To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID D. PACE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lauderdale county, State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Pokes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in means for preventing animals, such as cattle, from breaking through fences, and its object is to provide means for that purpose which may be readily attached to and detached from some supporting means connected with the head of a cow or other animal.

In the construction illustrated, my invention consists of a rod or bar having a swinging and pivoted connection with a support which is adapted to be attached to the horn of a cow. But it is to be understood that my invention in its broadest aspect comprehends a construction in which the bar is supported in any other manner upon the head of a cow.

I have illustrated a convenient embodiment of my invention, but, as already indicated, changes in the details of construction and in the manner of supporting the bar upon the head of ananimal (such as a cow) may be varied without departing from the scope of my invention as the same is described in the specification and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of the head portion of a cow showingmy improved poke supported upon one of the horns of the cow; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device separated from the horn of the cow; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.

Referring to the drawings :1 designates the head of a cow having horns 2 which eX- tend in the usual direction with relation to the head.

3 designates a clamp consisting of a strip of suitable material, such as metal, bent so as to form a sleeve portion 4 which, in the construction shown, is tubular. The crosssectional shape of the sleeve t may be changed, however, if desired. The sides 5 of the clamp 3 are adapted to be clamped together and the device thus fastened upon one of the horns of a cow by means of a screw 6 which has screw-threaded connection with only one of the sides of the clamp as is indicated in Fig. 3, the head of the screw resting against the other side. The outer ends of the sides 5 are provided with holes or perforations 7 in which a link 8 is supported by being hooked therein. The depending end of the link is provided with a loop, as shown, which is in engagement with a loop or bend 10 formed in the rod or bar 11. The depending end port-ion of the rod or bar 11 below the loop or bend 10 is of greater length than the upwardly extending portion thereof. For this reason and by reason of the fact that the link 8 is connected to the rod or bar 11 at a point a short distance to one side of the rod or bar 11, the latter is inclined in the direction indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The amount or deviation from a perpendicular direction may vary of course.

By the employment of a device of the construct-ion illustrated in my drawings, the rod or bar 11 not only has a pivotal move ment but it also has a swinging movement bodily back and forth with respect to its point of sup aort upon the head of a cow or other anima By reason of the inclination of the rod or bar in the manner indicated, the lower end of the said bar tends to move forward when the head of the cow or other animal is lowered so that grazing is not interfered with.

It is apparent that when my device is supported upon the head of an animal such animal is prevented from employing its head for the purpose of breaking through fences or other inclosures, whatever may be the character of their construction.

I am aware that elforts have heretofore been made to provide constructions for the accomplishment of the result accomplished by me, but I am not aware of any construc tion provided with a rod or bar having both a swinging and a pivoted motion; neither am I aware of a construction having the simplicity of construction of my invention; nor am I aware of any construction which may be as economically and as cheaply constructed as the device embodying my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A device for preventing an animal from breaking through inclosures such as fences, comprising means which is adapted to be connected to and supported upon the head of an animal, a rod having a bend or loop formed therein intermediate its ends,

and a link having pivotal and swinging connection with the said means and with the said bend or loop whereby the position of the said rod may vary automatically with respect to the head of the animal.

2. Means for preventing an animal from breaking through fences or other inclosures, consisting of a device which is adapted to be connected to and supported upon the head of a cow, a rod, and means for connecting the said rod to the said device, the said means comprising a bend or loop formed in the said rod or bar and projecting laterally therefrom.

3. Means for preventing an animal from breaking through a fence or other inclosure, comprising a device adapted to be connected to and supported upon the head of an animal, a link having swinging and pivotal connection with the said device, a rod having a ring-shaped bend or loop formed intermediate its ends and extending laterally from the length of the said rod or bar and the said link being pivotally connected to the said bend or loop.

4. Means for preventing cows from breaking through fences or other inclosures which means comprises a clamp adapted to be secured upon the horn of a cow, which clamp consists of a strip of suitable material bent 3 so as to form a sleeve, means for securing the said clamp upon the horn, a link having pivotal connection with the said clamp, a rod or bar sns ended in an inclined position from the said link, the said rod or bar 3 being provided with a ring-shaped bend or loop intermediate its ends, which bend or loop extends laterally from the said bar and is pivotally connected to the depending end of the said bend or loop. 4

5. A device for preventing an animal from breaking through inclosures such as fences, comprising means which is adapted to be connected to and supported upon the head of an animal, a rod having a lateral 4 projection from a point intermediate its ends, and a link having pivotal and swinging connection with the said means and with the said lateral projection whereby the po sition of the said rod may vary automati- 5 cally with respect to the head of the animal.
