SAW-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911 Application tiled February 16, 1911. Sen'al No. 608,910.
To all whom 'it may concern:
3e it known that 1. Jesse lhxmx. a
citizen of the United States. residing :-t-
Hy invention relates to improvements in saw-handles and is pm'ticularlv (ln-igllctl for use with cross-cut saws.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a cross-eut saw handle which onlbodies tlCYlcQS for bracing and holding tl 2 saw handle and blade. and also a guard for a portiiiii of the saw and its teeth. ll means of the particular form of braces I am also enabled to raise or lower the handle with relation to the saw.
The, invention consists essentially. in the combination and arrangement of parts, and novel features thereof, as fully setforth in the following specification, illustrated in the drawings, and more particularly described in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one example of the physical embodiment; of my lllVClltl'Jll' constructed according to the best. mode I have so far dcvised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and whi e I have shown an exemplifying structure embodying a erosscut saw, it will of course be understood that the device may be used n connection with other types of saw if desired.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a saw, with the novel features ofany invention applied thereto, parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the b ace, and showing the guard in section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the saw guard,
. detached.
In the drawiugsthe numeral 1 designates a cross cut saw ot'u sual type provided with spaced teeth 2, and with the squared end 3. The end 3 of the saw is held in the slot 4 of the hollow spool 5, and the spool 5 is held to the handle 6 by means of the threaded bar or shank 7 which extends through the orifice 8 in the handle, is threaded at 9, and provided wit. the nut 10, which seats against the washer 11, between said nut an the handle bar. The 513001 is provided witi enlarged heads 12 and 13, the former engaging and conforming to the shapeof the handle bar, flDdt latter provided with the kerf'or vex-tap; slot 4.-
l e s 5 l 1 l a l l i l I As clearly seen in the drawing, the brace for the saw composed of two diverging arms, the lowe" arm l-l being an extension of the shank T, and. slotted at 15 and the upper arm 16 being hinged or pivoted at 1? to the v hank. and formed with a slot 18. These slotted arms are adapted to straddle or span. the upper edge of the saw, and the end teeth. I
The outer or free end of the arm 16 is anchored in one ot a xuliCS of inclined slots 19 extending from the upper edge of the saw blade. The free end of the lower arm 14 is formed with a neck 20 and head 21 upon which is suspended the outer arm 2'2 of the yoke 23. i
The arm 22 of'the yoke 23 is formed with an opening comprising the enlarged portion 2-1 :nla -d to pass over the head 11 of the arm 14. and a restricted opening 25 adapted to seatnpon the neck 20 of said arm 14.
The opposite end of the yoke is provided with a second upright arm 26, slot-ted at 27 to fit over the cdgeior end 3 of the saw blade. 7
In assembling the saw handle and saw, the upper and lower brace arms of the shank, with tlie'yoke guard thereon, are anchored to the saw blade in'their respective manners, with the end 3 of the blade projecting through the slot 27 of arm 26. The shank is then passed through the hollow spool and the end of the saw blade seated in the slot 4 of the spool. The handle bar is then passed over the end of the shank, and the nut screwed home against the washer 11. By means of the nut- 10 all the parts are drawn compactly together and by means of the brace arms a rigid connection of the parts is accomplished. It 'will be understood that the yoke guard is somewhat elastic, and because of this dact, in addition to forming a guard, it. also performs the function 0 a brace arm, as it is held tightly between the head of the spool, and the head of the lower bracearm and a saw tooth.
. To raise or lower the saw with relation to the handle, or vice versa, the upper brace arm may be engaged in a different notch or slot in the saw, as will be understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, it will be apparent that I have provided a saw handle which fulfils the purposes set forth as the objectof ray-invention.
Claims. 1. The combination with a saw blade and i i v i i l .I
handle bar, of a spool held therebetween, :1 shank passed through said spool and bar, a brace arm extending from said shank and engaging the teeth of the saw, and a second 5 brace arm hinged to the shank and its outer or free end anchored to the top edge of the saw blade.
2. The combination. with a saw blade and 'handle bar, of a spool, a shank passed through said spool and bar, a clamping nut on the threaded end of the shank, and diverging arms extending from saidshank, slotted to pass over the top edge of the saw and teeth respectively, and means for anehoring the ends of said arms.
3. The combination with a saw blade and handle bar, of a spool slotted to receive the end of the blade, ashank passed throu h i said spool and bar, a nut threaded upon t 1e end of the shank, a lower extension on the its free end attached to one of said brace arms.
In testimony whereof I-affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
