This frame-work, in the present instance, comprises a base 1 supporting what may be designated as a basket frame 2, this latter comprising a lower supporting portion consisting of a pair of inwardly 'extending brackets 3 and t for carrying the punch supporting plate :3 and the plate 6 which guides the lower ends of the key levers hereinafter described, and a top or platform ,"7`having openings S, shownherein as circular', therethrough one for each of the-key levers Secured to the base is a pair of brackets 10 having sleeves 11 for the reception of the driving shaft 12. lilounted loosely on Athis driving shaft is a driving pulley 13, which is continuously rotated from any suitable source of power.
Supported below the punch carrying plate 5, and in the base of the frame-work, is a .die carrying support comprising a suitable frame 14 having a pair of flanges 15, one at each end, sliding in ways 16 located interiorly of the end of the base of the frame. For shifting this die platelll suitable means is provided, shown comprising a pair of L- shaped levers 17 pivoted to the ends of the die plate frame 11i by means of studs 18 passing through the ends of the base and which are provided with elongated slots 19 to` permit the proper rise and fall of the die-carrying frame. These l.-shapedvlevers are pivoted to the base, as at 20, exteriorly thereof and their upper ends are connected, through the medium of a pair of adjustable links, with eccentric straps 22 mounted on a pair of eccentrics 23 rigidly secured to the driving shaft. These links, as stated, are adjustable whereby the throw or sliding movement of the die carrying frame may be regulated.
A suitable connection is provided between the loosely mounted pulley and one of the iixedly mounted eccentrics, whereby at a predetermined period the constantly rotating pulley will shift the eccentric and so shift the die carrying frame. Tn 'the present instance this consists of a shiftable pin 2li carried by 'that eccentric which is adjacent to the loosely mounted constantly rotating pulley. This pin is shown extending through the eccentric, being carried thereby for rotary movement therewith, and is spring actuated to throwthe pin outwardly into position to be engagedby a projection or lug 25 carried on the inner face of the loosely mounted driving wheel. This connection between the driving wheel and the eccentric is controlled by a lever or key 26 pivoted to the side of the base and maintained in its normal position by means of a spring 27 connected to one end thereof and to the base. Connected with a projecting part, as 28, of this lever is a link 29, the opposite end of which is pivoted to a pin actuating device 30 in the form of a lever pivoted on the baseof the frame, this lever being outwardly bent or inclined whereby it formsa pin-engaging cam, it being in such position that it will engage the head 31 of the spring-actuated pin Cn' stud 211 carried by the eccentric and shift the same against the action of its spring and out of connection with the driving wheel. @n manually shifting this key or lever 2G the pin engaging lever will'- be shifted away from the head 31 of the pin 211 so that its spring willfforce the pin into position to be engaged .by the projection or lug 25 on the driving wheel. in operation, the rotation of the driving wheel will carry, through the medium of this connecting pin, the eccentric around one revolution, thereby to raise and lower the die carrying frame; the head 31 of the pin 2li, as the eccentric completes its revolution, being brought into position to be engaged by the lower inclined portionof the cam, lever 3() of the operating key 26, which, owing to .its outwardly bent formation or inclined position, will shift the pin on the further rotation of the eccentric to withdraw it from the projection -`25 of the driving wheel.
The punching mechanism inthe present instance comprises a series of punches a1'- range'd in twosets, one set comprising a series of punches 32 corresponding in number with the number of actuating keys or punch selecting devices t), the other set 33 comprising `the desired number for classifying rthe cards and which are not under the control of the keys. Cooperating with these two sets of punches is a die member B/-l having a series of openings 35 therethrough, correspending in number with the number of punches of both sets, this member being carried on the sliding die carrying frame 14; hereinbefore described for movement therewith and into position to permit the punches to pass into the openings in such member. These punches and the die member constitute the male and female dies forming the card perforating means for punching the required perforations in the card, which carried by the die member in the manner hereinafter described.
The punches are shown formed as headed pins having suitably formed punching ends and carried by the punch supporting plate 5, through the openings of which the punches extend, the heads resting upon such plate; This plate 5, with its punches, may be slid into and out of position as it is supported by grooves 36 formed in the brackets 8 and -i of the basket frame. Above this plate 5 is liXedly secured the key guiding plate G, which is likewise secured to the brackets 3 and ll. ` In al machine ofthis character it is necessary that all the cards of a series shall be lpunched in one or more places alike, that is vto say, if thepopulation and its character- `istics for a particular locality is being recorded, then all of the cards for that locality 'shouldbe classified insuch a manner that should any one or more of the cards get outof place it vcan be readily determined towhat locality it belongs; that is to say, if a certain perforation indicates the city of l/l/asliington7 then all of the cards whichv are used to record thev population and the characteristics of the inhabitantsof 1W ashington should all be perforated alike at the same point, so that should one of the cards be accidentally misplaced or lost it can be immediately determined to just what pacl age or bundle it should be returned. 'Heretofore, however, this has been done subsequent to the main punching of the cards, by means of an independent punching apparatus, a series of cards being usually punched at the same time. Consequently, should the operator drop la` card on the floor or otherwise misplace the same prior to its being punched to indicate to what class it belongs there has been no means of ascertaining to what locality the card 'belongs and to what class or series of cards it should be returned. rlo do away'with the above mentioned serious disadvantage l have provided means in the present improvement whereby, simultaneously with the punching of the various data by the punches 32 of the main set of punches, the card will also be punched to indicate the class to which itv belongs. This is accomplished in the present instance by that part of the die mechanismin which the punches form a part and which are not under the control of the keys, as hereinbefore stated. `rl`hese punches 33, formed like the punches 32, are in position with the heads thereof in juxtaposition to an overhanging part G0 of the bracket 4f. Unly certain of these punches, however, are placed in position. Yller instance, if a certain punch indicates the city of `Wash ington and the cards being worked upon are for that locality, then that punch only.of this gang of punches '33 will be inserted in the punch carrying' plate 5,- the remaining punches of the gang being-removed, this being permitted by withdrawing the punch carrying plate 5 on the brackets and l in the manner hereinbefore described and set-v ting the particular punches of the gang which it is desired shall punch each successive card of the series in the same place. When the plate 5 is returned with the desired punch or punches of the set 33 inposition, it will be seen that the overhanging part 6() of the bracket il will lock such punch or punches against upward movement in precisely the same manner as the key levers 9 lock, when such levers are depressed, the punches 32 in perforating, so that when the die plate and its card is carried upwardly those punches 83 which are carried by the plage will punch perforations `through the car essere rllhe die or die member 34 hereinbefore referred to comprises a pair of plates 6i and 62 having registering openings therethrough, corresponding in number with the number of punches in the machine. These plates are itXedly connected' for rigid attachment to the shiftable die carrying frame, but are spaced apart, as at 65, for the reception between them of the card and its carrier.
The card supporting means in the present instance comprises a forwardly extending shelf b3 secured to the front of the die member, it being provided in its bottom "with a pair of openings Get to permit the operator to insert her ngers to engage the card underneath thereof after the same has been perforated and quickly push or remove the same from its frame, and a card carrying frame 66 shiftable on said shelf into position between the die Aplates 6l and 6:2. This fra-me is spring controlled inthe present instance. The forward end of the frame,` which lis provided with a thumbpiece T2, is connected by means of a cord G7 ruiming over pulley T3 carried on the underside of the shelf, with a spring tensioned drum 68', likewise supported on the underside of the shelf, whereby `the frame is maintained in its forward position. When the card is laid on the frame and the same is pushed inwardly by means of thev thumbpiece to carry the card between the plates 61 and 62, suitable means is provided for locking the frame in such position thereby to always properly position the successiveA cards. This locking means comprises in the present instance a pair of pins 39 guided in the side -walls 74 of the shelf, the opposite and longer ends 75 of the pins being connected to a lever '70 pivoted intermediate its ends to the underside of the shelf, the end of one of said locking pins being connected with a spring T) also secured to the' underside of the shelf. Connected to one of the levers is an actuating lever 7l, likewise pivoted to the underside of the shelf and extending forwardly into position to be actuated by the operator. When the card carrying frame is pushed inward by its thumb-piece to properly position the card between the die plates 61 and 62, the spring 76 of the locking pins forces the locking ends of the pins into position behind the front wall of the card carrier, thereby automatically locking such carrier with its card in position to permit the proper perforation of the card. After the card has been perforated the manipulation of the lever 7l shifts the pins outwardly, thereby unlocking the card carrier and permitting the spring `actuated drum to draw the same to the front of the shelf, whereupon the card can be removed; rllhe sides of the card carrier or frame-during theisliding-'of the lcard into position, hold the ends of the locking pins outof their lockingposition until the front of-such frame has passed the pins,'where' upon, as` hereinbefore stated, these pins, throughthe medium `ofthe-ir springs, are"f forced back of the front wall Vof, such' cardcarrier, therebylocking it in the. manner just described. s
Freni the foregoing, it will be seen that when the card is placed in position o n lthe die, together with the card carrying lframe, will be shifted upwardby the die frame and the card `properly perforated and with-l drawn from the punches, the plate 62 preventing the card from remaining on the punches as the die and itsframe return t0 its normal position. After the' cardis properly perforated the manipulation of the lever 7l unlocks the card carrier, whereupon the .sa-me is carried forward automatically into position to be removed in thefmanner herein, before described. i
Heretofore it has not been practicable,
after the, cards have been perforated, to alsvcertain certain data untll the same has been separately compiled, so that it has notV been possible to ascertain certain statistlcs even after the. entire series of cards have been perforated without this` separate compilation. For instance, it has not been possible to ascertain the number of inhabitants 4of a certain city, eveny after all the cards indi-A cating the number of inhabitants and the characteristics thereof havebeen perforated,
until this data has been separately compiled, sometimes requiring many'mont-hs of time.
. In orderto do Aaway with this disadvantage and register or count upthis 'data .as each successive card is perforated, I have pro videdy an improved means for counting this data-as the successive cardsy are perforated, so that when all the-cards ofA a series have been'completely perforated it can be deterl mined at a glance just the number of'inhab-l itants in that locality, or in the country, and
.also the number of white inhabitants, the
number of males orl the number of females, which 1t may be desired to immediately ascertam when the serles of cards have been completely perforated, and this Without any separate compilation. In the present` embodiment I provlde a reg1ster1ng or countingmechanism for each particular item or fact,
as for instance, the number oftmales or the number of females, or the number of inhabitants in a certain locality which is desired to ascertain as the cards are perforated. It will, of course, be' understood that as many o .these registering mechanisms be provided as there are facts or items `tolbe compiled, but in practice it is usually fon-ly; desirable to ascertain in this manne-r the Vmain itemsas for instance the number of inhabitants' or the number of males or f femaIeS, the race', etc., of a; certainlocality.

The drawing 'of this ,bar 88 downward takes place as the die carrier. frame moves. upward, for asthis frame is shifted upwardly it shifts the sliding 'frame 924 also upwardly, thus drawing down the posts 89, which, through the medium of the parallel links 90 and 91, draw downward the bar 88, which, as just stated, will at this time engage the faces 94: of the link 85 and operate the counter. rllhe return of the diecarrier frame returns these operating parts to their normal position. Thus, it will be observed vthat the depression of the key, even though this particular key be attached to a counter, will not in itself operate such counter, the operation of such registering mechanism taking place only when the mainkcy 26 of the mechanism is operated, in other words, only when the card is punched by al1 of the punches which have been locked in their punching position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if one of the counters is attached in the manner set forth to that key, for instance, which indicates the number of males in a certain locality, it follows that each time this particular key is operated, once for instance for each card, and the card is perforated accordingly, the counter attached to this key will be operated, so that after a certain number, ten or fifteen thousand or more cards have been perforated the counter will show at a glance that asuiiicient number of cards have been perforated to indicate a population of ten or fifteen thousand male inhabitants. rlthus, without. any additional compilation or separate machines, certain data can be immediatelyascertained as soon as all the cards of a series have been perforated. rlhe registering mechanism also indicates the number of cards that have passed through the machine and it can bev determined at a glance, for instance, what the male population is as each successive card passes through the machine.
ln the old way of perforating cards, should one of the perforations'be misplaced the entire Card must be thrown away, even though all the other perforations therein were correctly placed. By means of the present improvement, however, as the card is not perforated until after all of the punches have been yproperly set, the operator thusf has an opportunity of observing before the perforation of the card takes pla'ce whether all the punches are properly set and should one or more-be improperly set she has an opportunity of correcting this before a card is wasted. 'llhus considerable time is saved as well as loss of cards prevented by this improved machine. Moreover, by the present improvement, a number of punches 'can beoperated at the same time, corresponding with the fingers of the hands of the operator. rlhe machines now most generally used inconnection with the census permit only one perforation to be made at a time; but by the present improvement the operator may depress a number of keys at one time, according to her ability to manipulate her fingers and thumbs, thus turning out work very much faster than has been the usual practice.
l claim as my invention:
l. ln a machine of the class specified, the combination of punching mechanism, key operated selecting and locking mechanism for parts of said punching mechanism, and power driven means for shifting the unlocked cooperating part only of said punching mechanism subsequent to the locking of the parts.
