ADJUSTABLE HANDLE FOR SAW-FRAMES, &o.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. LELAND, ot' Montague, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handles for Saw-Frames, Sac., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable handles adapted especially for use on the frames of hack saws, meat saws, etc.
A saw frame to which my improved handle is applicable is usually composed of a central portion or back, and arms extendingsubstantially at right angles with the back and having means for engaging the saw blade, the back and arms being made from a single flat-sided resilient metal bar.
My invention is embodied in a handle adapted to slide upon said bar and to be secured thereto at any desired point, the handle including a clamp portion which is movable upon and engageable with the saw frame, and an outer or grip portion which is adapted to be adjusted to stand at any desired angle relatively to the clamp portion and the part of the saw frame on which the clamp portion is located.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a hack saw provided with a handle embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 represents a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a different adjustment of the handle; Figs. 5 and 6 represent perspective views of the members of the clamp separated from each other.
Similar reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents a part of a hack saw frame, and 13 represents a part of the blade thereof, the frame and blade being of any suitable construction and detachably connected by any suitable means. The construction of the saw forms no part of my present invention, which is applicable to any metallic saw frame which has an arm or bar with substantially parallel edges.

strip of metal bent into a U shape and having a clamping face 15 formed by the inner surface of the neck connecting the two arms of the member, said face being adapted to engage the inner edge of the frame 12. The arms of the member 11 are provided with orifices 16 to receive a pivot pin or bolt 17.
18 represents a complemental clamp inember which is formed as a block of approximately circular form, flat on one side to provide a clamping face 19 which is opposed to the clamping face 15 and is adapted to bear on the outer edge of the frame l2. The block 18 is provided with an orifice 20 through which the pin 17 passes, said orifice being sufficiently larger than the diameter of the pin to permit the block 18 to have a limited independent edgewise movement on the pin, so that its clamping face 19 may be moved toward and from the clamping face l5.
The body of the handle includes a forked inner portion 21, the arms or ears 22 of which are spaced apart sufficiently to receive between them the arms of the clamp member 14, said ears being provided with orifices which receive the pin 17. One of said orifices may be screw-threaded to engage the threaded end portion 17a of the pin. The body of the handle also includes a grip portion 23 from the inner end of which projects a screw-threaded stem 24 engaged with a longitudinal screw-threaded orifice 25 in the inner portion 22, said vstem being rigidly secured to the grip portion 23 by a pin 26 or otherwise. The inner end of the stem 25 is arranged to bear on the outer edge of the block 18. lVhen the stem is turned inwardly it presses the clamping face of the block 18 against the outer edge of the frame l2 and at the same time eX- erts pressure on the clamp member 14; through the inner portion 21 and pin 17 in the direction required to press the face 15 of said member against the edge of the frame 12. The clamp members are thus caused to exert a tight frictional grip on the frame and the body of the handle is securely engaged with the clamp and held at any position to which it may be turned on the pin 17.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the handle may be adjusted by sliding it upon the frame and then secured firmly to the frame with the body portion of the handle at any desired angle relatively to the frame, all as indicated by full and dotted lines, Fig. l, the variability yof the angle of the handle body being further illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4.
I claim l. A handle comprising a clamp formed to slide upon a part of a saw frame and composed of members having opposed faces adapted to bear on opposite edges ofthe frame, said members being adjustable relatively to each other to engage and release the frame, and a body portion pivotally connected with the clamp and adapted to stand at different angles relatively to the latter, said body portion being provided with means for simultaneously adjusting the clamp members and securing the body portion to the clamp at the desired angle.
2. A handle comprising an inner portion composed of a U shaped clamping member adapted to slide upon a part of a saw frame, and having a clamping face adapted to engage one edge of said frame, a complemental clamping member formed as a block fitted between the arms ofsaid member and having a clamping face adapted to engage the opposite edge of the frame, said members having coinciding orifices, a pivot pin inserted in said orifices, the orifice in the block being larger than the pin to permit a limited independent movement of the block, and a body portion .composed of a forked inner member the arms of which are spaced to receive between them the ends ofthe arms of the U-shaped clamping member, and are provided with orifices receiving the said pivot pin, said inner member havinga longitudinal screw-threaded orifice, and a grip member having a screw-threaded stem engaged with said threaded orifice and adapted to bear on the outer edge of said block.
