cross-section. The rockerrod 51 has a journal extension 53 screwed thereinto, as at 54, and journaled in a bearing 55 in the base. The other end of this rocker-rod has a reduced extension 56. about which there is a journal sleeve 57, journaled in a bearing 58 in the base. The rocker-rod 52 has journal extensions similar to the journal extension 53, at its respective ends, journaled in bearings at the ends thereof in the base. (Fig. 14.)
The rocker-rods are at each of their ends provided with levers 61, 62, which rock therewith, these levers having holes corresponding in crosssection to the cross-section of the rods, so that the arms rock with the rods. The respective pairs of levers comprise arms 63, 64, which have a joint between them, as by means of a shoulder screw 65 received through a slot 66 in the arm 63, and threaded into a threaded hole in the arm 64. 'I'his causes combined movements of the levers. (Figs. 1, 3 and 4.)
An operating handle 68 is iixed to one of the rocker-rods, as to the reduced extension 56 o1' the rocker-rod 51, the operating arm being fixed thereto by a set-screw 69. This operating arm manual operation of the machine, although connections for power operations thereof may be provided.
Arms 71, 72 of said levers have connection with the punch frame i'or reciprocating the same, as providing said arms with slots 73, 74, pins 75, 76 on the punch frame being located in said slots for transmitting rocking movements of the levers into reciprocating movements of the punch frame. Suitable cushioning means are provided punch hereinafter defor cushioning descent o1' the punch frame.
The die plate 45 is provided with ledges 77 overhanging the flanges 26 of the base for preventing pinching of the fingers of the operator between the die-plate and the base.
A punch frame 81 has a series of punches 82, and a master punch 83 therein. The punches 82 may be termed junior punches. They are arranged in rows, preferably of ten punches each, a suitable number of'rows being provided, of which there may be twelve, as an example.
The punch frame comprises a skeleton frame 84, a plate 85 at the top o! the latter secured thereto, as by screws 86, and a plate 87 at the bottom of the frame, secured thereto by screws 88. (Figs. 3 and 4.) The plates are provided with registering holes 89, 90, in which the punches are guided in axial directions. The master punch is guided in similar holes correspondingly shaped for the master punch. (Fig. 6.)
The punches comprise a reduced punching Shank 91, having the cutting end 92, these cutting edges coacting with the cutting edges o1 the punch holes in the die-plate for cutting the sheet. 'I'he punch has an upper shank 93 of larger diameter, which reciprocates in the hole 89, and forms a shoulder 94 between the two Shanks of different diameters of the punch.
'Ihe shoulder is normally at a level with the lower face of the plate 85. An eyelet 95 is received about the reduced shank of the punch, and is seated against the shoulder 94. The eyelet is forced upon the reduced shank. It has an outwardly extending annular flange 96, which forms a shoulder for one end of the spiral spring 97, about the reduced shank of the punch, the other end of this spring being seated by the upper face of the punch plate 87. The flange of the eyelet limits upward movement of the punch by striking the plate 85. (Fig. 6.)
The master punch may be similarly formed and may have similar guiding connections in the plates 85, 87, and be provided with a similar shoulder, and have a similar eyelet received similarly thereabout, and a spring 98 between the eyelet and the plate 87 for normally ietracting the master punch. (Fig. 3.)
This forms a substantial, cheap and effective means for mounting the punches and for instantly returning the punch out of its punching position, and to cause the punches to be effectively moved axially so as to maintain their upward positions, determined by the positions of the respective selector bars.
There is a sheet receiving space 101 between the die plates 45 and the plate 87 formed, for instance, by strips 102, 103, the inner edges of which form gaging edges for positioning the sheet so as to cause registry of the sheet in correct relation in said space for punching the holes therein in correct positions. The plates 45, 85, 87, the gage strips 102, 103, and the frames 35, 84 are rigidly secured together by screws 104 for causing all of these parts to move together when operating the operating hanis a short post located under the space 101. (Figs. 4 and 8.)
Selector means are provided for selecting which of the punches in the series of punches are to be operated, and in the present exemplifcation tripping or clearing mechanism is provided in each of the rows of selector parts, so that when one of the selector parts in any row is operated, the balance of the selector parts therein are released. The selector parts are arranged in rows complemental to the punches in the respective rows of punches.
The selector parts are exempliiied as bars 108. These bars are arranged to be placed in coactive relations with the respective punches of the series of punches. They are shown mounted in a selector frame 109 provided with bearings 110 at three of its corners received about the upper ends of the posts 22 and iixed to said posts, as by setscrews 111. Guide bars 112, 113 are secured respectively to the upper face and to the lower face of the frame 109, as by means of screws 114 passing through registering apertures in said bars and in the frame, nuts 115 being threaded to said screws for clamping the parts together. (Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7.)
The bars 112, 113 are provided with notches 116, 117, in which the bars 108 are guided and reciprocate. The walls of said notches and the edges of the adjacent bars form the guides for said shanks.
Pins 123 received through said bars locate said Washers and limit upward movements of the bars, by contact with the lower faces of the bars 112.
The bars 1G53 are provided with lugs 124, which are pressed laterally from the body of said bars and form shoulders 125. The bars 108 extend through holes 126 in the upper walls 127 of slide bars 128. The lower ends oi the lugs 124 have outer inclined faces 129. These lugs are arranged to be pushed through the holes 126 by operation or a selective key 13@ in order that the lugs may be positioned under said upper wall for holding the selector' bar downwardly in selected position. (Figs. 8-11.)
The holes are respectively suiiiciently Wide to permit the body or" 'the selector bar and said lug to pass therethrough, thereby moving the slide bar endwise while the lug is passing through the hole, the slide bar being automatically retracted when this lug has passed through said hole for placing one wall of the hole in obstructing relation with the lug to hold the lug and the selector bar in down position.
The slide bars are provided with depending flanges 131 at their respective margins, forming the slide bars substantially U-shaped in crosssection, thereby making a very substantial structure. (Fig. 12.)
The slide bars are arranged side by side in the machine, as exemplied in Figs. 2 and 4, and are arranged to be moved independently and freely endwise, so that actuation of any slide bar will not produce actuation of any other slide bar, and insuring independent movement of all o the slide bars.
The respective slide bars are provided with slots 1341 at their respective ends, through which shanks 136 of hooks 13'? are received. These hooks are presented in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 3, and are so placed as to reach under the upper wall oi the slide bar to suflicient extent to support the slide bar in all of its relations. (Fig. 12.)
These shanlrs and hooks extend from the inner flanges 138 of channel bars 139, secured to the selector ira-me. The channel bars have outer depending ianges 140, 141. (Fig. 3.)
Each of the slide bars has a helical spring 142 attached thereto, one end of the helical spring being received through one of the slots 134 in the slide bar and the other end of the helical spring being secured to the outer depending flange 141. These springs act to normally urge the slide bars in one direction, toward the side of the selector bars at which the selector lugs are located, so that the lower inclined faces of said lugs may automatically move the respective slide bars to permit passage of said lugs, the springs automatically returning the slide bars to normal positions for placing their upper walls 12.7 above the lugs 124, which have been depressed so as to locate the selector bars in selective positions.
The depressing oi any one of the selector bars 168 in a row oi selector bars moves the slide bar for that row laterally so as to move all of the obstructing walls of the holes 126 therein later- -ly out of engagement with any of the lugs 124 which may have been thereunder, for releasing all oi said selector bars which may have been previously depressed in said row, the slide bar immediately retracting for locating one of its end walls oi said holes above the lug of the selector bar, which is momentarily depressed, for retaining said depressed selector bar in depressed position, and insuring that only one of said selector bars in any one row thereof shall remain in depressed position, it being assumed that only one oi said selector bars is depressed at a time.
Any selector bar in each of the rows may be thus depressed and remain in depressed position, the depressed selector bars being those which control the operation of the punches for producing. the identifying holes in the letter or" credit or other sheet placed in the machine.
The depending anges 131 of one of the slide bars 128 form contact parts arranged to contact th-e master punch 83, (Fig. 15), and to be in contact position throughout all punching operations, so that the master punch will punch at each punching `iperation.
The slides 128 are held in down position by having their upper faces Contact the shoulders 143 on the inner depending flanges 133 of the channel bars 139 (Fig. l2). The channel form of the slide bars insures rigidity of said slide bars to resist punching stresses throughout their lengths resisted by said shoulders at their respective ends, and permits the selector bars and the keys to be placed in close association for compact structure and arrangement.
There is a tendency for slide bars of this character to shift endwise on account of the narrowness of the shoulder 125 of the lug 124, or of any i shoulder oi like nature which is moved under a slide bar to position a selector' bar during the punching operation. This has been an objection to punching machines employing devices of this nature.
1 have avoided this objection by providing locking means for the slide bars which move into coaction during approach movements between the punch plate and the punches, which locking means are in locked association when the punching strain is imparted to the slide bar, for maintaining the punching parts in punching relation until the punching is completed.
A stop 151 is mounted on the punch frame. It is shown as a plate 152, provided with a flange 153, and secured tothe punch frame by screws 154. The ange extends across the ends of all the slide bars. The slide bars are provided with coacting stops 155. These are shown as one of the ends of the slide bars. The flange is normally positioned in a plane beyond the ends of the slide bars when the latter are in retracted or normal position, and it is normally located outside the paths of movements of the slide bars.
The movements of the slide bars and the locking relation of the stops are exemplified in Figs. 8 to 11 inclusive. Fig. 8 represents the normal relation of the parts, with the slide bar in retracted position and the punch frame in lowered or unpunching relation, the slide bars being free to move above the flange.
Fig. 9 represents the position of the slide bar while a key is being depressed with the lug 124 of the selector bar passing through the hole 126 in the slide bar, thereby shifting the slide bar endwise. This shifting moves the end of the slide bar to a position above the flange.
Fig. 10 represents the lug as having passed through the slot in the slide bar and the slide bar having automatically retracted to locate the lug under the end wall of the slot for holding the selector bar and its key downwardly in constant relation with the punch when the punch frame is raised, otherwise the positions of the slide bar and flange are the same as in Fig. 8.
Fig. 11 represents the parts in substantial punching relation, the punch frame having been raised so that the end of the punch contacts the end of the selector bar for placing stress upon the slide bar and causing the piercing end of the punch to project into the sheet space 101 in the punch frame for piercing the paper, the punching stress being placed upon the selector bar and the slide bar. Approach movement between the punch .frame and the selector frame will, however, have moved the ilange 153 into obstructing relation with all of the slide bars, so that none of the slide ba rs can move endwise to release any of the selector bars, insuring that the punchings take place according to the selections by the keys. The stops move into coacting relations prior to the exertion of force in punching, so that by the time the punching takes place the stops will have been in coacting relation to prevent disarrangernent of the selected parts.
A full-clearing device is provided, exemplied as comprising a clearing bar 155, which is received against shoulders 156 on the slide bars formed by end rabbets 157 in one of the ends of the slide bars. This clearing bar has upwardly extending end arms 158, forming it a U-shaped structure. The upper ends of these arms are pivoted on shoulder screws 160 threaded into the selector frame. A clearing key 161 has a shank 162 extending therefrom, and is pinned by pins 163 to a bell crank lever 164, pivoted by a shoulder screw 165 to the selector frame. The shank 162 extends through a slot 66 in the cover 167. (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5.)
A link 168 pivoted to the bell crank lever by a shoulder screw 169, and is pivoted to one of the end arms oi' the clearing bar by a shoulder screw 170. The clearing bar is normally retracted by a spring 171, whose respective ends are attached to the clearing bar and to the ange 141, lugs 172 on the clearing bar striking the posts 22 for limiting retraction of ti e clearing bar.
Dopressing the clearing key 1.61 moves the clearing bar for shifting all of the slide bars endwise, and moving all of the shoulders of all of the slide bars away from all of the lugs of all of the selectors keys which may be in depressed positions, for causing all of the selector bars and their .keys to .rise into normal positions. The clearing bar is retracted to normal position as soon as the selector key is released.
The cover 167 is secured at three of its corners to the longer posts 22 by means of screws 173. The cover has depending walls 174, and is provided with a slot 175 at its front and one of its sides. registering with the space 101 for the reception of the sheet to be punched. The corner post 23 does not extend into the sheet space.
The cover is provided with an opening 181 for exposing the key-board 182. The keys are fixed to the outer ends of the selector bars. The keys correspond in number and value with the punches.
The punch frame and its connected parts are normally retracted by the weight of the parts.
When the proper keys have been depressed, the sheet to be punched is slipped through the slot 175 into the space 101, the rear edge of the sheet being brought into registry with the rear gage 102 and the side of the sheet being brought into registry with the side gage 103. The operating arm 68 is thereupon depressed, which, through the intervention oi' the levers 6l, 62, raises the punch frame, and all of the punches thereon which have no obstructing selector parts 108 in coactive relation therewith.
The punches which have obstructing selector parts 108 placed in obstructing relation therewith, are prevented from moving upwardly with the punch frame, the die-plate 45 forcing the sheet past the punching ends of the punches thus obstructed, for piercing the sheet and providing the same with holes corresponding in position and relation to the punches which have been thus obstructed by the selector parts complemental to the actuated keys.
The master die opening in the die-plate and the punching end of the master punch are preferably oblong for providing the sheet with a master hole or slot.
Upon retraction of the operating arm, the dieplate and punch frame are retracted for freeing the sheet from the punches.
My improved device is compact and durable, and the operating parts are so made and related as to resist great strains.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a punching machine, the combination of a base, a punch frame reciprocable on said base, normally retracted punches therein, a selector frame, normally retracted selector hars 'for said respective punches therein, keys for said selector bars, means for placing said selector bars in obstructing relations with said punches, shafts of cornered cross-section, journals releasably secured to said shafts, bearings in said base for said journals, levers having holes of cornered cross-section in which said respective shafts are located for causing said respective shafts and said levers thereon to rock together, pivot means connecting the proximate ends of said levers, pivot means connecting 'the outer ends of said levers and said punch frame for moving said punch frame, and operating means having connection with one of said shafts.
2. In a punching machine, the combination oi' a row of punches includingr minor punches and a major punch, a row of selector bars for said minor punches, said respective minor punches and selector bars being in endwise relation to each other, a channel shaped slide bar between said rows, means normally retracting said slide bar, said slide bar having side walls and a cross wall provided with holes in which said respective selector bars are located, the proximate ends of said selector bars and said minor punches received between said side walls and said side walls located in obstructing relation with said master punch, said selector tions slanting at one end and forming shoulders at their other end coacting with one of the walls of said respective holes for respectively shifting said slide bar endwise and being received in locking relation with plate, and means causing approach between said punch plate and selected one of said minor punches and selector bars and punching relation between a selected one of said selector bars and a selected one of said minor punches and between said side walls of said slide bar and said major punch for causing selected punching by said minor punches and definite punching by said major punch.
3. In a punching machine, the combination of bars having projecsaid slide bar, a punch l a punch i rame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector bars arranged in corresponding rows therein, channel shaped slide bars for said respective rows of selector bars, said respective slide bars having side walls and a cross wall provided with holes for said respective selector bars, said espective selector bars provided with projections whose lower ends are inclined and whose upper ends form shoulders coacting with the walls oi said holes for locking said selector bars in depressed positions for coacting with said respective punches, means normally retracting said slide bars, the end portions of said slide bars provided with slots, stationarily positioned depending hooks extending through said slots and under said cross walls for slidingly supporting said slide bars, and means normally retracting said slide bars.
Ll. In a punching machine, the combination of a punch frame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector bars arranged in corresponding rows therein, channel shaped slide bars for said respective rows oi' said selector bars, said slide bars having side walls and a cross wall provided with holes for said respective selector bars, said respective selector bars provided with locking means coacting with the walls of said holes for locking said respective selector bars in depressed positions for coaction with said respective punches, the respective end portions of said slide bars provided with slots, anges depending from said selector frame at the respective end portions of said slide bars, said last-named flanges provided with separated hooks which extend through said slots and have end portions extending lengthwise of said slide bars for supporting said slide bars and forming shoulders at the upper ends of said hooks for the upper faces of said slide bars for slidingly supporting said slide bars between said shoulders and said end portions of said hooks, and means normally retracting said slide bars.
5. In a punching machine, the combination of a punch frame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector bars arranged in corresponding rows therein, slide bars for said respective rows of selector bars, latching means between said respective selector bars and said slide bars for latching said respective selector bars in coactive relation with said respective punches, an end lock for said respective slide bars, and means whereby to cause approach between said punch frame and said selector frame for punching relation between them, said end lock mounted for positioning the same in locking relation with said slide bars during the approach between said frames.
6. In a punching machine, the combination of a punch frame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector bars arranged in corresponding rows therein, slide bars for said respective rows of selector bars, latching means between said respective selector bars and said slide bars causing momentary endwise movements of said slide bars, locking means for said slide bars normally out of range of said endwise movements, and means causing approach between said frames for punching action, said locking means mounted for being positioned during said approach into locking relation with said slide bars for locking said slide bars against such endwise movements during such punching action- '1. In a punching machine, the combination oi' a punch irame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector hars arranged in corresponding rows therein, slide bars for said respective rows oi selector bars, said respective slide bars provided with holes in which said respective selector oars are located, means normally retracting said slide bars, said selector bars provided with projections one oi whose ends are inclined and the other oi whose ends form shoulders coacting with the walls of said holes for respectively moving said slide bars endwise for release of other selector bars latched by said slide bars, and for latched relation of said depressed selector bar by retraction of said slide bar, an upwardly extending flange on said punch frame at one of the ends of said slide bars, said slide bars normally movable above said flange, and means for causing approach between said frames for punching action by said punches and simultaneous locking relation between said flange and said slide bars, thereby retaining said slide bars in latched relations with said selector bars during such punching action.
8. In a punching machine, the combination or a punch frame, punches therein, said punch frame comprising a pair of separated plates, aligned holes in said plates, the holes in one of said plates being of greater diameter than the holes in the other of said plates, said punches having portions oi larger diameter and stems of smaller diameter having a shoulder between them, eyelets about said stems having laterally extending flanges at one of their ends coacting with said shoulders and with said plate having said holes of greater diameter, spiral springs about said eyelets and said shanks between said last-named flanges and said plate having said holes of smaller diameter, the outer ends of said shanks formed with punching edges, said punch frame further comprising a punch plate rigid therewith and provided with punch holes in alignment with said rst-named holes, there being a sheet space between said plate having the holes of smaller diameter and said punch plate, selector means for said punches, and means causing approach between said punch frame and said selector means.
9. In a punching machine, the combination of a punch frame, punches arranged in rows therein, a selector frame, selector bars arranged in corresponding rows therein, channel shaped slide bars for said respective rows of selector bars, said slide bars respectively having depending side walls and an upper cross wall provided with holes for said respective selector bars, said respective selector bars provided with latching means coacting with the walls of said holes for locking said respective selector bars in depressed positions for coaction with said respective punches, means normally retracting said slide bars, one of the ends of said slide bars provided with aligned rabbets, a clearing bar extending crosswise of said slide bars located in said rabbets, a clearing key therefor for moving said slide bars in unlatching direction, and means normally retracting said clearing bar.
