Description

H. A. BOCKER.
UMBRELLA HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 13, 19m.
Patented July 3, 1917.
UNTTED STATES PATENT HERIVIENIA A. BDCKER, OF BUFFALO, NEVT YORK.
UMBRELLA-HOLDER.
Application filed March 13, 1914.
To all who; it may concern.
Be it known that I, HERMENIA A. BOOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to umbrella holders, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a holder in which umbrellas may be held the right side up to permit the water to drip oif the cover toward the handle end of the umbrella, thus preventing the water from gathering near the tip of the umbrella inside to rust away the connecting wires and thus render the umbrella useless.
In order to properly dry out an umbrella after it has been used it should be set up with the handle end downward in order that the water may drip olf the cover and prevent an accumulation of water within the umbrella near the tip for rusting out the wires.
Another object of this invention is to provide an umbrella holder in which the clasp for engaging the tip end of the umbrella is adjustable vertically to accommodate um brellas of different lengths.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section of an umbrella holder made in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the drip pan,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the vertically adjustable member carrying the clasp for holding the tip of the umbrella.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the handle support and drip pan, mounted on suitable legs 2. As shown, the handle support 1 is inclined from the center outwardly, and near the outer edge a groove or gutter 3 extends entirely around the member 1 so that the water running oil the umbrellas will run into this gutter to be removed when required.
Secured centrally to the member 1 is a standard 4, provided with a central bore 5 at its upper end, and adjustably mounted Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 11.9157.
Serial No. 824,407.
Connected to the upper end of the rod 6 by means of a pin or screw 8 is a ring or collar 9, to which the downturned ends 10 of the radial rods 11 are attached. Supported upon the outer ends of the rods 11 is a ring 12, and connected to said ring at suitable intervals are clasps, each formed of wire bent upon itself to form a coil 13 for surrounding the ring 12 and outwardly extending spring clasp members 1-1, having outwardly extending curved ends 15.
Secured to the handle supporting element 1 at a short distance from the drip pan or gutter 3 and in alinement with the clasp for holding the tips of the umbrellas are handle supporting devices 16, which have horizontal disposed upper sides and which are designed for the purpose of holding the handle 17 of the umbrella raised above the upper surface of the member 1 to permit the water to run off into the gutter without wetting the handle. The horizontal upper sides of the handle supporting devices 16 are adapted to support umbrellas in a vertical position, rendering it impossible for the umbrellas to accidentally fall out of the holder. The tips 18 of the umbrellas are engaged between the resilient members 1 1 of the clasps thus holding the umbrellas 19 so that the water will run off the cover and run down into the gutter 3.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that an umbrella holder made in acordance with this invention can be produced at slight cost, will hold the umbrellas proper side up to permit the water to drip off without gathering at the point inside where the cover is attached to the umbrella stick and thus rust out the wires and connections to destroy the umbrella, and that the rod 6 may be adjusted for umbrellas of different lengths by turning the thumb screw 7 Various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is In an umbrella holder, a circular base plate having a smooth unbroken upper surface, a standard rigidly secured to the central portion of said base plate, said base plate being inclined downwardly from said standard outwardly in all directions toward the periphery thereof, a gutter surrounding said base plate and formed integral therewith, the outer edges of the gutter extending upwardly to a point above said base plate, a plurality of spaced circuin'ferentially disposed blocks secured to the upper surface of said base plate and positioned relatively near the gutter, an adjustable rod carried by said standard, means carried by said rod and positioned in direct vertical alinement with the blocks to engage the tip ends of umbrellas, said blocks being adapted to engage the handles of the umbrellas, whereby the handles of the umbrellas are supported above the surface of the base plate and gutter.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
