Description
(No Model.) v r J. R. GILBERT. BROOM HEAD.
' 110. 521,161. Patented June 12, 1894.
Igwhgfr UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. GILBERT, OF KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA.
BROOM-HEAD.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,161, dated June 12, 1894.
Application filed September 26, 1893. $erial No. 486,550. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. GILBERT, a
of Florida, have invented a new and useful Broom-Head, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin broom heads and is designed especially for using palmetto in lieu of the ordinary broomcorn, but may be used effectively with other materials.
The object of my invention is to provide a clamp or holder to which the broom-corn,
palmetto, or'equivalent fiber may be readily and quickly attached; and to provide means.
whereby said fiber may be readily replaced when worn.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 7
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom-head embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical, transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the clamp.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The body portion of the clamp which comprises the yoke 1, the slightly divergent sides 2, the offset connecting bar 3 and the tang 4 is formed of a single piece of wire, of which the ends 5 lie parallel with and contiguous to each other to form the said tang. The sides of the clamp are connected by the parallel transverse upper and lower bars 6 and 7, which, in practice are prevented from slipping downward by the divergence of the sides. Said bars are provided with terminal eyes 8 to engage the sides. The connectingbar 3 is offset laterally from the plane of the yoke and sides to form a pocket for the reception of the fiber, a clamping bar 9 being provided to close the open side of said pocket to hold the fiber from displacement. This clamping bar is provided with terminal hooks 10 to engage the sides of the clamp at their lower extremities. v
11 represents the fiber which is doubled upon itself, at the center of its length, to
form loops which are engaged with the upper transverse bar 6. The arms of each loop are then crossed and passed upon opposite sides of the lower transverse bar, below which the arms of the loops are engaged between the offset connecting-bar and the removable clamping-bar.
The above described arrangement of parts secures the fiber without auxiliary fastening devices, and when the fiber becomes worn and useless it may be replaced with facility after removing the clamping-bar.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. Abroom clamp havinga bodyportion provided with downwardly divergent sides connected at their lower extremities by an offset bar forming a pocket, spaced parallel transverse bars connecting said sides above the said connecting bar, and a removable clampingbar connecting the sides at their lower extremities to close the open side of said pocket, substantially as specified' 2. A broom clamp comprising a body portion having downwardly divergent sides and terminating at its lower end in a pocketprovided with a removable side, and transversely-disposed spaced bars provided with terminal eyes slidably mounted upon said divergent sides, and adapted to be tightened by drawing them downward substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a broom clamp provided with parallel spaced bars and a subjacent clamping pocket, of fiber, doubled at its center and engaging the upper transverse bar, and having its sides crossed between the said transverse bars, passed upon opposite sides of the lower transverse bar, "and extending downwardly through said pocket, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
J. R. GILBERT.
