' BURGLAR-ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9,1911.
' Application filed October 26, 1910. Serial No. 589,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS M. Pnn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved burglar alarm of that type designed to be mounted upon a door frame and to be operated through the opening of the door.
The primary aim of the invention is to provide a dev ce of this type extremely simple in its constrmJtion, readily set, and so compact as to be entirely out of the way when not in use.
A further feature of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it may be applied to a door frame in which the door opens to the right or to he left, the device embodying a trip finger which is of soft metal and may be bent to engageselectively with oppositely located shoulcrs which normally hold it and the hammer by which it is carried, in set position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device applied to a door frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View through the deview. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. i is a top plan view.
In the drawings, the device is illustrated as embodying a casing which is preferably of sheet metal and is open at its top and bottom, the side walls of the casing being indicated by the numeral 5 and one end Wall being indicated by the numeral 6. The op 0- site end of the casing is closed by a cartri. ge holdirg member 7 preferably in the nature of a block of metal projecting at its upper end above the plane of the upper ed es of the side walls 5 and formed in its said projecting end with a cartridge receiving opening 8 in which may be inserted an ordinary blank cartridge indicated by the referencecharacter B in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Throughthe side walls of the casing and through the said blocks 7 are formed open-' ings indicated by the numeral 5) and through these openings a securing screw 10 is to be passed for the purpose of attaching the device upon the door frame, the said door frame being indicated in Fig. 1 of the draw-' ings by the reference character D and the door which is mounted to swing 1n the frame being indicated by the reference character D.
At its lower end, the cartridge holding block 7 is recessed as at 11 and seating pivotally in this reces's is the lower end 12 of plished through the medium of a leaf spring 15 which is seated at one end in a notch 16 formed in the hammer l3 and at its other end is engaged beneath a lug 17 formed at the lower end of a slot 18 in the end wall 6 of the casing. The slot 18 is wider at its upper end than near its lower end or in other words, its edges converge downwardly so that as a result, shoulders 19 are formed in the edges of the slotnear its lower end. lt-igidly carried by the hammer 1.3 isa finger 20 which projects in the general direction of the end wall 6 of the casing and is of sufficient length to project beyond said end wall and, when the hammer is in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to project through the slot 18 and engage with one or the other of the shoulder. 19. The finger 20 is preferably formed of some soft metal such for example as soft iron and may consequently be bent to the form shown in full lines in Fig. et of the drawings or to the form shown in dotted lines in the said figure. In the first instance, it will engage with the right hand one of the shoulders 19 in Fig. 3 of the drawing and in the latter instance with the left hand one of the said shoulders. It will at this point be readily understood that the finger is to be bent to one form or the other depending upon whether the device is to be applied to a door frame in which the door opens to the right or to the left, it being understood that the door in swinging to open position, engages the extremity of the finger 20 and shiftsthis finger laterally to such degree as to disengage it from the shoulder 19 with which it is engaged when in set position.
From an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be observed that should the door D be swung to open position, the extremity of the finger '20 would be engaged 9315?. the Saki fingci" would then be disenfrom the shoulder 19 by which it is held in set position, and upcn being released would. swing upwardly together a dim immmci' 13 bywhich it is carried. Tnis movement of the hammer through the agency of the spring will. serve to bring 11% firing pin 14: forcibly ii'xro council with cap at ililfiflfllfilidgE if and the said "ridge will be explotierl. 5 will undci's'itocd of cmu'se that the device will be 50 applied upon the 6.001 frame that when e finger 20 is dis-011- -(i ifroiii the re Hing sbouidcr 3.3 it in gcsition out of the way of 11 ii :i'uriher swinging movement. -11, is claimed is: In a device of the class described, a x, a cartridge holding member at one t with the cartridge holding member "pcmting thBZfWiiii1 a piifng interbQwVGGIl the hammer and i opposite wail 015 the casing, the said 4 q u 111011901 am. will. 01? the casing @3 3 iahc casing, a hammer pivotaily con,
