The plates are provided'with registering holes 79, 80. l The-punches of the series ofpunches are guided in the registering holes '79; 80. The master punch isguided in registering holes 81, 82,- in said plates. The'punches are in the form of stems guided in said holes. They have cutting 11 edges at their lower ends which coact with the cutting edges of the punch-holesin the die-plate for cutting the sheet. The masterpunch is exemplified as cutting a slotand the series of punches, or junior punches, as cutting smaller holes.

Selector means are provided for selecting which of the punches in the series of punches are to be operated, and, in the present exemplification tripping or clearing mechanism is provided in each of the rows of selector parts, so that when one of the selector parts in any row is operated, the balance of the selector parts therein are released. The selector parts are arranged in rows complemental to the punches in the respective rows of punches. l a
The selector parts are exemplified as bars 101. These bars are arranged to be placed in coactive relations with the respective punches of the series of punches. They are shown mounted in a selector frame 102 provided with bearings 103 at three of its corners received about the upper ends of the posts 13 andfixed to said posts as by setscrews 104. The bars 101 are provided with projections 118 having shoulders 119 received under pins 120 on slide-bars 121, the projections having inclined edges 122 for moving the pins laterally, in order that they may be retracted above the shoulders 119 when the *bars 101 have been sufiiciently depressed. The slide bars 121 are reciprocable in bearings formed by the depending ends 123 of the bars 106, these depending ends being. provided with notches 124 forming lower lugs 125 on which the lower edges of the slide bars rest, the upperedges of the slide'bars being guided by the bodies of the bars 105, and the side faces of said slide bars being guided by the bottoms of the notches 124 and the edge ofrthe depending end 123 adjacent thereto. The structure forms slots in which the slide bars move. Eachof the slide bars is provided with a positioning pin 120 for each of the control bars 101 in the row of control bars affected thereby.
Each of the slide bars has its end bent to form a lug 131, in-which thereis a pin 132, which is received in a hole 133. in thedepending lug 123 of the bar 106. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a base, a selector frame thereabove in rigid relation-thereto, keys arranged in rows above said selector frame, a series of rows of selector parts supported by said selector frame and respectively actuated by said keys, a punch frame between said base and said selector frame, a series of punches therein arranged in rows complemental to saidselector parts, a die plate provided with, punch holes complemental' to said punches, said punch frame comprising a sheet receiving space between said punches and said die plate, means for normally retracting said respective punches, an operating rocker rod, a second rocker rods parallel therewith and spaced therefrom, said rocker rods journaled in said base,
arms fixed to said rocker rods projecting, toward ,eachpther and having an operating joint therebetween for operatively rockingly connecting said rocker rods, operated arms on the respective ends of each of said rocker rods, and operative connections between each'ofsaid last-named arms and said punch frame, whereby to cause relative movement between. saidselector frame and said punch frame for causing the reception of said punches complemental to key actuated ones of said selector parts through said sheet receiving space into complemental die holes in said die plate for piercing a sheet in said sheet-receiving space.
