APPLIOATION FILED 21:13.7, 1911. v

WITNESSES ATTORNEYS GEORGE H. PRIER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.
Application filed February 7, 1911. Serial No. 607,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon H. PRIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Richmond, borough of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Level, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and im proved level of a type adapted to be suspended on a line, to adjust the same to a perfect level, as is sometimes desired in a bricklayers or stone-masons line.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and both accurate and positive in its use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a plurality of hangers for suspending the level from a line, these hangers being adjustable so as to permit initial adjustment of the level, so that it will be exactly true. v
These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates a casing, which is preferably of cylindrical tubular form and provided with an opening 2 in the top side thereof, to which a bulb 3 having the proper .curvature and almost filled with a proper liquid, can be seen, so that the bubble therein may determine when the instrument is adjusted to an exact level.
concentrically mounted in the casing 1, and extending a short distance in each end thereof, there are provided plugs 5 and 6, each comprising a hardwood filling 7 and a metal cap 8. These caps 8 have apertures 9 therein, through which may extend suitable hangers 10. These hangers are shown in the form of hooks, open at one side so as to be able to engage over a line 11, and are provided at their lower ends with screwthreaded points 12, so that they can be adjustably mounted in sockets in the plugs. The caps 8 are provided with annular beading 13, which limits the inward motion of the plugs relatively to the casing.
The utility of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. The hangers 10 are inserted over a line, such as a masons line used in laying stone or brick, and the latter adjusted until the bulb 3 indicates that the proper level has been obtained. If the level is not in true, or it is desired to have the level arranged at a predetermined angle, it can be readily adjusted by adjusting one or both of the hangers 10 by screwing them into or out of the plugs 5 and 6.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and ellieient device, which can be inexpensively manufactured and which will readily accomplish the purpose desired, in the shortest possible space of time.
lVhile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a casing, of a level bulb mounted in said casing and exposed to view, plugs mounted in said casing, and hook hangers having screw-threaded engagement with said plugs so as to vary the relative position of said hangers with respect to said bulb, and adapted to hang on a lineal support.
2. The combination with a tubular casing having an opening therein, of a bulb disposed in juxtaposition to said opening, a plug mounted in each end of said casing, and a screw-threaded hook hanger adjustably mounted in each of said plugs and adapted to engage over a line to form a means of suspension.
3. The combination with a tubular casing having an opening therein, of a bulb disposed in register with said opening, a plug located in each end of said casing, said plugs, each comprising a hardwood filling and a metal cap having an opening therein and a hook hanger open at the side so as to engage a lineal supporting means, and having a screw-threaded point adapted to pass through said opening in each of said caps name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscriblng Witnesses.
GEORGE H. PRIER.
and engaging in the socket in said filling so Vitnesses: as to form an ad ustabIe suspenslon means. H. VVI-IITING,
In testimony whereof I have signed my J. P. DAVIS.
